The Ransom I Paid Became His Death Sentence

Six years ago, my husband and I were taken during a trip abroad, a staged snatch that reeked of a setup even then. The blood tied to our name could only cover the ransom for one of us.

For Salvatore's sake, I chose to stay behind in that room and let him walk back into the light.

Later, a powerful man paid my ransom. In return, I served under him for six years and became the right hand no soldier dared cross.

In the sixth year, after I had helped him bury every threat that circled his territory, I was finally released from the debt. With nothing left holding me, I began the long road home.

But I never expected that when I returned, I would find Salvatore Marchetti already a made man, and still with no intention of ever coming for me. He was living happily with his first love, and they even had two children together.

Furious, I confronted him. I asked why he had not waited. Why he hadn't sent men once he had the muscle and the money to buy me back.

He looked at me with the flat eyes of a stranger and said, "Adriana, why would I save you?"

"You've been passed around God knows how many times these six years. Who knows if you're even clean anymore?"

The cruelty of it, the sheer cold weight of it, made me laugh in disbelief.

So this was the man I once loved so deeply. The one I gave everything for.

In that moment, all I felt for Salvatore Marchetti was hatred.

If that was how it would be, then he would pay every last cent of what he owed me. In full.

"Adriana Falcone, we're still bound. By the union, by the code. I'm about to be made, given my own rackets before the Commission. If you surface now, I will never let you go."

He stared at me, his voice as smooth and dead as a coin on a corpse's eyes.

Because if he cut me loose, he would have to hand over a fortune he could not bear to part with. And there was the price I had paid to keep his heart beating six years ago. If word ran through the families that Salvatore and I were splitting now, on the eve of his making, it would poison his standing with every Don at the table.

But I looked him in the eye and shook my head. "Salvatore Marchetti, let's end it."

He said nothing. He only lifted his hand and tipped it toward the men behind him. The next second they came forward, gripped my arms, and dragged me down the hall into a locked room.

"Cool your head in here."

Then, with that same detached expression, Salvatore added, "Do as I say and you stay my wife. In name."

"You'll want for nothing, and my children will see you cared for in your old age. Refuse to play along, and I'll ship you across the water where no one will ever hear you again."

With that cold gaze, he turned and left.

I was a prisoner in the Marchetti compound now. Two soldiers stood outside my door, killing any thought of the window, the hall, the gate.

But there was one thing Salvatore hadn't thought to take. My phone. In his eyes I was nothing but a woman who'd clawed her way back from overseas alone and helpless. A creature like that wouldn't have anything worth checking, so he didn't bother.

What he didn't know was that I hadn't come back alone.

I picked up the phone and made the call.

"Sir. I need your help."

My voice trembled, and the tears slipped down my cheeks before I could stop them.

"I warned you long ago, cara. A man who would leave you behind and run for his own skin would never stand beside you for life."

"Hold on three more days. Stay inside the Marchetti house and keep your head down. I'll be there."

His voice came through the phone, low and certain, and it steadied me. It grounded me the way nothing else in that room could.

What Salvatore never knew was that the very day he was pulled out of that room, Damiano Vitale had already come to stand before me. Not once in those six years was I touched. I was kept well. Exceptionally well, by a man whose name made rooms fall silent.

He had rewarded me beyond anything Salvatore could dream of counting. I was a woman of means now, richer than he could imagine.

The only misfortune in it all was that he no longer had anything to do with me.

Since the Don would not arrive for another three days, I had no choice but to remain inside the walls of the Marchetti estate.

What I did not expect was for Salvatore to come to my room that very night.

He sat across from me, stared into my eyes, and said, "Adriana, as long as you behave and wait until I'm made and given my own territory, I'll grant you the divorce."

"But when that time comes, you'll sign what I put in front of you. I'll give you one hundred and fifty thousand, and you'll take the money and disappear quietly."

"Bianca and I are together now. We have a child. Everything I build will belong to them."

I could not help but laugh at his words bitterly.

Six years ago, I gave up everything for Salvatore Marchetti. I sold off every asset I had back home just to cover his blood-debt and buy his freedom.

I still remember how, before they let him walk out of that staged abduction, he held me tightly and promised to raise the tribute to bring me home the moment he was clear.

He swore he would wait for me, no matter what.

And yet, what did he do once he was back on his own streets?

He went back to Bianca Serra almost the instant the door closed behind him.

Their eldest was already five. That meant he had never once intended to come for me.

The truth was, he had already decided I was 'tainted,' unworthy of a made man's name.

But if it had not been for him, would I have ever ended up in the hands of those men?

He was the one who insisted on that trip. I never even wanted to go.

And the ransom that bought his life back? That came from selling the roof over my own head.

Now, facing him again, I scoffed. "Salvatore, I understand perfectly."

Three more days. That was all I needed. I knew my Don held the right people in this city by the throat, quiet men in high places who owed him. Once he arrived, everything would fall into place.

As for Salvatore Marchetti? He meant nothing to me anymore.

"Fine. Sign this."

He slid a document across to me.

I glanced over it. It dissolved the union and promised me one hundred and fifty thousand in return for my silence.

Without hesitation, I signed it. "I've signed the papers, Salvatore. Can I leave now?"

I looked up and asked in a cold voice.

"Of course not. You'll stay here the next few days. You leave after I'm given my rackets and not a moment before."

He looked back at me without a flicker of feeling as he spoke. Then he rubbed his thumb once across his knuckles, the way he always did before the next words left him, and stood, and walked out of the room.

The two enforcers stationed at the door stepped forward and closed off my path, making any thought of leaving impossible.

I watched Salvatore's retreating back and shook my head in silent resignation.

I knew he would not let me walk out at a time like this.

Left alone in the room, I sat in the quiet, thinking of everything I had thrown away for that man. Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably.

I had given this man my youth, only to be cast off and locked away like this.

After crying until I was hollow, I realized I was starving. I had not eaten a thing all day.

I opened the door, meaning to ask for food.

But the moment I stepped out, the two enforcers barred me again.

"I need something to eat," I said flatly.

They looked at me coldly and shook their heads, saying nothing.

They ignored me completely, refusing to give an inch. In that moment, the chill in my heart deepened.

He had forced my signature, put soldiers at my door, and now he would not spare me a single bite of food.

Just as I was about to argue with the men blocking me, a woman came into the room carrying a basin. She looked at me with a bright, almost mocking smile, and smoothed her dress down over her hip with both palms.

Behind her stood two children.

The two of them stared at me with open curiosity.

Then the older one, Salvatore's son, jutted his small chin up in that borrowed way of his father's, pointed at me, and said loudly, "Mommy, is this the bitch you told us about?"

Hearing his words, I stared coldly at the little boy in front of me and said sharply, "I'm not a bitch. Your mother is."

"You're the bad one! You tried to steal my dad and now you're calling my mom a bitch!"

"I'll beat you up!"

He jutted his small chin up in the exact way his father did, then lunged at me, his little fists swinging toward my body.

I looked at the boy without a trace of emotion and pushed him away.

He fell to the marble floor and immediately burst into loud, pitiful cries that echoed off the walls of the compound.

Bianca's expression darkened. Without hesitation, she turned to the two soldiers standing at the door and snapped, "Hold her down."

At her command, the enforcers forced me to the floor, their hands like iron. Bianca crossed the room, her heels striking the stone in the silence, and slapped me twice across the face.

Pain stung my cheek, but I glared at her, unyielding.

"Adriana Falcone, let me tell you the truth. Salvatore and I are the ones truly in love."

"Do you really think he ever loved you?"

"You don't even know that the abduction was all a setup. Salvatore arranged it with the men who took you."

"He knew you would give up everything for him, so he used that. Do you know what he did after you paid to buy your freedom back? He took half of it for himself." She smoothed her dress down over her hip with both palms. "That blood-debt became the foundation of everything he holds today. His territory. His name."

Bianca looked at me with an icy smile and said coldly, "Because, at that time, I was already carrying Salvatore's child."

At those words, my expression darkened even further. I had not expected that all of it had been orchestrated by Salvatore's own hand.

So back then, every sweet word he whispered to me had been a complete lie.

"Adriana, you must've been passed around countless times in a place like that, no? I'd wager you're very good at serving men."

"Women like you are only fit to live like dogs."

As she looked at me and spat out those cruel words, a soldier set a shallow basin on the floor before me. The scrape of metal on stone was the only sound in the room.

I watched as she took out a bowl filled with dog food and poured it into the basin. Her voice was cold as ice. "People like you don't deserve real food. You only deserve this."

Then, without warning, she slapped me across the face again. Before I could react, she grabbed a fistful of the dog food and forced it into my mouth.

I struggled to spit it out, but she clamped her hand over my mouth, holding it shut, forcing me to swallow.

Bianca leaned close, her breath at my ear, and hissed, "Adriana, let me tell you something. Salvatore won't set foot in this house for two days. You'd better behave and stay right where you are."

"And as for food? This is all you're worthy of."

With that, she flung the rest of the dog food across me.

The little boy watched his mother press me to the floor and push handfuls of the stuff into my mouth. He burst out laughing, clapping his small hands with glee.

"Serves you right, bitch! You should eat dog food!"

He jutted his chin up again, that borrowed cruelty sitting badly on so small a face. "You're just a stray and no one loves you! And you still want to steal my dad from my mom?"

Still not satisfied, he ran up and stomped on my face with his little foot, then turned and walked off proudly, chin high.

Bianca looked down at me one last time and said mockingly, "What? Can't handle this?"

"You should be used to it by now, shouldn't you? In a place like that, serving men day in and day out. This is just your ordinary life, isn't it?"

"Hmph. Maybe they threw you out because you were too sick, and even they didn't want you anymore."

I glared at her, the fury burning behind my eyes, but she only smirked with satisfaction before turning on her heel and leaving the room. The lock turned behind her.

I knew then that Bianca would not be paying me any mind for a good while.

I watched the two enforcers pull the door shut behind them. When I was sure their footsteps had died down the hall, I slipped the phone from beneath the mattress and called the Don.

"Padrino they won't even give me food."

I swallowed the last of my pride and let my voice drop low. "Bianca she made me eat from a dog's bowl."

For six years I had stood at this man's right hand, loyal beyond question, and in return he had given me a life most women only dreamed of. Not merely dignity. The finest table, silk against my skin, a house that wanted for nothing, cars that moved like shadows through the city. I had lived as a woman of means in the Don's world.

I had not felt this small in years.

His voice came through the line, cold as a blade left out in winter. "After tonight, I'll be there. You'll see me with your own eyes."

Beneath the calm I could hear it, the anger banked like a fire waiting for air.

I ended the call and hid the phone again. That little device was the last thread tying me to hope.

I did not call the Feds. It would have been useless. Even if I had, Salvatore would find a way to keep me buried in this house. He'd tell them I'd come back broken from what happened overseas, that my mind had cracked under the abduction, that nothing out of my mouth could be trusted. And once the badges were gone, whatever came for me would be far worse.

So I lay there with the hunger gnawing at me in the dark, and eventually sleep pulled me under.

By early morning, I saw Salvatore again.

The moment he crossed the threshold, his hand cracked across my face.

"Adriana, you vicious woman!" he roared.

"How dare you lay a hand on my son?"

"So I didn't come for you. So what? That doesn't give you the right to touch a child!"

His face went darker with every word, and the next slap landed harder than the first.

My cheek swelled instantly. When I tried to open my mouth, it filled with the metallic taste of blood. My lip had split under the force of his hand.

But the sight of me like that didn't move him. He stepped in close and drove his shoe into my stomach without hesitation.

The blow landed low and pain twisted my face as a cry tore loose from me.

His kick caught me square and I crumpled to the floor with a sharp scream.

Even curled up and shaking, I got no mercy from him. He kept coming, fists and feet, no restraint left in him at all.

His boy stood in the doorway, clapping and cheering.

"Yeah! That's right! This bitch needs to know how strong I am!"

"Dad, you're amazing! You made her cry!"

The child kept applauding, his small face lit up with borrowed delight, his little chin jutting up in perfect imitation of his father.

Then Salvatore fisted a handful of my hair and dragged my head back, his voice a low snarl. "Adriana, listen to me. You put a hand on my son again, I'll kill you."

I looked up at him, fear clouding my eyes.

He had gone completely mad.

"Dad, let me hit her next! Beat her to death, now!" the boy shouted, pointing at me, his chin thrust high.

Salvatore turned to him with a smile and a nod. He laughed, a half-beat too soon, and rubbed his thumb across his knuckles. "Of course, my good boy. Don't worry. Daddy will make sure this woman learns her place today."

Then he glared back down at me and raised his hand to strike again.

In that moment all I could feel was raw terror.

Even the men who had staged my abduction had not been this brutal.

I truly believed I would die here, beaten to death on the floor by the man I once bound my life to. And then Bianca's scream cut through the air from somewhere beyond the door.

"Who are you? How dare you break into my house?"

And in that instant, the whole house seemed to go still around her voice, and I knew. The Don had come.
