Boyfriend Said Give Invention to Maid's Daughter; I Jailed Them

My invention won first prize, but the name on the award belonged to Eva Finch, the daughter of my boyfriend's family housekeeper.

When it came time to register for the competition, my boyfriend was the one who'd offered to sign me up.

I confronted him, and he turned it back on me, snapping:

Eva's mom is sick. I put Eva's name on the award to make her happy. Can you not be so vain about it?

"Her mom took care of me for twenty years. She's no different from my own mother. Just think of it as showing your devotion early!"

His words actually made me laugh.

We'd been dating two years, and already he was assigning me filial duties?

But what he didn't know was that this award was national.

Claiming it under a false name was enough to land someone in prison for years.

If he thought throwing himself behind bars to honor a housekeeper was worth it, then good for him.

...

When school started and I came back, banners hung everywhere. Congratulations to our own Eva Finch on her award-winning invention!

Except the robot in the photo was clearly my invention.

Over summer break, when I was getting ready to submit for the award, my boyfriend Stewart Delgado had said I was working too hard and offered to handle the paperwork for me.

I rushed into the classroom.

"Stewart, why is my award under Eva Finch's name? Did the award committee make a mistake, or did you write it down wrong when you submitted?"

The whole class was crowded around Eva, congratulating her. When they heard me, her sweet little smile turned guilty.

Stewart stood up and stepped in front of Eva, righteousness written all over his face.

"That's right, I didn't help you steal it!"

"Eve Fox, if you want an award, you earn it with your own ability. Asking me to help you steal Eva's, what kind of thing is that? Even if you threatened to break up with me, I would never do something like that!"

The other students bent their heads and started whispering.

"What's going on? Eve wanted Stewart to help her steal Eva's invention?"

"That's shameless. I didn't think Eve was that kind of person."

Me, steal from Eva? I was so angry I almost laughed.

"Stewart, what are you talking about? Who did I steal from? This robot was always"

Stewart shoved me, cutting me off.

"This robot took Eva half a year of hard work to build."

"When Eve found out, she wouldn't leave me alone. She kept pushing me to get it for her. Said she wanted an award just for fun."

"She said, 'Isn't Eva just your family's housekeeper's daughter? You order her to hand it over, and she wouldn't dare say no.'"

"But Eve, a housekeeper is a person too. A housekeeper's daughter deserves respect too. I will never help you with something like that."

Stewart's twisting of black into white had me shaking.

"Stewart, what nonsense is this? This robot was my invention from the start!"

Eva walked up with red eyes and took my hand.

"Evie, don't blame Stewart. It's all my fault."

"Stewart, since Evie wants it so badly, I'll just give it to her. I"

Eva covered her mouth, sobbing so hard she couldn't speak.

Stewart wrapped an arm around Eva's shoulders and roared at me.

"Eve, stop twisting the truth. The award committee already announced the list. You still won't give it up?"

"If this is your invention, then tell me, why is it in Eva's name?"

I stared him down.

"Because you were the one who submitted it for me that day."

I opened my chat history with Stewart.

That day, he'd messaged me to say he was going to register the award for me, and told me to get some rest.

I scrolled through the messages and found that one had been deleted.

I jerked my head up, stunned, and met the smug smile on Stewart's face.

He knew my phone password. I'd never guarded anything from him.

I looked at him, unable to believe it.

"Stewart, you actually deleted my chat history behind my back?"

Stewart's brow creased with disgust.

"How is every word out of your mouth a lie?"

"I never said anything like that. You can't produce any proof, so you say I deleted it?"

One student spoke up: "Let me settle this fairly."

"Eve, since you say you made the robot, you must have saved the original data files, right?"

"Just look at your original archive and we'll know."

I took out my laptop, but a bad feeling was already rising in me.

It booted up. I clicked on the D drive, and the corner of Stewart's mouth curved up, so faint it was almost impossible to catch.

My archive folder was gone.

Sweat beaded across my forehead.

Eva Finch pulled out her laptop, sniffling.

I have the original files. Everyone can look. I really did start this six months ago.

She clicked the mouse a few times, and a folder named Robot Data appeared.

Every document inside was work I had poured night after night into.

The folder's creation date read six months ago, February 16, 2026.

The classmates looked at me with open contempt.

Eve, Eva's already shown her proof. What else is there to say?

You're not going to tell us she stole the files too, are you?

I looked at them.

Why not? Stewart came to my house all the time over the summer. He had plenty of chances

Laughter cut me off.

Come on, Eve. Stewart's your boyfriend. He steals from you to hand it to the housekeeper's daughter? Who's going to believe that?

If you ask me, you're jealous of Eva, and you wanted Stewart to use his pull to push her around, and he wouldn't do it!

Stewart put on his patient, well-meaning face too.

Eve, I'm saying this for your own good. Something stolen is never really yours. I believe one day you'll win an award on your own merit.

I turned to Eva.

Since you made it, can I ask you a few technical questions?

She bit her lip and lifted her chin stubbornly. Go ahead. I'm not afraid.

From design principles to data calculations, Eva answered without a single stumble.

I listened to her answers and smiled bitterly inside.

Over the summer, Stewart had clung to me, always asking me to walk him through the details.

He said he was interested, so I told him everything.

I never imagined he was pulling out answers for Eva.

But what he didn't know was that some things weren't in those answers.

I tilted my head and looked at Eva.

You're very good. It's just a pity you committed a crime.

I turned and walked out of the classroom.

A wave of mockery followed me out.

Eve, are you here to make us laugh?

I can't. She can't save face so she runs, and she still calls someone else a criminal. A crime of what? Being too good?

I had just reached the field when Stewart came after me.

He grabbed me by the arm.

Eve, do you have any idea how far you went today?

I shook him off.

Too far? My invention was stolen. What am I supposed to do to not be too far? Applaud and congratulate her?

Stewart lowered his voice into a growl. You know perfectly well Gertrude is sick!

I let Eva take the award just to make Gertrude happy. I never thought you'd be this vain, that you'd make a fuss over something this small!

His words actually made me laugh.

So the person who steals an award isn't vain, but the person it was stolen from isn't allowed to speak, and telling the truth makes her the vain one?

If Eva wants to make her mother happy, she can win an award on her own ability, not by stealing someone else's.

Stewart let out a cold laugh.

Eve, you just cobbled together some lousy robot. What is there to be so arrogant about?

Eva can't do this stuff not because she isn't capable, but because she didn't have your luck, no family behind her lifting her up.

If she'd had the same advantages as your family, her achievements would be far higher than yours!

I raised an eyebrow. Your family has the advantages. So where are your achievements?

How come you never came up with an invention to hand to Eva so she could win an award?

Stewart couldn't hold his expression, so he changed the subject.

"Bottom line, I'm telling you, this award belongs to Eva. Watch your mouth."

"Gertrude took care of me for twenty years. She's practically my second mother. Once you marry me, you'll be honoring her too."

"Just think of this invention as you getting a head start on being a good daughter-in-law."

I brought my hand up and slapped him across the face.

"If you can't talk like a decent human being, shut up."

"Stewart, if you don't set today's story straight, you can start getting ready for prison."

I turned to leave, and he yanked me back, pulling my phone out of my bag.

"So you were recording. I knew it."

He gave a contemptuous little laugh, deleted the recording, then checked my cloud drive too, just to be sure.

"Now you've got no evidence left. If you go around running your mouth, you're the one going to prison."

He tossed the phone back at me and walked off.

I watched his back and quietly pressed the button on my glasses.

I really had been recording.

Just not audio. Video.

These glasses were my invention too, made to help students in class, with a built-in recording function.

The phone recording was only a smokescreen for Stewart, thrown out so he wouldn't dig through my other things.

What had just happened in the classroom was already all over the school forum.

The whole board was mocking me.

Getting her boyfriend to help steal the housekeeper's daughter's invention. The nerve of her, thinking that up.

Good thing Stewart's an honest guy, or who'd stand up for the underdog?

Best episode ever of a poor kid coming out on top! I feel refreshed just reading it!

Heard the award committee's coming to our school in person next week to hand out the prize. Think Eve's going to lose her mind?

Coming to the school next week for the ceremony?

I opened the official site, and sure enough, there it was: the award committee, amazed that someone like Eva with no training at all could invent a robot, was coming to the school to present her with a special award.

I put the glasses away and dropped the idea of sending the video evidence to the committee. Instead, I left an anonymous comment in the comment section.

Could they demo the robot on the day of the ceremony? We'd all love to see it.

I gave it a few likes from a burner account, then forwarded the comment to a couple of tech enthusiast groups.

By the next day, the comment had shot to the top, and the award committee had replied to it themselves:

We've received the students' request. Consider it arranged!

I smiled, satisfied.

Since Eva loved the spotlight so much, I'd let her have a big one.

It would also keep anyone from claiming, if I quietly took the award back myself, that I'd used some dirty trick to steal it from her.

Soon the day of the ceremony arrived.

The whole school, teachers and students, had gathered on the field, waiting to watch the poor girl made good receive her honor.

"Eve spent over a hundred grand on robotics classes and still didn't win. Eva did it all on her own. That's what you call earning it."

"She's really made ordinary people proud. I'm so moved I could cry."

"Eve actually showed up. Some nerve. If I were her, I'd be too ashamed to be seen."

I tilted my head and looked over.

"Why would I have no face to be here?"
