The Money I Paid Made My Brother the Family Hero
1: 1
The family group chat went off again. Thomas's wife, needling everyone the way she always did.
Turns out the real daughter's worth less than an adopted son.
Won't part with a dime, year after year. Poor old couple, raised themselves an ungrateful snake.
The relatives piled on, praising my brother for being so devoted.
Every year he posted screenshots of the forty thousand he supposedly wired home in support money.
I hadn't planned to say anything.
But once I saw the whole family debating how ungrateful I was.
I had to speak up.
Shanna, I think you've got the wrong idea.
I send Mom and Dad forty thousand every year too.
She wouldn't let it go.
She tagged me and told me to show proof.
To put out the fire, I drove to the bank.
Found a teller and pulled the statements on my mother's pension account.
Only then did I find out that the money I sent my parents every year got moved into my adopted brother's card by my mother.
Then wired back out again, under the name of support money.
Round and round it went. Their money never shrank, and my brother got praised for being a good son.
I was the only one left looking like a fool.
1. When I heard what the teller said, something in me went cold.
She told me, "Besides the forty thousand you deposit each year, this card has a linked supplementary card."
I couldn't help freezing.
"A supplementary card?"
"Yes, tied to a male account holder."
"For years now, once the pension hit the account each month, it was basically moved out that same day."
My hands were shaking as I listened.
I hesitated a moment, then took a photo of the statement.
And posted it straight into the family group chat.
Mom, Dad, what is this?
Where's the money from the card?
The chat went quiet for a good two minutes.
Neither of them answered me.
It was Thomas's wife who jumped in first, throwing it back at me.
So where's the pension?
Mom and Dad have been retired five, six years. That's at least ten thousand-plus a month between them, right?
How's there only a few hundred left on the card?
Serena Whitney, you didn't spend it all, did you?
I typed back, brows drawn.
I'd like to know what's going on too. Let Mom and Dad answer.
She sent a hand-over-mouth laughing emoji.
What are you waiting for? Haven't you had the card the whole time?
If the money's gone, who else is there to ask?
That's hundreds of thousands, Serena. If you really spent it, cough it up. Quit playing innocent.
Then my aunt suddenly chimed in.
Serena, honey, not that I want to say it, but do you know how hard your parents worked to raise you?
Fine, you won't give support money. But spending the old folks' money on top of that?
My uncle jumped in right after.
Exactly. Old people live off that little bit of money. How could you do it?
I said it long ago. A married daughter is water poured out the door, gone for good.
Look at Thomas. Sends money home every single year. That's what a good child looks like.
Then my cousin's wife echoed the rest.
She always looked so respectable. How could she do something like this?
No wonder she went silent earlier. Guilty conscience.
I stared at the screen, my chest tight, like something had lodged there.
I was the one sending money every year.
I was the one who never shorted them a cent.
And somehow I'd ended up the thief?
Mom, Dad, say something.
I tagged them both again.
You gave me the card. You're the ones who opened the supplementary card.
You know exactly what's going on here, don't you?
The chat went quiet again.
The relatives were all waiting, waiting for the old couple to say something.
More than ten minutes went by.
Finally my mother sent a voice message.
Her voice all wounded and put-upon.
"Serena how could you be like this?"
"We gave you the card to look after, and now the money's gone, and you're asking us?"
"We want to know where it went too!"
I couldn't believe my ears.
My finger pressed on the voice button and I just didn't know what to say.
It took me a long while before I got out a single line.
Mom, are you saying that I took the money?
"I never said that."
"But the card's been in your hands. There has to be some explanation, doesn't there?"
My father came right after.
"Enough. Stop fighting in the group. Have some shame."
First I laughed, then I felt the urge to cry.
I couldn't understand it. Why were they lying with their eyes wide open?
I was about to throw the transfer records out there.
When my mother's private voice message popped up first.
"Serena, Thomas is your brother."
"He isn't ours by blood, but you have to make allowances for how hard things are for him."
"He has no blood tie to us, he's sensitive about it, and your father and I have to look out for him a little more."
"This ends here."
"Don't go digging into it anymore, all right?"
2: 2
I opened the voice message again. And again.
By the time it reached the end, I couldn't even cry.
So they'd known everything.
So all of this had been planned from the very start.
Keeping the card in my name for safekeeping was nothing but an excuse.
Wiring money into it year after year was just me playing my part in their little show.
They took my money to save face for the adopted son.
Then sent it back under his name, so they could put on a picture of a devoted mother and grateful son in front of the relatives.
And me?
I was just the fool who footed the bill.
From the day that adopted boy walked through the door, everything in the house had changed.
So many things that were mine to begin with.
All of them handed over to my brother, whether I liked it or not.
From a small bag of snacks to the money for college.
I asked her back, "When will I finally stop being the one this family sacrifices?"
My mother answered right away.
"Sweetie, what are you even saying? How are you a sacrifice?"
"I just want you to give a little to your brother, that's all."
I didn't want to hear any of it.
I'd heard it all a thousand times.
I asked if she planned to keep covering it up forever.
She said no, of course not, just give her a little more time.
She'd clear my name soon enough.
She told me not to worry.
Said she'd set the whole thing straight with her daughter-in-law right away.
At the very least, she couldn't let the family think badly of me.
I typed. I deleted.
Typed again. Deleted again.
In the end I chose to let it go, for now.
Meanwhile, in the chat, my brother's wife was only getting worse.
How come someone's gone quiet all of a sudden?
Mom and Dad caught her being unfilial dead to rights, so now she's chickened out?
Weren't you loud enough a minute ago?
My aunt tagged me and sent a message.
Serena, you've broken your elders' hearts.
My uncle piled on.
How did our Whitney family ever produce a thing like this?
Other relatives joined the pile.
Just leave the group already, the sight of you makes me sick.
With a relative like you, I'm ashamed to admit it.
Without a word, I left the group right then.
Out of sight, out of mind.
The next day was my day off. I'd planned to sleep in.
At six in the morning, someone pounded on my door.
It was my adopted brother and his wife.
They had two bags of cheap fruit in their hands.
Grinning at me. "Morning, sis."
Remembering all of yesterday's garbage, I was full of anger.
But I still stepped aside and let them in.
"Sit down first."
I poured two glasses of water and set them on the coffee table.
"What is it you need?"
I thought they'd come to apologize.
I figured my mother had explained the whole thing on her end by now.
Instead I watched Shanna poke at Thomas Whitney.
Thomas hurried to speak.
"Sis, you know Shanna and I have been renting all this time."
"Now that she's pregnant, I was thinking of buying a place in a good school district."
I raised an eyebrow but didn't cut him off.
He went on.
"The thing is, I'm still short quite a bit."
"If you hand over Mom and Dad's retirement savings, that'd cover it perfectly."
My hand froze around the glass.
So my mother hadn't told them the truth at all.
So I asked them, calmly, "Where's the money? Don't the two of you know perfectly well?"
Shanna exploded on the spot.
"The card for the retirement savings is with you, and now the money's gone."
"If you didn't take it, who did? Us?!"
I let out a cold laugh.
"Honestly, you never know."
She shot to her feet. "I've got to say, you're really something as an older sister."
"In every other family, the sister helps her brother out."
"But you? Not only do you not help, you turn around and screw your brother over."
"That money is Mom and Dad's retirement. You swallowed all of it yourself. Aren't you afraid of what's coming to you?"
I didn't snap back. I looked at my adopted brother instead.
How good I'd been to him growing up, nobody knew better than he did.
And yet he chose to pretend he hadn't heard a word.
Shanna kept complaining. "The card's in her hands, the money's gone, and she's the one acting like she's in the right?"
"I was going to say this yesterday, with all those elders watching in the group."
"If she didn't have a guilty conscience, why leave the group at all?"
I set down the glass, stood, and walked to the door.
"Are you finished?"
"If you're finished, then please go."
Shanna crossed her arms, indignant. "Sis, what kind of attitude is that?"
I stared at her and spelled it out, one word at a time.
"I'll say it once more. Get out of my house now."
"You're not welcome here."
3: 3
3, my brother's wife sat on the couch and would not move.
My so-called brother saw it and dug in too, and he actually tried to talk me into it.
"Sis, just hand over Mom and Dad's retirement money."
"I swear, once we've got the money, we'll never bother you again."
I almost laughed out loud.
Five years of retirement savings. Six, seven hundred grand at least.
Scrape a little more together and they could pay for the house in full.
And no, they really wouldn't need to bother me again.
But where that money was, I honestly had no idea.
I reminded them again. "The money isn't with me."
"If you want it, go find Mom and Dad."
What his wife said next left me stunned.
"Mom and Dad are the ones who sent us to you."
"They said the money's all with you!"
So the whole family treated me like an ATM now?
Before I could get a word out, my brother suddenly spoke up.
"Sis, forget about Mom and Dad's retirement money for a second."
"You're a VP at Lincoln Tech. Your salary must be pretty good every month, right?"
Greed showed plain in his eyes.
"You just pull out a little of your savings, and it's enough for me and Shanna to buy a house."
"We'll remember what you did for us."
"Once the baby's born, we'll sign him over to you."
On the surface it sounded like there was nothing wrong with the offer.
But I knew exactly what they were angling for.
Wasn't it just because I was pushing forty this year and still had no kids?
They figured I didn't want to have my own, so they'd dump the baby on me.
And later chip away at my assets.
I looked at him, and my eyes went cold.
"Even if my salary is high, what does that have to do with you?"
"Didn't I earn every cent of it myself?"
"And the baby is yours. Why would you sign it over for me to raise?"
His wife let out a sneer beside him.
"Oh, please."
"Like we're so desperate for your help."
"Everyone knows how you clawed your way up in the first place."
I threw it back at her. "Go on then. Tell me how I clawed my way up."
"By carrying on with your boss, all that murky business."
"It was even in the news back then. Really disgusting."
"You can't even keep yourself decent, and you expect to raise a kid right?"
My face went hard in an instant.
Everything from back then came rushing up at once.
Fresh into the company, the CEO took notice of me and promoted me to assistant.
Then within two years I made VP.
That kind of speed really was startling.
And it bred suspicion inside the company.
But who ever understood what went into it?
Two of the company's core patents came out of research I led.
The core business, I was the one who brought it in.
How many nights I stayed at the office until two, three in the morning.
How many client dinners I drank through until my stomach bled.
None of that they saw.
All they saw was a young woman rising fast.
Then they made up a pile of filth.
It really had been in the news back then.
Someone spread the malicious rumor that I was sleeping with the boss.
I chose to let the truth speak for itself and never explained.
I never imagined my own family would use it to stab me in the back.
This was my line, and I warned her outright.
"Watch your mouth."
She wouldn't listen. If anything, she got louder.
"What, you'll do it but won't own it?"
"You're not clean yourself, and here you are acting so high and mighty."
"Who knows how many strange men you've been to bed with."
Cold-faced, I walked right up to her.
She tipped her chin up, still mouthing off.
"What are you going to do?"
"Am I wrong? You're nothing but a"
She didn't finish.
My hand came up, and I slapped her across the face.
4: 4
4. The slap cracked through the room, clean and loud.
Shanna froze where she stood.
One hand went to her cheek, her eyes stretched wide as she stared at me.
You... you dared to hit me?
Thomas lost it. He shot to his feet and yelled at me.
Sis, how could you raise a hand to Shanna?!
I shook out my wrist and answered.
That slap was to teach her to watch her mouth.
Say one more word and see what happens.
Shanna glared at me, shaking with rage.
Then she lunged, grabbing a fistful of my hair, yanking and screaming.
You shameless slut!
Everybody knows what you did to get where you are at that company!
What, nobody's allowed to say it now?
I tried to fight her off. Then Shanna screamed out.
Thomas, what are you standing there for? Get over here and help me!
I didn't think Thomas would actually do it.
But he was strong. He seized my arms and wouldn't let go.
Once Shanna saw I couldn't break free, her face twisted.
Go on, hit me! Why'd you stop?!
And she slapped me right back.
Then again.
Hitting me and taunting me both at once. Hit me back if you've got the guts!
Don't forget, Thomas isn't even blood-related to you.
Between you and me, who do you think he'll pick?
She leaned in close, her voice thick with triumph.
No, wait, even if you are blood-related to Mom and Dad.
They never took your side either.
I snapped my head down and bit into Thomas's hand.
He shrieked and let go on the spot.
I took the opening, clamped my hand around Shanna's throat, and pinned her to the wall.
My eyes burning red, I roared.
Maybe I should just tear that mouth off your face.
Save everyone the trouble you cause!
Her face went red under my grip, and just as she was about to choke.
Pain exploded at the back of my skull.
After the dull thud came the sound of a glass bottle shattering.
My hand fell away, and I touched my head.
Sticky.
I looked at my hand. It was covered in blood.
Shards littered the floor at my feet.
Thomas was still holding the base of the vase, all that was left of it, jabbing it at me as he cursed.
You crazy woman!
Mom and Dad don't like you, and you've got no one to blame but yourself!
My ears were ringing.
My eyelids started to drop.
And my mind blurred, out of my control.
I wanted to call the police.
My hand found my pocket, but I didn't even have the strength to pull out my phone.
I stumbled toward the door.
And then everything went dark.
When I woke again, I was lying in a hospital.
No one around.
The curtains were drawn. I couldn't tell if it was day or night.
My phone chimed once.
I forced my arm out to reach it and saw a text from my best friend.
Several photos.
And one more thing, a paternity test report.
I opened the photos, and my fingers went stiff.
I stared at them for a long time, something rearranging itself in my head.
After I texted her back, I set the phone down.
The door to the room swung open.
My mother came in.
Seeing I was awake, she hurried over, fussing.
Sweetie, you're finally awake.
When I heard you were in the hospital, it scared me half to death!
I looked at the face in front of me.
Familiar and a stranger both.
Flat, no expression, I asked her, Why didn't you ever tell Thomas and them the truth?
My mother hesitated.
I... I just haven't found the right time.
I nodded.
Fine. If you won't say it, I will.
Her face changed at that, and she cut in quickly.
Sweetie, don't be so stubborn.
Some things aren't as simple as you think.
I gave a small hum and let out a bitter laugh.
Then I said, off-hand, They really aren't simple at all.
Then my eyes dropped back to the phone screen.
After all, Thomas is your own flesh and blood too. Just fathered by another man.
Right?
