My Baby Was Taken the Day She Was Born

Im sorry, Miss Alessandra this is the third DNA test. Caleb isnt your biological son.

The doctors words echoed in the quiet room like a sudden strike of lightning. I just sat there, staring at nothing, as if the ground had slipped away under me. My grip tightened on my bag until my knuckles hurt.

No. That couldnt be right.

I was the one who carried Caleb for nine months. I felt every movement, every flutter inside me. I still remember his first crythe small, fragile sound that made me cry too. When they placed him in my arms, he was warm and perfect.

He was my child.

I tried to smile, though my throat felt raw. Doctor, thats impossible. Couldnt the samples have been mixed up?

He removed his glasses and spoke carefully. We ran the tests again. Everything was handled properly. Theres no mistake. The results confirm that Caleb does not match your DNA.

It felt like something heavy pressed against my chest. I could barely breathe. Thats not true, I whispered, shaking my head.

Still, a strange cold feeling had already started to spread inside me. I wouldnt have requested this test at all if not for what happened two weeks ago.

Our son was hit by a car while crossing the street. Thankfully, he survived, but he needed blood. The hospital said his type was A. Mineand Leonswere both O. That was when doubt first crept in.

Now, in that bright, sterile room, the truth felt unavoidable. The boy I raised for five years wasnt biologically mine.

My voice trembled. Then whose child is he?

The doctor looked uncomfortable. We cant determine that without further investigation. There may have been an error at the time of delivery.

A simple mistake. A harmless phrase for something that destroyed everything.

I thanked him and left, my mind numb. Outside, the evening air felt colder than usual. Real. Sharp.

I needed to speak with Leon. Maybe he knew something. Maybe there had been a mix-up he hadnt told me about. I wanted to believe that. I needed to believe that.

We had been together for almost a decade. Our marriage began as a union of convenience, but somewhere along the way, feelings grew. Leon could be strict and decisive in business, yet with me, he was always patient. When I felt alone, he stayed. When I cried, he held me close.

That was the man I trusted.

It was also our anniversary. I decided we would talk tonight and clear everything up.

But my hope didnt last long.

While I was getting ready, Leon called. His tone was calm, almost apologetic. Alessandra, something urgent came up at work. I cant make dinner tonight.

My heart sank. Its our anniversary.

I know. But this is important. You understand.

As always, I agreed. Alright. Be careful.

After the call, I tried to ignore the disappointment. Still, I couldnt stop thinking about the restaurant reservationthe meal he had planned for us. In the end, I decided to go by myself.

When I arrived, the staff directed me upstairs to the private rooms. That was when I noticed Vanessamy adopted sisterwalking toward the same area.

My stomach tightened. She rarely came to places like this. I decided to follow quietly.

The door wasnt fully closed, and I heard voices inside.

Is she really not coming? Vanessa asked softly.

Leons voice answered with a quiet laugh. She trusts me. I told her to stay home with Caleb while he recovers.

My heart began to race.

I pushed the door slightly open.

They were standing very close. Then he leaned down and kissed her.

The world seemed to tilt.

Vanessa smiled against him. I feel guilty sometimes. When will you tell her Im Calebs real mother? Im tired of pretending to be just the aunt.

Leon brushed her hair back gently. Soon. Wait until Alessandras inheritance is fully transferred. After that, she wont matter. Well have everythingand our son will inherit it all.

And if she discovers the truth? Vanessa asked quietly. About the babies being switched?

He gave a relaxed smile. She wont. She believes everything I say. Ill make sure of it. Besides, I owe you. You saved me after that cruise incident. I wont forget that.

They kissed again.

I felt as though my legs would give out. My daughtermy real childhad been taken from me. Sent away.

I stepped back before they could see me, tears blurring my vision. Each step away felt heavier than the last.

The next day, I went straight to the hospital and requested all records from five years ago. I wanted every detail reviewed.

After leaving, I made a call.

This is Alessandra Monteverde, I said, my voice steady and firm. I want to file for divorce immediately.

The drive felt longer than it should have. Streetlights passed in a dull streak outside the window while I sat quietly, holding the bag of pasta Caleb had been asking for all week. It was his favoritethe one he insisted on having ever since he left the hospital.

Even after everything I had discovered, I couldnt force myself to hate him.

Caleb wasnt my child by blood. That truth was painful, undeniable. But in every way that mattered, he was mine. I was there for his first cry, his first steps, his first words. I stayed awake through his fevers, cleaned his wounds, sang to him until he fell asleep. I loved him without hesitation.

Biology didnt raise a child. I did.

And the man I trusted most had taken that certainty away from me.

When the car stopped in front of our house, I stayed seated for a while, hands resting on the steering wheel. It hurt to think that all the years of love and sacrifice were given to a child who wasnt genetically minewhile my real daughter was somewhere else, alone and unknown.

My thoughts drifted back to the day I gave birth.

The first nurse smiled and said, Its a girl. Congratulations!

A few hours later, another nurse returned, saying there had been a mix-up and that my baby was actually a boy. I was exhausted, barely conscious. Leon reassured me everything was just a paperwork issue.

Dont stress, hed said softly. Our baby boy is here.

I believed him without question. Now that memory felt unsettling.

What had really happened? Where was my daughter?

I finally stepped out of the car and went inside. The house looked peacefulsoft lighting, quiet music, the usual scent of candles. But the calm felt wrong.

Then I heard voices down the hallway.

Calebs voicesmall, distressed.

I dont want Aunt Vanessa! Shes not my mom! I only have Mommy Alessandra!

My heart pounded as I rushed toward the sound.

Leon was crouched in front of him, speaking calmly but insistently. Caleb, shes your real mother. You just need to understand that. You can call her Mommy when Alessandra isnt around.

Tears streamed down Calebs face. Thats not true! I only have one mommy! He pushed Leon away and ran.

Caleb! I called as he tripped on the carpet. I caught him before he fell.

He wrapped his arms around me tightly. Tell them youre my mommy! Please!

My chest felt like it was breaking. When I looked up, Leon was staring at me. What are you doing? I demanded. Hes still recovering, and youre confusing him?

We were just talking, he replied, trying to sound reasonable.

Talking doesnt make a child cry like this.

Before he could answer, Vanessa stepped forward, arms folded, looking calm. Its not a big deal, Alessandra. We were only joking around.

Joking? I shot back. You think its funny for him to call you his mother?

She tilted her head with a faint smile. I could be his mother too. Were sisters. Why is that such a problem?

Something inside me snapped.

You are not his mother, I said firmly. Stop pretending. If you want a child, have your own. Stay away from mine.

Her expression changed instantly. Dont speak to me like that. Then, without warning, her hand struck my face.

The sound echoed in the room.

For a moment, I was stunned. Then I raised my hand and hit her back.

You forget yourself, I said, my voice shaking. Our family took you in. We gave you a home. And this is how you repay us?

Her eyes fillednot with remorse, but with anger. Youve always looked down on me, she said sharply. Everything you have was handed to you. I had to struggle for every bit of affection. I wont let you take this from me.

Before I could respond, Leons voice cut through the tension.

Stop it!

He stepped between us, furious. Alessandra, why would you hit her?

I should be asking you the same question.

Shes your sister, he said. Shes been trying to bond with Caleb.

She shouldnt be calling herself his mother!

I laughed, though it felt hollow. Youre the one encouraging it. Why are you so determined to make him see her that way? Is there something youre hiding?

His expression shifted brieflyjust a flickerbut he quickly masked it. Youre imagining things. Its just harmless.

Then, suddenly, his hand struck my cheek.

The impact burned. Caleb cried louder, gripping my clothes.

I stared at him in shock. He had never hurt me before. Not once. For a brief second, regret crossed his facebut it disappeared quickly.

I held Caleb close, wiping my tears. I trusted you, I said quietly. And this is what youve become.

He reached out, but I stepped back.

This is over, I said. Ill prepare the divorce papers tomorrow. Caleb and I are leaving.

Caleb had cried himself to sleep, completely exhausted. Even in rest, his small fingers were wrapped tightly around the fabric of my blouse, as if letting go would mean losing me.

I stayed by his bedside for a while, gently brushing his hair away from his face. Well be okay, I murmured softly. I promise.

The suitcase sat open near the door, already packed with our essentialsclothes, his favorite toys, the books he loved, the few belongings that still felt like home. I was finishing the last folded shirt when the bedroom door suddenly burst open.

Leon walked in, his expression tight with rage. Without warning, he grabbed the suitcase and threw it across the room.

Youre not going anywhere, he said sharply. And dont even think about divorcing me.

I steadied myself against the dresser, trying not to show how shaken I was. After everything, you expect me to stay?

He moved closer, eyes cold. And you expect me to just let you take my son?

A humorless smile touched my lips. Your son? You may share his DNA, but Im the one who raised him. Hes five. The court will understand that he belongs with his mother.

His mouth twisted. You really believe you can walk away from me? I wont allow it.

I folded my arms, forcing myself to stay calm. Ive already spoken to a lawyer.

For a brief second, anger flashed across his face. Then his tone shiftedsofter, almost pleading. It was the voice he used when he wanted control without raising suspicion.

Alessandra, dont do this to us, he said, stepping closer. Weve built a life together. His hand rested lightly on my arm. Im sorry. I was under pressure. Lets fix it.

I remained silent.

He lowered his voice further. Tell me what you want. A new car? Jewelry? Anything. Ill give it to you.

I dont need gifts, I replied quietly, turning away.

Then think about Caleb, he insisted. His birthday is soon. Do you really want to disrupt that? Dont tear our family apart.

He reached into his pocket and opened a velvet box, revealing a diamond necklacelarge and sparkling.

My breath caught.

Vanessa had worn the same necklace the night I saw them together.

Its beautiful, I said softly.

His shoulders relaxed. I knew youd like it. Lets forget this and start fresh tomorrow.

I gave a small nod, letting him believe he had won.

After he kissed my forehead and left, I exhaled slowly, realizing how tense Id been. My hands shook as I closed the suitcase again. For now, I would stay quiet. But this wasnt over.

A few minutes later, my phone rang. It was my former university professor.

Alessandra, she greeted warmly. The Amsterdam Art Museum reached out. They want you to curate their new exhibition. Its a major opportunity. Are you interested?

Amsterdam. The city where I once studied, where I had imagined building my future.

Yes, I answered immediately. Give me two weeks. Ill come.

After ending the call, the phone rang againthis time, my lawyer.

The divorce papers are finalized, he said. Leon cant stop the process anymore. And we tracked down the nurse from your delivery five years ago.

My heart pounded. What did she say?

She admitted the records were swapped. Your biological daughter was sent to an orphanage under the name Sofia. We have the location.

For a moment, everything felt unreal.

My daughter was alive.

Tears filled my eyes. Thank you, I whispered.

When I looked over at Caleb sleeping peacefully, my chest ached. I loved him deeply. That hadnt changed. But I couldnt allow Leon and Vanessa to control my life any longer. If they took my child once, I would not let them keep everything.

I would take Caleb with menot for revenge, but because it was the only way to protect us both.

The following day, preparations for Calebs birthday were underway. Decorations lined the house, tables were set with desserts, and guests were arriving. Yet something felt different.

When I asked about the arrangements, the planner hesitated. Mrs. Monteverde, there were some changes. Miss Vanessa adjusted the theme and catering.

My stomach tightened. Vanessa made changes?

Before I could respond further, Leon appeared beside me, smiling casually. Its fine. I asked her to help. Youve been stressed lately. Just enjoy the party.

Enjoy it? While she was taking over everything?

I forced a polite smile. Alright.

Later, moving through the crowd, I heard voices coming from the hallway.

Hes my child, Vanessa said firmly. Ill do anything for him. She doesnt belong here anymore.

Leon replied calmly, Soon, once everything is settled, shell be gone.

I kept walking, hiding my expression. They had no idea what was coming.

When it was time for presents, Vanessa went first. She handed Caleb a large gift box, glowing with pride. Inside was an expensive toy set.

Thank you, Auntie Vanessa! Caleb exclaimed happily.

Its Mommy Vanessa, she corrected gently.

My jaw tightened, but I stayed composed. Then it was my turn.

This ones from Mommy Alessandra, I said softly, giving him a smaller package.

He opened it eagerlythen suddenly screamed.

A live mouse darted out and ran across the table.

Caleb froze in terror, shaking. Mommy! he cried.

My heart dropped. Thats notCaleb, I didntthere must be a mistake!

Leon rushed over, furious. Are you serious? You know hes terrified of rodents!

I didnt put that in there!

Murmurs spread among the guests. Some laughed nervously, others looked at me with judgment.

Before I could comfort him, Caleb shoved me away, tears streaming down his face. I hate you! he cried, running straight into Vanessas arms.

I stayed outside Calebs bedroom for hours, hoping he would eventually calm down enough to hear me. His quiet sobs still slipped through the door, and every sound felt like a wound reopening.

I had wanted tonight to be perfect. I planned to make his birthday a beautiful memorysomething he could hold onto before I left. Instead, it became the night he started seeing me as the enemy.

I knocked gently. Caleb? Can I come in, baby?

Before I could even turn the handle, Leons voice came from behind mesharp and unforgiving. Dont.

I looked back. He was standing there, face tense, eyes burning with anger.

Leon, listen, I said quickly, trying to steady my voice. He got the wrong idea. That wasnt intentional. Someone must have

Stop making excuses! he interrupted, walking toward me. You humiliated him in front of everyone. His friends were laughing. You embarrassed our son and me. Do you realize that?

I didnt do it

He pushed me hard against the wall. The impact knocked the air out of my lungs, pain flaring through my shoulder.

For a moment, another memory flashed in my mindfive years ago, when I slipped on the stairs while pregnant. I remembered how Leon rushed to me, pale and shaking. He held my hand the entire time, refusing to let go. He hadnt slept for days afterward, staying by my side, feeding me, whispering that he couldnt lose me.

That man had loved me.

But the one standing in front of me now felt like a stranger. His hands were no longer gentle. His eyes carried only fury.

The realization hurt more than the bruise forming on my skin.

You dont get to see him tonight, he said coldly. You hurt him. You embarrassed him.

Im his mother, I answered.

You were, he replied with disgust. Honestly, I regret letting you raise him. It should have been Vanessa. Shes patient. She actually cares about him.

Something inside me finally broke.

My tears stopped.

If thats how you feel, I said firmly, then let her take my place. Make her the mother. Since youre already acting like shes your wife, why not complete the picture?

I turned to walk away, but Vanessa was already standing in the hallway, as if she had been waiting.

She looked calm, almost sympathetic. Sister, Im sorry about earlier. I just learned there was confusion with the presents. I should have checked

Save it, I cut her off. Im not interested in your performance.

Her expression wavered. I dont know what you mean.

You switched the gifts, I said sharply, stepping closer. You wanted him to reject me. Congratulations.

She didnt respond.

That silence confirmed everything.

Slowly, I removed my wedding ring and held it out.

Take him, I said evenly. Take Leon. Take this house. Im done.

Her eyes widened slightly before she smirked. So youre really walking away?

Yes. I met her gaze. And youll regret this.

She tilted her head. Or maybe you will.

I wont, I replied. Men like Leon dont love. They use people. Eventually, youll understand that.

Without waiting for a reply, I walked down the hallway.

When I reached the staircase, Mr. Lim stepped in front of me.

Mrs. Monteverde, he said awkwardly, avoiding my eyes, Mr. Leon has instructed that you are not permitted to leave tonight.

I frowned. Excuse me?

He said you must stay as punishment for what happened in front of the guests.

Punishment.

My stomach tightened. Are you serious? Move aside.

Two guards appeared behind him. Before I could react, one of them grabbed my arm.

Let go! I struggled as they pulled me down the corridor. Han, you cant do this!

I apologize, he said quietly. These are Mr. Leons orders.

They dragged me toward an unused room in the guest wing. I recognized the door immediately. It hadnt been opened in years.

My pulse quickened.

No, I whispered. Dont

The door opened.

The smell hit me firstdamp, stale, unpleasant.

Then I heard the sound.

Scratching.

Squeaking.

Dozens of mice scattered across the floor, moving in the shadows.

I screamed and tried to pull away. Let me out!

They forced me inside and shut the door behind me.

The lock clicked.

The sound echoed loudly in the dark.

I stumbled back, pressing myself against the wall as the animals moved closer. My breathing turned uneven.

This is supposed to scare me? I whispered through tears.

They wanted to break me.

But they wouldnt.

Not now.

Not when I had already lost so much.

Not when my daughter was still out there.

I sank to the floor, hugging myself tightly as the scratching continued around me. Tears fell silently, but inside, something stronger was forming.

They could take my marriage. My home. My reputation.

But they couldnt take my determination.

Tomorrow, I would be gone.

And when I leave, Leon and Vanessa will realize exactly what losing everything feels like.

The following morning, I finally walked out of that housethe place that had slowly turned into a prison. I didnt get far. A few streets away, my vision blurred and my body felt weak. My arms stung from the wounds, and when I stopped at a nearby clinic, the nurse immediately grew pale after seeing the marks.

Maam, this needs urgent care, she said firmly. Those are rat bites. Theres a serious risk of infectionor even rabies.

They admitted me to the hospital right away. I spent several days there recovering, alone. Leon never called. Not once. No message, no visit. It was clear where his attention washer.

Every time footsteps approached my room, I hoped it would be him. But it never was.

Instead, one afternoon, a nurse I hadnt seen in years walked in quietly. She closed the door carefully and looked anxious.

Miss Alessandra? she said softly, her eyes already wet. You may not remember me, but I was there when you delivered your baby five years ago.

My heart tightened. I remember you. Youve finally come.

She glanced toward the hallway before speaking again. Im sorry for what happened. I had no choice. They threatened my family if I didnt follow their instructions.

My hands turned cold. You mean the baby switch?

She nodded slightly. Yes.

I felt my knees weaken. My daughter

Shes alive, she whispered. I couldnt raise her myself, but I placed her in a safe orphanage. I made sure her file listed your name. Her name is Sofia. I told her that one day, her mother would return.

Tears streamed down my face before I could stop them. Sofia

The nurse handed me an envelope. Inside were documents and an address. Ive prayed for years that I could correct this. Please forgive me.

I held her hands tightly. Youve given me hope again. Thank you.

That night, sleep wouldnt come. For the first time in years, I felt something I thought I had lostpurpose. I promised myself that no one would take this chance from me.

The next morning, Leon called. His voice was sharp and demanding.

You will attend my mothers birthday tonight, he said. Dont embarrass me.

Part of me wanted to refuse. But his mother had always treated me kindly. She was the only one in that family who showed genuine warmth toward me. So I agreed.

By evening, I stood once more inside their grand hall, lights sparkling above and guests laughing around me. It felt artificial.

Caleb ran toward me hesitantly. When he reached me, he tugged at my sleeve.

Mommy Im sorry about what I said before, he murmured. I didnt mean it.

My voice softened. Its alright, sweetheart. I could never stay angry at you. Im sorry too. I love you.

For a moment, peace returned.

Then he proudly handed me a small glass of juice. I got this for you!

I smiled. Thank you, my love.

After a few sips, everything changed. The room began to sway. The floor felt uneven. My vision grew cloudy.

I managed to reach the bathroom before collapsing over the sink. My stomach turned violently.

Through the thin wall, I heard Vanessas voice.

Well done, she whispered. Now shell understand what happens when she makes you cry.

My heart shattered. I wanted to confront her, but my strength disappeared before I could stand.

The last thing I recalled was someone leaning closethen unfamiliar lips against mine. Shocked voices followed.

When I regained consciousness, chaos surrounded me.

Leons mother stood over me, her expression full of disappointment. I treated you like family. And this is how you repay us? With another man?

Leons face was rigid with anger. Youve embarrassed me for the last time. You wont be allowed near my son again.

I tried to explain that I had been drugged, but no one would listen. One by one, they left the room, shutting me out completely.

Later, I woke in a different hospital room. My fathers most trusted butler stood nearby.

He bowed respectfully. Miss Alessandra, everything is prepared. The documents are complete. The vehicle is waiting.

My throat felt dry. Is Caleb safe?

Yes, maam. Hes secure and will come with us. The flight departs this afternoon.

I nodded and rose slowly.

The ride to the airport was quiet. My thoughts were fixed on Sofia.

When we arrived, Caleb looked up at me uncertainly. Mommy, where are we going? Wheres Daddy and Aunt Vanessa?

I knelt and held his face gently. Were leaving, I said softly. Its just us now. Were starting somewhere new.

He hesitated, lowering his voice. Daddy said youre not nice. He said you dont love me. Are you going to be mad about the juice?

My eyes filled. I wiped his tears carefully. No. I would never hurt you. I forgive you. Well be happy togetherjust promise me you wont ever hurt me like that again.

I promise, he whispered, raising his pinky.

I smiled faintly and locked mine with his. Then its settled.

As we boarded the plane, he held my hand tightly. When the engines roared to life, the city slowly faded beneath the clouds.

I pulled him close and kissed his hair gently.

A new chapter was beginningjust me, my son, and soon, my daughter.

As for Leon and Vanessa, I made a silent vow: they would never have the chance to control my life again.

My hands wouldnt stop trembling as the car slowed to a halt in front of the small orphanage. It wasnt grandjust a simple building with peeling white paint and a creaking wooden gatebut to me, it was sacred. Somewhere inside those walls was my daughter.

Beside me, Caleb clutched his toy tightly, his big brown eyes glancing between me and the building. Mommy, he said softly, tugging at my sleeve, you said I have a little sister?

I smiled faintly, though my heart was pounding so hard I could barely breathe. Yes, sweetheart, I whispered, brushing his hair back. You do. And were finally going to see her.

He grinnedinnocently, curiously. Will she like me?

Of course she will, I said, even though I wasnt sure how anything would go. Youre her big brother now.

We walked through the gate, the faint creak echoing in the air, and a woman in her fifties came out to greet usthe same nurse who had helped me five years ago. Her eyes softened when she saw me, her hands trembling as she clasped mine.

Miss Alessandra, she whispered, her voice quivering. You came.

I nodded, tears stinging my eyes. I came for her.

She smiled, her eyes glassy with emotion. Then come in. Shes been waiting, though she doesnt know for who.

We entered a small room filled with childrens drawings taped to the walls. And thenI saw her.

A little girl, sitting quietly by the window, clutching a worn-out stuffed bunny. Her hair was soft and dark, just like mine when I was her age. And her eyes those eyes were the same shade of gray as Leons. My breath caught in my throat.

The nurse knelt beside the girl and said softly, Sofia, sweetheart, do you remember when I told you your mommy would come for you one day?

The girl nodded shyly, not looking up.

Well, the nurse smiled, tears already forming. Shes here now. Thats her, Sofia. Thats your mommy.

Sofias little head turned slowly, her gaze landing on me. For a long moment, she just staredher lips parted, her eyes searching my face as if she was trying to remember something she never knew.

And then she stood up, her bunny still in her hands, and whispered, Youre my mommy?

My knees gave way as I knelt in front of her, tears streaming down my face. Yes, I breathed. Yes, baby, Im your mommy.

She hesitated, then suddenly threw her arms around my neck, clinging to me so tightly I thought my heart would break.

I waited for you, she said in a muffled voice. I waited and waited

I hugged her tighter, sobbing. I know, sweetheart. Im so sorry. Mommys here now. Ill never let anyone take you away again. I promise.

Behind us, Caleb peeked from the doorway, wide-eyed and curious. Mommy, he whispered, shes small like me.

I turned, wiping my tears, and beckoned him over. Caleb, this is your sister, Sofia. Sofia, this is your big brother.

Sofia looked up, unsure. Caleb hesitatedthen smiled shyly and held out his hand. Hi, Sofia. Im Caleb. Mommy said we can be together now.

Sofia blinked, then nodded, her small hand taking his. The sight of them standing togethermy two childrenmade my chest swell with something warm and painful all at once.

We spent an hour at the orphanage, filling out documents and saying goodbye to the nurse who had kept Sofia safe all these years. Before leaving, the nurse whispered to me, Shes a bright girl, Miss Alessandra. Youll both heal now.

I squeezed her hand. Thank you. For everything.

When we boarded the plane to Amsterdam, both kids sat by the window, their eyes sparkling as they watched the world shrink below them.

Mommy, Sofia asked softly, is this our new home?

Yes, I said, smiling through my tears. This is where we start again.

Caleb leaned closer, his brows furrowed. What about Daddy? And Mommy Vanessa?

The mention of their names made something inside me twist. I forced a smile, my voice gentle but firm. Theyre not coming with us, sweetheart. They did bad things. Dont ever call her Mommy Vanessa again, okay? Im your only mommy.

Calebs lips trembled. Okay, Mommy, he whispered, resting his head on my shoulder.

Sofia snuggled into my other arm, her tiny fingers wrapped around mine. I looked at them bothtwo innocent souls caught in the mess of our pastand I vowed silently that I would protect them, no matter what it cost.

Hours later, when we finally arrived at our new home in Amsterdam, I felt an unfamiliar peace wash over me. It was a small house by the canal, with sunlight pouring through the windows and tulips blooming just outside.

The kids ran through the rooms, laughing, their voices echoing like music. I stood by the window, watching them, smiling for the first time in what felt like forever.

But then my phone buzzed. I picked it upand my heart tightened.

Leon.

25 missed calls. 10 unread messages.

Where are you, Alessandra?

Are you insane? You took my son?

If you dont come back, Ill make sure you regret it.

My fingers hovered over the screen for a secondthen I pulled out the SIM card, snapped it in half, and tossed it into the trash.

A small smirk tugged at my lips as I looked back out the window at my children.

Now they would know what it felt like.

The agony of losing a child. The punishment of betrayal.

And for the first time in five years, I finally whispered to myself

Theyll suffer the same pain I did and this time, I wont forgive.
