She Forced Me Out Penniless—Then Discovered I'm a Billionaire

My brother-in-law racked up $50 million in online gambling debts and left my contact information with the creditors.

By the time the interest compounded to 0-000 million, a pack of thugs showed up at my front door demanding payment.

After I talked them into leaving, my wife and mother-in-law finally crept out of the bedroom, trembling.

Adeline Harding's face was chalk white. "Let's get a divorce. I'd rather leave this marriage with nothing than stay. Your debts are your problem. Don't even think about dragging me down with you."

No matter how many times I explained that her brother owed the money, she refused to believe me.

Peggy Chavez, my mother-in-law, slapped me across the face. "You're trying to frame my son just so you can trick my daughter into paying off your debts! Divorce. Now!"

"And since we're being honest," she added, "Adeline's pregnant. It's your good buddy's baby. So get that through your head and sign the papers."

Wait. I had a hundred million. I'd been about to ask if they needed help covering the debt. How did this turn into a divorce ambush?

Fine. If that's how it was going to be, they could deal with Tim Harding's mountain of debt on their own.

My voice came out dry and cracked. "You're... you're carrying Alex Swanson's child? Since when?"

Adeline turned her head and looked at me with open contempt. "Ronald Mason, so what if I am? What are you going to do about it?"

"Don't bother trying to make me stay. I don't want a deadbeat husband who racks up debts and doesn't have the guts to own up to them."

I stood frozen. Not a single word came out.

Peggy saw me standing there like a statue and kicked me. "Did you hear her? Tomorrow. County clerk's office. Divorce."

She turned to Adeline with a sly grin. "Good thing you took birth control every time before sleeping with this loser."

"Otherwise he'd use a kid to chain you down and make you help pay off his debts. I was planning to let him raise the baby, but now there's clearly no need."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "Every time... you took the pill beforehand?"

Three years of marriage, and Adeline had never gotten pregnant.

Peggy had mocked me in front of relatives and friends more than once, calling me a useless man who couldn't even father a child. She'd even pressured me into getting tested at the hospital.

The results came back perfectly normal. After that, the subject was quietly dropped.

She'd been taking birth control the entire time. She'd even planned to let me raise another man's child like a fool.

Adeline let out a cold scoff. "Maybe you should think about how your family treated me. That whole wedding settlement mess? I hated it from the start."

Peggy spat on the floor. "That pathetic bride price. Your family hemmed and hawed forever before coughing it up. So cheap it made me sick. I never wanted my daughter marrying you in the first place."

My mind flashed back to the wedding three years ago.

We'd agreed on a bride price of $999,000. A lucky number.

But on the day of the wedding, Peggy told Adeline to stay in the car and refused to let her step out unless we paid an extra million as a "door fee."

I thought it was outrageous, but Adeline sat in the wedding car dabbing at her tears, saying her mother only had one daughter and life hadn't been easy for her.

I gritted my teeth and paid.

When we arrived at the house, Peggy demanded another million as a "name-change fee" for calling my parents Mom and Dad.

I was done. This was highway robbery.

But my father stepped in. He said a wedding was a happy occasion, and we shouldn't let money ruin it. He paid.

Thank God my father saw through them. He'd kept our family's multi-billion-dollar fortune a secret.

He'd even held the ceremony at the old house from before the family made its money. In the end, they walked away with three million and finally stopped pushing.

Peggy didn't give Adeline a single cent as a dowry. Said our family "wasn't worth the effort."

I found out later that every dollar of that three million went straight to Tim Harding, who blew through it all.

My father had specifically reminded me back then to keep hiding the family's wealth. "Time reveals a person's true character," he'd said.

Now, it was clear just how right he was.

I took a deep breath, pulled out my phone, and called Tim Harding. "Fine, I'll agree to the divorce. But Tim's debts are not mine. I'm calling him right now to settle this."

I dialed again and again. Tim never picked up.

Adeline slapped the phone right out of my hand. It clattered to the floor. "You know damn well my brother's traveling overseas and can't answer his phone!" she shrieked. "That's the only reason you dare accuse him!"

Peggy kicked the phone across the room. "Your debt, your problem. Who else is going to pay it if not you?"

Right then, the front door slammed open with a bang.

Alex Swanson stormed in, face twisted with fury. "Ronald Mason, you're a piece of garbage! A hundred million dollars in debt!"

Adeline threw herself into his arms. "Alex, he even has the nerve to say my brother's the one who borrowed the money."

Alex kissed the top of her head. "Why don't you just come stay at my place? If those debt collectors show up again, what if they scare you and our baby?"

When he saw the shock on my face, Alex let out a mocking laugh. "What's so surprising? Where did you think Adeline went every time you were away on business?"

"She was at my place. She's slept in my bed more times than she's ever slept in yours."

After calling me garbage one more time, he took Adeline by the hand, and the three of them walked out of my home without a backward glance.

It wasn't just Adeline's betrayal that stunned me. It was Alex.

Alex and I had been brothers since college. A few years back, when he lost his job, he came to me for a loan. I didn't hesitate. I lent him a hundred thousand dollars on the spot.

When he still couldn't find work, I recommended him to a company. He worked his way up to a senior executive position, pulling in five million a year.

What I never told him was that the company belonged to my father.

I never imagined this ungrateful traitor had been sleeping with my wife.

I was still reeling from the memories when my phone buzzed with a call from one of my employees. "Mr. Mason, you need to get back to the office. Now."

I didn't know what was going on, but I rushed back.

The scene that greeted me was chaos. Adeline had brought Alex and Peggy to my company, and all three of them were causing a scene.

Adeline was at the legal department, filling out paperwork. "Effective immediately, I am no longer a shareholder of this pathetic company. I'm pulling out!"

Alex snatched up the withdrawal agreement. "That's right. Get the shares transferred and the divorce finalized. Then that hundred-million-dollar debt has nothing to do with us."

Peggy marched straight up to the clients waiting in the lobby. "The owner of this company is a crook!" she hollered. "Don't do business here! Leave while you still can!"

One by one, the clients stood up, gathered their things, and headed for the door.

That wasn't enough for Peggy. She stormed through the office floor, shouting at the employees. "Keep an eye on your valuables, people! Your scumbag boss owes a hundred million dollars! He could clean out everything worth a dime and disappear overnight. Don't count on ever seeing a paycheck again!"

When I walked in, my coworkers immediately tucked away their personal belongings, whispering to each other in hushed tones.

"So the boss is a hundred million in debt? He doesn't even take care of his own wife. You think he'd really skip town with the money?"

"I never would've guessed he was that kind of person. Now his wife and mother-in-law are here making a scene. Let's see how he handles this."

"Even his own buddy turned on him. That means it's gotta be true. We should all start looking for new jobs."

I rushed in. "What gives you the right to come in here spreading lies? I will sue every one of you for any losses this company suffers!"

Alex stepped in front of Adeline, chin raised, playing the righteous hero. "You owe a hundred million dollars. That's a fact!"

The gossip outside grew even louder. Every whisper was about me.

That was when my mother walked in. Her face was pure disbelief. "How is that possible? Ronald, didn't you just give me that jewelry from the auction the other day?"

I suddenly remembered. We'd planned to grab dinner together after work today.

Adeline let out a mocking laugh. "Auction? He bought those with loan shark money!"

"Enjoy it while it lasts. You'll be crying soon enough."

"And thank God the baby in my belly isn't yours. At least my child won't be dragged down with the rest of you."

"What?!" My mother's face went white with shock. She grabbed Adeline's arm before she could leave. "What did you just say?!"

Adeline wrenched free with a look of pure disgust. "Are you deaf? I said the baby isn't your family's!"

My mother already had high blood pressure. The shove sent her stumbling backward.

She clutched her chest and crumpled to the floor.

I rushed forward and caught her. "Mom! What's wrong?"

Adeline spat in contempt. "Old hag's faking it. Probably trying to guilt-trip us into giving her money. Let's go. She's bad luck."

She hurried out with Peggy and Alex in tow.

My mother's face was ashen. She couldn't get a single word out. Her eyes slowly rolled shut.

I didn't think. I scooped her up and ran for the hospital.

In the ER, the doctor examined her. "She has hypertension. The emotional distress caused a dangerous spike in her blood pressure. She needs to be admitted for observation."

I stepped out of the room and called my father, who was overseas on business.

"Hello? Ronald?" His voice came through the line.

I told him everything.

Silence on the other end. A few long seconds passed before he spoke. "I'm booking a flight home right now. They'll answer for this."

"Take care of your mother. I'll handle the rest." He paused. "Alex Swanson and the Hardings. I'll deal with them too."

After hanging up, I sat by my mother's hospital bed and pulled up the credit card I'd authorized under Adeline's name. I revoked her access.

That card was supposed to be for groceries and daily expenses. I'd told her the monthly limit was ten thousand dollars.

What she never knew was that the card's real credit line was a hundred million.

My phone buzzed. Several messages from Alex, all on WhatsApp.

First, a photo of him and Adeline together, posing intimately.

Then a string of voice messages: "Hey buddy, real sorry about your situation. You're in way too deep, and I can't help you. But I hear delivering food pays decent. Might help you chip away at that debt."

"Plus all that running around might help you build some stamina, if you know what I mean. Adeline says you're useless in bed. That's why she came to me."

I didn't get angry. I laughed. "I never treated you badly. This is how you repay me?"

Alex burst out laughing. "Man, I thought you were actually some rich kid. That's the only reason I ever hung around you!"

"If I'd known you were just some loser borrowing from loan sharks to play big shot, I wouldn't have given you the time of day."

I didn't bother responding. I blocked him.

The next morning, I went home to grab a few things before heading back to the hospital to be with my mother.

The moment I opened the front door, there they were. Adeline, Peggy, and Alex, standing in my living room like they owned the place.

Adeline stormed up and slapped me across the face. "You've got some nerve showing up here. We agreed to go to the county clerk's office today! How dare you not show!"

Peggy kicked me for good measure. "I knew it. He never planned to go through with the divorce. He wants us to pay off that hundred million for him!"

I shoved them both away, jaw clenched so tight my teeth ached. "My mother is in the hospital because of you people, and all you care about is the divorce?"

Adeline let out a scornful laugh. "It's your mother who's sick, not mine. Why should I care?"

Alex tossed a divorce agreement in front of me. "I already drafted it. Just sign."

Adeline found a pen and threw it at me. "I checked with a lawyer. As long as I leave the marriage with nothing and don't take a single dollar, I won't be liable for a cent of your debt."

"Hurry up and sign. Don't hold up my wedding to Alex."

I almost laughed. I reached over and signed.

She was walking away from the marriage with nothing just to dodge the debt. That meant the billions in my family's assets would never touch her hands.

The moment I set the pen down, Alex grabbed my arm and tried to drag me toward the door. "Come on, let's get to the county clerk's office and make it official. Nothing in the world is more urgent than this."

I shook him off. "My mother has surgery today. I don't have time for this."

Peggy kicked me in the shin. "Quit whining! Even if your mother dropped dead today, you'd sign these papers first!"

They dragged me out the door, hauling and shoving me the entire way to the county clerk's office.

The whole trip, Peggy ran her mouth at full volume, telling anyone within earshot that I owed a hundred million dollars.

People on the street stopped to stare.

"Apparently the guy took out a loan shark's money. His own wife's divorcing him."

"I heard he even tried to pin his debt on his brother-in-law. Wanted to weasel out of paying."

"What a lowlife. No wonder his wife and mother-in-law want him gone. I'd kick him to the curb too."

The clerk adjusted her glasses and asked, "Have the two of you finalized the terms of the divorce agreement?"

Adeline nodded and slid the document across the counter. "It's all settled. I'm leaving the marriage with nothing."

I had no objections. We completed the process without a word.

The moment we stepped outside, a smile finally broke across Adeline's face. "I'm free! I love you, Alex!"

"The second the cooling-off period ends, we're getting married!"

She threw herself into Alex's arms and kissed him right there in front of everyone. "Thank God I found you. A fresh start. Otherwise that worthless man would've ruined my entire life."

Peggy was even bolder. She shoved me hard in the chest. "Get lost. My daughter is carrying Alex's baby now."

"From here on out, she'll be living the high life. Never has to look at your pathetic face again."

I couldn't be bothered with them. I turned and walked away.

Alex gave Adeline's waist a squeeze, then pulled out his phone. "Grand Oceanic Hotel. I need a table for a celebration dinner tonight at seven."

"Your finest prix fixe. And two bottles of the '82 Lafite."

He raised his voice on purpose, making sure every word carried to my ears.

After he hung up, Alex grinned. "Hey, Ronald. We're throwing a little party tonight. Want to join us?"

I drew a slow breath, turned my head, and looked him dead in the eye. "Get lost."

Adeline giggled, clinging to Alex's arm. "Don't tease the fool, babe. He's a hundred million in the hole. He wouldn't dare show his face anywhere."

"Probably won't make it through the night. Some collector will catch up to him and leave him dead in the gutter."

Peggy spat on the ground. "Good riddance. That's karma."

Right then, a crowd surged up behind us.

At the front was a hulking, shaved-headed man named Bruno, trailed by seven or eight guys covered in tattoos.

Bruno peeled off his jacket and bellowed, "You owe money, you pay up. That's how the world works!"

Adeline and Alex flinched at the sudden roar.

Peggy spotted the collectors and whipped out the divorce agreement. "He's already divorced from my daughter. Kill him, gut him, do whatever you want. It's got nothing to do with us."

Bruno looked baffled. He jerked his chin at the men behind him, signaling them to bring someone forward. "Why don't you take a look for yourself and point out which ones are your people?"

Tim was dragged in, his face a mess of bruisespurple and swollenand he was screaming like a stuck pig. "Mom! Sis! Brother-in-law, save me!"

"I owe them a hundred million dollars! If I don't pay up today, they're taking me!"
