The Iron Ring of the Forgotten Bride

Adriana's POV

The nature of my work keeps me apart from ordinary people. I rarely cross paths with anyone outside the circle I was raised in.

Naturally, my mother started to worry. She thought I might not be into men. So she took matters into her own hands and arranged a union for me, a marriage bound between bloodlines.

The man on paper was perfect. He was good-looking, charming, and the heir apparent to the most powerful Don in the city.

Since I spent most of my days behind closed doors and rarely had time for anything as ordinary as shopping, my superior had a wedding gown made for me by hand, every seam stitched with care.

On the day of the wedding, I went to change and walk to the altar, only to find my gown crumpled in the trash.

Before I could even make sense of it, the personal courier of my so-called groom swept into the room and thrust a bridesmaid's dress at me, chin lifted like she owned the floor beneath my feet.

"What are you staring at? The ceremony's about to start. Get dressed," she barked.

I forced myself to stay calm and replied, "I'm the bride. And you expect me to wear this?"

She rolled her eyes as if I were being ridiculous. "Just put it on. No need to make a scene."

Then she touched the pearls at her throat and laughed a half-beat too quickly. "Mr. Falcone said himself. I'll be the one taking your place at the altar."

I stood there, stunned. It took me a moment to react before I pulled out my phone and dialed the groom.

"Mr. Falcone," I said, keeping my voice level. "Don't you think your Family owes me some explanation for this little switch?"

This union had been filed and cleared through more levels than she could imagine, sanctioned from a height no Don in this city could reach. If word got out that I'd been swapped at the last moment, the disrespect would echo far past this room.

I was willing to let it go if he owned it and apologized. But all I got was a sneer down the line.

"Explanation? What exactly do you want me to explain?" His tone dripped with contempt.

"Mr. Falcone, I know we've never actually met before today," I said, "but I am meant to be your bride. Letting another woman stand in my place at the altar. Isn't that a little absurd?"

Before I could finish, he hung up.

I froze.

Was this how the sons of powerful men behaved?

The courier chuckled right in my face. "Miss Valente, do yourself a favor and change. You should be grateful. Marrying into the Falcone Family? You must have saved a nation in a past life."

She took one look at my plain gown and modest face and clearly decided I wasn't worth her breath.

"I am the bride. There's no way I'm putting that on," I said. Then I nodded toward one of the men posted by the door and went on. "And if you keep pushing me, I'll have the enforcers walk you out."

I thought that would rattle her. It didn't. She only grew bolder.

"Miss Valente," she sneered, "this is New York. This is Falcone ground. You think a single man here would dare lift a finger for you?"

Her voice climbed, and flecks of spit landed on my face while she ranted.

I clenched my fists, my eyes narrowing.

"Ridiculous," I said coldly. "A jumped-up heir playing at royalty just because his Family holds this city. What a joke."

The words had barely left my mouth when she shot me a look that could bury a man.

"Who the hell do you think you are, throwing a tantrum on Falcone territory?" she shouted. "This is your final warning. Put on that dress, or I swear I'll turn your wedding into a funeral."

I have kept to one place since I came of age. I have no public face, no reputation that walks ahead of me into a room. No one had ever threatened me like this, to my face, without knowing to be afraid.

But she had crossed a line.

My anger boiled over.

I twisted the plain iron ring on my right hand once, slowly.

"I don't believe you," I said firmly.

The whole room fell silent. The associates near the door drew in their breath.

"Madonna, is this girl insane? She just went head-to-head with Miss Bianca. Is she already tired of breathing?"

"It's just a dress, for God's sake. She's going to throw away a marriage into the Falcones over cloth? She'll regret it if she does."

"Right? She's lucky to be marrying into that Family at all. Who cares who stands at the altar?"

Adriana's POV

As the whispers around us grew louder, the courier's smug expression only deepened. She touched the pearls at her throat, and her laugh came a half-beat too quickly.

You hear that? she sneered. A nobody like you, no bloodline, no name worth speaking, thinking you can stand at the altar? Keep dreaming, sweetheart.

Yet, their mockery didnt faze me one bit. If anything, I found it kind of funny.

Bianca Rizzo, right? I said calmly. Let me repeat myself one last time. Give me back my wedding dress.

But instead of hearing me out, she simply sneered, Bring back your wedding dress, my ass!

She even cursed at me a few more times, then apparently decided that wasnt enough. She rolled up her sleeves and stormed toward me.

What now? I shot back. The Falcones' lapdog cant argue with words, so you go straight to violence?

Without any more words, she swung at my face several times, but never even touched the hem of my dress. That only made her more furious.

You little bitch! Just stand there again and see what happens! she barked. You want me to call Lorenzo right now?!

Despite her threat, I still didnt react or retaliate. I just stood there in silence.

It wasnt because I was scared.

It was because before I left, the Consigliere who ran my orders had pulled me aside and reminded me, Every word you say and every move you make reflects on the Commission. So stay calm, no matter what happens.

Also, I dont fight. But if I ever do strike back, Im not aiming for warnings. I aim to end it.

Yet, Bianca seemed to think my silence meant Id backed down. So she balled her fist and lunged again.

But just then, a deep voice thundered from the entrance.

Enough!

A tall man with broad shoulders and a commanding presence strode in, a wall of enforcers flanking him. Conversations died the instant he crossed the threshold.

Bianca! he snapped. Youre my personal courier. What are you doing throwing punches in public, at my own wedding?

So this was him. Lorenzo Falcone, the groom. The heir apparent of the Falcone Family.

I gave him a quick once-over. My mother hadnt lied. He looked like a man pulled straight from a magazine, close to six foot three, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, handsome, and refined.

If I had to point out a flaw, itd be the way he looked at me. Cold, detached, like I wasnt even human.

Signor Falcone, I said, stepping forward with a calm smile. Since were finally meeting, allow me to introduce myself. Im Adriana Valente from

That wont be necessary, he interrupted, waving a hand impatiently. Im not the least bit interested in who you are.

For a second, I thought Id misheard him.

I was supposed to be his bride, the Falcones' future daughter-in-law, the woman meant to seal a bond between bloodlines.

And here he was, publicly humiliating me before the wedding even started, before every made man in the room.

Signor Falcone, I said, keeping my composure, I understand this union came from our fathers, and weve never met before. But at the very least, you could let me finish a sentence. Isnt that basic courtesy?

His expression immediately darkened at what Id said. One finger went to the knot of his tie, loosening it a fraction.

Courtesy? he scoffed. Adriana, do me a favor. Go find a mirror, take a good look at yourself, and ask if someone like you deserves me.

He then shot me a contemptuous glance and let out a short, bitter laugh.

Let me make one thing crystal clear, he continued. If my father hadnt forced this alliance on me, I wouldnt have spared you a second look. You bring absolutely nothing to the table.

Then he turned to the room, his voice rising, and not one man there dared meet his eyes.

And dont get any ideas. Just because theres a wedding today doesnt mean youre gonna carry the Falcone name. Im never going to touch you. Not in this lifetime.

Instead of drowning in embarrassment or loneliness, I simply let out a small laugh and shrugged.

Well, since youve made your stance so clear, I wont try to push this any further, I said casually.

Then my tone dropped, cooler and sharper. But that said

Adriana's POV

I think its safe to say this union doesnt need to happen anymore.

That was me, trying to end things peacefully, the way you dissolve a bad arrangement before blood gets spilled. But the heir apparent standing in front of me clearly didnt get the message. He thought I was playing coy.

Quit the act, Adriana, he scoffed. You think I havent seen this trick before? Running hot and cold to reel me in? You know how many women in this city would kill to marry into the Falcone name?

Finding him ridiculously amusing, I couldnt help but laugh. Mr. Falcone, I honestly dont care what those women want. I just dont want anything to do with you. And as for that precious bloodline you cant stop talking about I gave a dry chuckle. Please.

That was enough to send the entire dressing room into chaos.

Oh my god! Did she just spit on his blood to his face? Shes completely out of her mind!

No kidding! Lorenzo Falcone is every womans dream in this city. This idiot doesnt know how lucky she is!

If it were me, I wouldnt care what dress I had to wear. Getting the Falcone name is all that matters!

The room buzzed with judgment, but none of it mattered to me.

Sure, the Falcones held their territory here in New York, and their rackets ran clean behind hotels and shipping lines that stretched across the country.

But what good was laundered cash when it was just numbers on a ledger?

Because when it came to real power, money folded.

I still remembered how Lorenzos father, Don Salvatore Falcone himself, bent low for me across a quiet table.

The man was drenched in sweat inside thirty minutes, afraid every word he said might cost him the whole Family.

And now, the empire he begged so hard to protect was about to be burned down by his own son.

Adriana, Im asking you one last time. Are you really calling off the union? he asked.

I met his eyes with steady resolve and nodded firmly. Absolutely.

He clearly didnt expect me to be so decisive. His face darkened instantly.

But before he could answer, the courier jumped in. Dont trouble yourself, Mr. Falcone. Ill square it with your father. Shes a nobody off the street, after all. Youre better off without her. Biancas fingers grazed the pearls at her throat, and her laugh came a half-beat too quick.

Lorenzo hesitated, nodding slightly, though something uncertain flickered in his eyes.

But the invitations have already gone out. Every made man in the city is coming. If we call it off now, it stains the Familys honor, he worried.

Bianca pressed a hand to her chest. Mr. Falcone, dont you worry. Im still standing right here, arent I?

Catching her meaning, Lorenzos eyes lit up. You mean

She nodded, practically glowing. We go on with the wedding. Ill be the bride.

Lorenzo looked like he could weep from gratitude. Bianca thank you. Youre really saving the whole thing.

Dont worry, she said sweetly, her fingers still at those pearls. Once its done, I know your Family will take good care of me.

Watching this circus unfold, I let out a cold laugh. Alright, thats enough. Mr. Falcone, now that your little wedding disaster is patched over, isnt it time we discussed what you owe me?

Then I pointed toward the trash can not far from us. That gown was stitched by hand, by my own people, just for today. You owe me an explanation and compensation.

The moment I finished, the room burst into laughter again.

She mustve lost her mind. Its just a dress!

Seriously, the Falcones could buy her a hundred, no, a thousand gowns and not even blink.

I swept my eyes around the room, voice turning to ice.

Adriana's POV

"Listen, all of you. The gown itself, maybe it isn't worth much," I said calmly. "But what it stands for can't be measured in laundered cash."

Lorenzo clearly didn't grasp the weight of what I was saying.

"It's just a damn dress," he muttered, walking toward me across the marble floor of the reception hall. "Why act like it means something?"

He drew closer, smirking. "Let me guess. You're just trying to squeeze more tribute out of me, aren't you? Go on, name your price. A hundred grand? A million?"

I held back the fury building inside me and locked eyes with him. "Mr. Falcone, do you seriously believe everything in this world can be settled with money?"

He raised an eyebrow with the ease of a man who had never once been refused, mockery bare in his voice. "Doesn't it?"

"Adriana," he said, voice hardening, "maybe you forgot. This is New York. Falcone territory. You want to test me? One call, and no one finds a trace of you in this city."

I clenched my fists and forced myself to stay composed, answering slowly and clearly. "Mr. Falcone, I just want to be sure. Was that a threat?"

Before he could answer, his courier cut in with a snarl. "Damn right it was. What, you gonna cry about it?"

Bianca squared up to me, pearls at her throat catching the low light. "Come on, tough girl. Hit me. I dare you."

I turned to her with a cold, emotionless gaze. "Let me guess. You actually think being some man's lapdog is something to be proud of. Am I right?"

Her face went beet red. She stammered, one finger jabbing at me, too flustered to find a comeback.

Lorenzo stepped in fast, sliding her behind him. "Who the hell are you calling a lapdog? Bianca's been with me since she was nothing. She's practically famiglia. Apologize to her right now, or I promise you don't walk out of this room."

Funny. Within a single hour, I'd taken a threat twice over.

In all my years sworn to the Commission, moving through rooms where a wrong word ended a bloodline, I'd never once imagined something this small and this stupid happening to me.

This time, I was done talking.

I drew my phone in front of all of them and calmly placed a call.

"Hello. It's Adriana."

The voice on the other end brightened instantly. "Well, if it isn't Adriana. What's the trouble? You finally meet the man they've bound you to? You like what you see?"

I glanced at the man standing across from me and let out a cold chuckle. "It's a long story. But I have something to report, and it can't wait. Someone threw the gown you had made for me into a garbage can. What did you say?"

The shock in his voice nearly split the speaker.

"You better not be joking with me, Adriana. That gown had the Commission's seal stitched into it."

My blood was boiling now too.

"You think I'd joke about that? And the one who trashed it? She didn't apologize. She stood there and threatened to kill me," I added.

Then I laid out everything that had happened, plain and complete, and by the end I heard glass shattering somewhere on his end of the line.

"Who was it?" he asked, and his voice had gone very quiet.

Just as I opened my mouth to answer, Bianca snatched the phone from my hand.

"You're the so-called boss she keeps blabbing about?" she scoffed. She touched the pearls at her throat and laughed a half-beat too quickly. "I'm Lorenzo Falcone's personal courier. You've got a problem, you take it up with me."

The line went silent for several seconds. Somewhere on the other end, a man who had ordered graves dug was deciding what to make of a woman who spoke to him like that.

"So you're the one who destroyed Adriana's gown," he said at last, "and then turned around and threatened her."

She still didn't understand what she was holding in her hand. She stayed as cocky as ever.

"Enough talk. Just tell me what you want," Bianca barked.

"You'll find out soon enough," he replied, calm as still water.

Even through the phone, I could feel the fire under it.

But Bianca didn't hear the difference between a calm man and a patient one, and she fired back without missing a beat.

"Old man, you've been watching too many pictures, haven't you?" she scoffed. "Let's see who in this city actually dares go up against the Falcone Family."

She hung up and turned to Lorenzo with a smug little grin, proud of herself, waiting for praise like a dog waits for scraps.

I couldn't help it. I laughed.

"Mr. Falcone, you really know how to pick them," I said, smirking. "Even across all Five Families, I've never met anyone quite as fearless as your courier."

Bianca missed the blade under the words entirely. She rolled her eyes. "Please. I don't care who your so-called boss is. As long as Mr. Falcone runs things, the Falcones aren't going anywhere."

I tilted my head slightly and gave a small smile. Under the table's edge, out of their sight, I twisted the plain iron ring on my right hand once, slowly.

"Is that so? Then let me ask you something. What happens if, after today, there is no Falcone Family left in this city?"

Right then, a man near the tall windows suddenly shouted, "Look outside!"

Everyone rushed to the glass.

Down in the courtyard, a long line of black cars was rolling in, each one bearing the mark of the Commission, sleek and silent and terrible. The whole convoy slid toward the venue like a verdict already passed, and one by one, every man in the room went still.
