The Secretary Stole My Husband, So I Took Back My Empire

I bought a bubble tea. Accidentally paid with my husband's shared wallet. Before I'd even left the shop, two officers had me on the floor, face against tile, telling me I was under suspicion for embezzling corporate funds.

While I was still trying to process what was happening, my husband's new secretary called.

"Ms. Fox, I'm the one who called the police! Do you even realize that every cent you spend is CEO Henson's hard-earned money?!"

"CEO Henson works himself to the bone, and you're out here throwing his money around! Starting today, I'm in charge of all your spending. Every single purchase goes through me firstI approve it, or you don't spend it!"

"Also, your monthly allowance is five hundred dollars. You've already used four hundred ninety-nine today. You don't get to spend another cent this month!"

She was so serious, so pleased with herself. I laughed.

The girl had been at the company one month.

My husband was polite to her a few times, and she'd crowned herself his personal managerstepping in to run his life and mine.

But she had no idea.

The company was mine. Every dollar in my husband's bank accounts was mine. Even her salary came from me.

And her precious "Mr. Henson"?

He married into *my* family.

So who the hell was she to manage my money on his behalf?

The officers heard Belinda's words through the phone, then looked at my screen showing a shared-wallet charge of three dollars and fifty-two cents after coupons.

Their faces went dark.

They apologized profusely, promising they'd report the false police call back to my husband's company.

But I was doubled over against the counter, barely standing.

"It hurtsGod, it hurts so bad. I think the baby's coming please, someone get me to a hospital!"

Everyone scrambled to get me into a car and rushed me there.

They got me checked in, and right away they needed payment. I gritted my teeth through the pain and shoved every bank card from my wallet across the counter.

A few minutes later, the nurse came back with all of them.

"Ma'am, your cards have no balance."

My whole body went cold.

"That's impossible! Those cards had tens of millions between them at least. How can they be empty?"

Then Belinda's words hit me, and it clickedshe'd cleaned out every account.

I called my husband.

The phone rang a few times and connected.

"Honey, I"

But it was Belinda's impatient voice on the other end.

"Oh, Ms. Fox, give it a rest already. So your spending got cut offwhat, you couldn't wait five minutes before crying to him about it?"

"Don't bother. CEO Henson authorized this himself."

I swallowed down the pain and didn't waste time arguing with her.

"I'm at the hospital right now. I need money. Give me back what's mine."

"Or put my husband on the phone. Now."

Her voice came through dripping with superiority:

"CEO Henson is busy. He doesn't have time for your little problemshe handed all of this to me to deal with."

"You want money? Fine. Do what I told you. Submit a request through the internal approval portal. If I approve it, you'll get your funds."

"Oh, and your remaining allowance for the month is one dollar. Don't bother requesting more than that."

The pain tore through me. My face had gone white. I couldn't hold back anymore.

"I told youI'm in the hospital! I'm about to give birth! They need payment now!"

"These aren't Fergus Henson's cardsthey're mine! Transfer my money back right now, or I'm reporting you for theft!"

Silence on the other end. Then the line cut dead.

Belinda's text came through a second later:

"Ms. Fox, let's be honestevery cent you have is Mr. Henson's money."

"And you don't get to wave your wife title around to bully me."

"I've already frozen every account under your name and made sure nobody lends you a thing. When you're ready to apologizeand swear you'll stop spending Mr. Henson's money like it's yoursI'll think about unlocking them."

I read it, and my vision blurred, something hot and violent flooding up through my chest. Then I was gone.

But before the darkness took me, I got the call through to Attorney Pierce. I told him to fire Belinda Swanson effective immediately, suspend Fergus Henson from the CEO position, and have Fergus at this hospital within the hour.

A junior secretaryone month on the job. No one that low dares freeze the accounts of the CEO's wife unless someone above her is holding the door open.

But Fergus? My husbandthrowing away everything we had for a girl who'd barely learned the building's floor plan? I couldn't make it fit. I wouldn't.

And yet the thought wouldn't leave.

The Fox family was worth tens of billions, and this generation had produced exactly one heir: me. I could have married into another dynasty and split everything down the middle. Instead, I chose to bring a man into my familysomeone who'd marry into the Fox name and build what I told him to build.

To find someone honest and steady,

I hid who I was and slipped into Sterling Group as a low-level employee.

That was the year I met Fergus Henson, fresh out of school and just starting at the company.

Top university, empty pockets, but there was a quiet gentleness in him layered over something stubborn and unbreakable.

I noticed him right away.

He was always the first one in and the last one out.

While everyone else complained about overtime, he'd quietly re-check an entire floor's worth of reports on his own.

A few times I stayed late, and he'd appear at my desk with a cup of coffee, ears red to the tips, not quite meeting my eyes. Then he'd reach past me for the laptop, voice low and a little unsteady:

"It's too late for you to go home alone. I'll finish thisyou head out."

I could feel my pulse in my throat for a full minute after he walked away.

But the moment I truly fell for him came during an incident at work.

A female colleague stole my project, presented it first, then turned around and accused me of plagiarizing her.

The general manager backing her wanted me fired on the spot, threatened to hold me liable for leaking company secrets, and demanded compensation.

Fergus was days from a promotion. He slammed both hands on the table and stepped between me and the room.

"Mamie Fox didn't do this! I know herI'll stake everything on it!"

"You want to fire someone who's done nothing wrong? Then this company can't tell right from wrong, and I don't want any part of it. I'm walking out with her!"

He tore off his name badge and grabbed my hand, and we ranout of the conference room, down the corridor, all the way through the lobby doors.

Right then, something locked into place inside my chest. This was the man I was going to spend my life with.

I grabbed him, still breathless, heart hammering so hard I could barely get the words out:

"Fergus! I like you! Do you like me? Marry mesay yes!"

After the wedding, I stepped away from the company so I could focus on my health and have my heir as soon as possible.

I left Sterling Group in Fergus's hands, with Attorney Pierce overseeing things alongside him.

And Fergus didn't disappoint. The company thrived under his management.

Until a month and a half ago, when he suddenly told me he wanted to recruit a batch of underprivileged graduates from his alma mater.

I agreed.

Belinda Swanson was one of them.

Within ten days of joining the company, she'd been promoted all the way up to the CEO's personal secretary.

That was when the whispers started reaching me.

One of the girls in the secretarial pool pulled me asideBelinda had been carrying homemade lunches into Fergus's office, she said. The two of them would eat together behind a closed door and not come out for the entire afternoon.

Fergus's explanation for all of it went like this:

"Belinda works incredibly hard, and she's talented. I can't hold it against her just because she's young and fresh out of school, can I?"

"I only transferred her to be my secretary for work purposes. As for the lunch thing... she's just so dedicated that she keeps working through lunch to help me process documents, so she started bringing her meal to my office. That's all."

"There's nothing between us. But hey, if it bothers youif you're jealousjust say the word and I'll get rid of her tomorrow."

I wasn't the type to meddle with the company over gossip and gut feelings.

I pulled Belinda's file myself, sat in on a few meetings she ran. The girl was meticulous, capable, knew exactly when to press and when to ease off. I was impressed enough to pay off every cent of her student loans, push through a raise, and promote her all the way to chief secretary. I even warned the staff to knock off the rumor millstop making up stories about a young woman who was just trying to build a career.

I thought I was investing in someone with real potential.

Turns out I was just feeding the wolf inside her.

It started with the door code. She kept saying she needed constant access to pick up documents for Fergus, and before I knew it, she'd changed the code to our home to her own birthday.

When I confronted her, she apologized with tears brimming in her eyes, looking wounded and small.

That same night, she took a drunk Fergus and didn't come back. Her phone was off. Every call went to voicemail.

I searched for a full day and night. I was dialing the police when Fergus finally calledcasual, unhurriedto say he was already home. I nearly tripped over myself getting back, and there she was: standing in my kitchen, in my pajamas, flipping something on my stove for Fergus's breakfast.

She saw me and her eyes went red.

"I'm so sorry, Ms. Fox. I know I'm hopelessI just couldn't keep your door code straight. Mr. Henson was so drunk, and I couldn't get the door open, so I had no choice but to take him to a hotel for the night. But don't worry, nothing happened between us."

Anger surged through me and I opened my mouth to speak.

Fergus cut in first, his face turning to stone. He pointed at the front door.

"Six digits. You can't remember six digits. And you don't know how to turn on a phone. If the chief secretary job is too complicated for you, don't bother showing up tomorrow."

Belinda burst into tears on the spot.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Henson, I really didn't mean it! Please don't fire me! My mother's surgery costs two hundred thousand, and she's counting on my salary to cover it!"

"You fire me and my whole family goes under!"

Fergus looked at her, ice cold.

"Don't apologize to me. Apologize to my wife. She's pregnant, and you're the one putting her through this. If she doesn't forgive you today, you can cry yourself blind for all I careyou're still gone."

Belinda dropped to her knees in front of me and started slapping herself across the face, one cheek and then the other.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Fox. I was just afraid that knocking on the door in the middle of the night would wake you and hurt the baby."

"I'm clumsy with words, I have no sense for these things, and I messed up! Hit me! Yell at me! Just please don't fire me!"

I looked at her like that, and in the end I said nothing. I just told her to leave.

Fergus pulled me into his arms afterward, holding on like he'd never let go.

"Babe, how are you this kind? She made you upset and I was ready to fire her on the spot."

"But you said you'd forgive her, so I'll follow your lead. Don't worry thoughI'm going to bury her in work, keep her late every single night. Call it punishment."

Back then, I still melted into the warmth of it. Never once did I think to question whether any of it was real.

But Belinda never stopped. She kept crossing lines, kept pushing closer, each time a little bolder than the last.

She had access to my cards. My accounts. All of it, just like that.

And there was no way that happened without Fergus behind it.

No way.

When I woke up, Fergus still hadn't appeared.

But my attorney was waiting at my bedside, ready to brief me.

"CEO Henson has taken his secretary to an off-site meeting. He says he won't be back until tomorrow."

He studied my expression carefully before continuing:

"I checked the attendance logs from the past two weeks. The two of them have been leaving together for 'meetings' constantly... but the destinations"

He handed me a printout. Every single destination listed on those so-called business trips was nowhere near any of our partner companies. They were all resort towns. Vacation hotspots.

"I also spoke with some employees at the company. They said Belinda Swanson's Instagram is full of screenshots from these trips with CEO Henson... Would you like to see?"

He held out his phone. The screen was filled with screenshot after screenshot.

Every one was a carefully staged collage Belinda had posted.

The captions read things like:

"Thanks to CEO Henson for driving me home tonight! This is our special time for two."

"I complained about working overtime and a certain someone sent me a little 'bonus'... the Herms bag I've had my eye on forever!"

"I mentioned wanting to see the Eiffel Tower, and he flew me there that same night. If this isn't love, what is?"

The attorney went on:

"We looked into Belinda Swanson's college history and discovered she had a financial sponsor during her university years. That sponsor was Mr. Henson."

"Her college roommate told us Belinda used to brag about having a wealthy older benefactor. That person was Mr. Henson."

Hearing it confirmed with my own ears that Fergus had betrayed me long ago

It cut straight through me.

The attorney placed a folder in my hands and said quietly:

"There's also... we found this. I think you should see it."

I opened the folder. One glance, and my legs buckled. I barely caught myself from falling.

I gripped the folder, my voice shaking:

"Take me home first. I need... I need a moment."

But when I walked through the front door, strangers were moving through my home. Cases of jewelry were being carried out of the bedroommy bridal jewelry, the pieces my parents had spent twenty years collecting for me, every priceless heirloom, hauled out and shoved into a safe right in front of me.

I rushed over and grabbed the movers:

"What do you think you're doing? Put my things down!"

They shook my hands off without a flicker of expression, loading item after item into the safe. Then one of them turned to me and said:

"From now on, your jewelry, accessories, handbags, and gowns are all under Ms. Swanson's control. If you want to use any of them, you write a five-thousand-word request and submit it through the internal approval portal. Ms. Swanson approves it, you get your things. She doesn't, you don't."

I was shaking so hard I couldn't stop. I pulled out my phone and called Fergus.

Belinda answered. Her voice was bright, almost amused:

"Wow, one day and you're already well enough to come crawling to him? I knew ityou were faking the whole thing just to squeeze out more money!"

"And all that nonsense about going into labor soon. Your due date isn't until next week!"

"Oh, rightMamie! I almost forgot. Since your due date is next Wednesday, I'll only cover the medical expenses if you deliver on that exact day. Baby comes any other day? That's on your own dime."

I held everything in, every ounce of fury pressed down tight:

"Belinda Swanson! Who gave you permission to touch my jewelry? Tell your people to return my things right now, or I'm calling the police and reporting you for theft!"

Belinda scoffed, not a shred of concern in her voice.

"Your things? Ms. Fox, do you even remember who you are? You were a nobody clerk. You married CEO Hensonthat's the only reason you ever got to wear jewelry worth tens of millions or touch gowns worth millions."

"You're so obsessed with money you can't even buy milk tea without spending CEO Henson's cash. Who's to say you won't turn around and sell off the jewelry, the accessories, the luxury goods he gave you?"

"As CEO Henson's secretary, it's my duty to protect his assets. So from now on, unless I give you permission, don't even think about touching any of it."

"Belinda Swanson! You've gone too far!"

I was shaking with rage.

"Too far?"

She laughed, light and unbothered.

"Oh, that reminds me. I hear your mother is still staying at the hospital our CEO Henson invested in? Right? Honestlya broke little woman saddled with a bloodsucking wreck of a mother."

"She's been sick for how many years now? Who knows how much of CEO Henson's money she's wasted. So, to keep his money from being thrown away any further, I had someone escort your mother out."

The room tilted. My knees nearly buckled and I couldn't stop shaking, couldn't think past the roaring in my ears. I screamed into the phone.

"Belinda Swanson! Have you lost your mind?! My mother can't leave her oxygen chamber! What you've done is murder!"

I hung up and threw myself into the car, racing straight to the hospital.

That was when I found out: Belinda had taken my mother's VIP suite and given it to her own mother.

Some of the hospital's senior staff were people I'd promoted years agothey'd gotten my mother into a new room just in time, close enough to disaster that I couldn't breathe when I heard.

Looking at my mother's colorless face, I couldn't hold back anymore.

I turned to Attorney Pierce.

"Throw Belinda Swanson's mother out onto the street."

"Every dollar I ever spent paying off that woman's loans, every cent I covered for her mother's medical bills, I want it all back."

"And I'm pressing charges against Belinda Swanson. Attempted murder."

I tucked the blanket tighter around my mother's shoulders.

By the time I stood up, I was calm again.

"Take me to the company."

"Since the ingrates I fed with my own hands have shown their teeth, I'll rip them out myself."

The moment I walked into Sterling Group, the employees who recognized me stared with a mix of shock and barely concealed gossip.

"What's Ms. Fox doing here?"

"You think she found out about CEO Henson? Came here to make a scene?"

"She's a housewife. How's she going to fight CEO Henson? If you ask me, she'd be better off looking the other way. At least she'd still get to live like a rich man's wife."

I kept my eyes straight ahead. None of it reached me.

I was heading straight for Fergus's office when someone stepped in front of me.

A young woman I'd never seen before, looking me up and down with open contempt.

"This area isn't for people like you to just waltz into. Get out."

A nearby employee rushed over to explain.

"Chloe, that's Ms. Fox! Let her through"

But the girl called Chloe didn't flinch.

She gave me a slow once-over, then smirked.

"So you're the wife? This old? No wonder CEO Henson can't stand you anymore."

"This is a company, not somewhere for you to come make a scene. You'd better run home before CEO Henson gets hereunless you want him to dump you for real."

Murmurs rippled through the staff around us. Eyes landed on me, some pitying, some hungry for the show.

I let out a cold laugh, signaled my bodyguard to pin her, and slapped her across the face.

"Who do you think you are? You dare block my way?"

Chloe stared at me in disbelief, then let out a shriek like a pig being slaughtered:

"Who am I?! Do you even know who I am? You dare hit me! I'm Chief Secretary Swanson's best friend! You hit me! You think once she finds out, she'll just let you walk away from this?!"

She cackled wildly:

"You're just some washed-up old woman terrified Belinda's going to take your place as the lady of the house, so you came running over here! Let me tell you something! If Belinda wasn't so kindhearted, if she hadn't stopped Mr. Henson from kicking you out ages ago, you'd have been sent packing long before now!"

"You hit me! Just wait till she gets back! She'll have Mr. Henson divorce you on the spot! You'll walk out of that house with nothing!"

I smiled at that, then lightly patted her cheek with my hand.

"Then you'd better call them right now. Tell them to drag themselves over here."

"I came here today to divorce Fergus Henson. Only the one walking away with nothing won't be me. It'll be him."

I knew the second I stepped into the building, someone had tipped Fergus off.

I'd barely finished speaking when I heard footsteps.

Fergus came rushing back with Belinda in tow.

The moment he saw me, his face went rigid for a beat. He grabbed my hand and tried to drag me toward the exit.

"Not here. We'll talk about this at home."

I flung his hand off.

"Right here. Right now."

Belinda pulled the red-cheeked Chloe into her arms and suddenly burst into tears:

"Ms. Fox! I know you're angry because I restricted your spending, and that's why you came storming into the office like this! But you really were spending too much! The company barely clears tens of millions a year! You spent over ten million on a single necklace!"

"And you keep transferring money out of Mr. Henson's account to buy things! Fine, this time it was just a cup of milk tea! But what about next time?! If nobody stops you now, next thing you know you'll be draining tens of millions straight from the company accounts! Then what happens to all of us?!"

"I know you're angry at me. You can hit me, you can yell at me, I deserve it! But you shouldn't take it out on other employees! And you definitely shouldn't take it out on my sick mother! How could you have someone throw my mother out of the hospital? Do you know she nearly died?" The moment those words left her mouth, whatever sympathy the staff had for me curdled into contempt.

"God, she's that awful?"

Fergus's expression darkened:

"Mamie! Are you done making a scene?! Belinda restricted your spending for the sake of the company! If you have a problem, take it up with me! Why do you have to go after her?!"

"If you keep this up, I really can't stay in this marriage anymore."

I scoffed and flung the Instagram screenshots across the floor.

"Is it the company that's making this marriage unbearable for you, or is it because you want your precious secretary to take my place?"

"What the hell are you talking about?!"

Fergus roared, all bluster and no conviction:

"Don't you dare spread lies about her!"

I pulled a prenatal report from my bag and hurled it in his face.

"Belinda Swanson is pregnant. With your child. Still going to call me a liar?!"

"And you actually wrote her a guarantee promising that once she has this baby, you'd give the child five percent of the company's shares?!"

Fergus held the prenatal report. Not a flicker of guilt or embarrassment on his face.

He looked at me and let out a weary sigh:

"Since you already know, I won't hide it anymore."

"Belinda is carrying my child, yes. But I'm not going to divorce you. Once her baby is born, I'll bring the child home. You can raise it together with ours."

"If it bothers you, I'll set her and the kid up somewhere out of the way. You'll never have to see them."

"The shares are just so they have something to live on. The company still goes to our childrelax."

I was so furious I laughed.

"Fergus Henson, since when do you have any right to touch the company's shares?!"

"I don't agree to any of this!"

His expression darkened.

"Then we divorce. But don't forgetwe never signed a prenup. Take it to court if you want. The company, every asset, half of it's mine."

"You've been a housewife for years. You probably don't even realize the company's already mine. That sad little stake you're holding? It doesn't change a thing. Forget handing out sharesthe whole company's going to Bella's baby."

I smiled.

"You seem to have forgotten something. We didn't just get married. You married into the Fox family. Nothing of mine has anything to do with you."

"I let you work for me for five years, and somewhere along the way you forgot who actually owns this company."

I snapped cold:

"Fergus Henson! We're getting a divorce! You leave this marriage with nothing!"

"Effective immediatelyas the controlling owner of Sterling Group, I'm informing you both:

"You're fired! Security! Get these two out of my building. Now!"
