Comments Say the Banquet Baby Is My Grandson, I Deny It
At the one-month baby celebration, my son-in-law held up the grandson my daughter had conceived only after six rounds of IVF and asked me to name him.
Instead, I pulled out a bottle of weed killer and a rope, and told him to pick one.
My son-in-law was stunned.
Dad, today is Baby's one-month celebration. Picking something like this is bad luck, isn't it.
The livestream comments cursed me for being an idiot too.
Your daughter has blocked fallopian tubes, and your son-in-law drank who knows how many folk remedies before they finally had this child, and now you want to kill him?
You have no sons, only a daughter. If you really kill this child, you'll cut off your whole family line!
Stop making a scene and hurry up and bring out the solid gold baby bracelet you prepared for your grandson.
Maybe your son-in-law will be so happy he'll go through IVF again and give you a granddaughter, so you get one of each!
But I gave a cold laugh.
"Last night my ancestor came to me in a dream and said an alien bloodline has entered this house. This child is absolutely not of my family's blood!"
"He dares to pass off some bastard as my grandsonhe deserves to die!"
With that, I snatched the weed killer off the table and violently poured it toward the child's mouth!
...
"Dad! You've lost your mind! This is your own grandson!"
My son-in-law, Ryan, screamed in fright and threw himself over the child at once.
But I held up the bottle of weed killer, my face blank.
"I haven't lost my mind. An alien bloodline has entered this house. He's not my grandson, he's a bastard!"
"A bastard deserves to die!"
Holding what was left of the weed killer, I reached out to grab the child.
But Ryan shielded him and backed away several steps, glaring at me furiously.
"Dad! I know you don't like me! You think I'm poor and not good enough for your precious daughter."
"But I went through six rounds of IVF with Norma, tried countless folk remedies, and only barely managed to have Baby."
"If you want to touch him, you'll have to step over my dead body first!"
Ryan clenched his fists tight.
But I thought what he said made a lot of sense.
After all, what kind of decent man would use a bastard to muddy my Pruitt family's bloodline?
I nodded in agreement. "Fine!"
"Then I'll send you down to hell first, and then send this bastard down to keep you company!"
I grabbed the weed killer and violently poured it toward Ryan's mouth.
The relatives beside me were terrified by how crazy I looked and jumped up at once to stop me.
"Brendan, calm down!"
"Think how much Norma suffered to give birth to this child. How could he not be your own grandson?"
"We all know you don't like Norma, but she's been with your daughteryour daughter and Ryan have been together so long, they even had a child."
"For the child's sake, stop making a scene!"
Even the comments were telling me not to go crazy.
Ryan loves your daughter so much, how could this child not be your family's blood?
Isn't IVF humiliating? He gritted his teeth and did it six times, all to carry on your family line, didn't he?
I'm begging you, stop making a scene. If you keep this up, you're going to destroy a perfectly good family!
Only I knew the truth.
I wasn't destroying this familyI was saving it!
Ryan had suffered a lot to have this child.
And I was grateful to him for supporting my daughter, with her blocked fallopian tubes, through IVF.
But my ancestor would never lie to me!
Last night in my dream he told me an alien bloodline had entered this house, and this child could never be of my Pruitt family's blood.
That bastard passing himself off as my grandson deserved to die!
I wrenched myself free from my relatives' grip.
I snatched up the rope beside me, ready to rush over and strangle the child in Ryan's arms.
When they saw I was serious, my relatives went pale with fright.
They held me back, swearing up and down.
"Brendan, Ryan's an honest man. He'd never cheat on your daughter behind her back!"
"Calm down! Today is your grandson's one-month celebration. Do you really want to destroy this family?"
Then they quickly called my daughter and told her to come back.
"Norma, where are you? Get to the hotel, quick!"
"Your father's gone mad. He keeps insisting that the child you risked your life to have with Ryan isn't his grandson, and he wants to kill him!"
Too bad she hadn't even finished before I was standing right in front of her, the hemp rope in my hand.
Looking at the hemp rope in my hand, as thick as a baby's arm, I was less than half a meter from her.
Close enough to lunge and strangle her with it at any moment.
The relative who'd tipped off my daughter was so frightened they started stammering.
"Brendan, don't say thatthe child Norma had is definitely hers."
"And even if it isn't, that's got nothing to do with me!"
"It's not like I egged Ryan on to go cheat on your daughter with someone else..."
But I went around her, straight to the kitchen.
The weed killer had to be spread, the hemp rope still had to be pulled tight.
A cleaver was more convenient.
I grabbed a bone cleaver from the kitchen and returned to the banquet hall.
I was about to strike at Ryan and the child, who were surrounded by relatives trying to comfort them.
But before I could act, a pair of hands seized my arm and held on tight.
"Dad! Haven't you made enough of a scene?"
"I know you've never liked Ryan, but that doesn't give you the right to slander the child I gave birth to as not being your grandson!"
"You spread these lies in front of all these relativeshow is my child supposed to hold his head up when he grows up?"
But I stood my ground, full of righteous conviction.
"Pah! A bastard pretending to be my grandson, and he wants to live like a decent person?"
"I'll send him straight to hell right now!"
"Maybe the King of Hell will be kind enough to send this bastard off to be reborn sooner!"
I raised the bone cleaver and swung it down again at the child in Ryan's arms.
But my daughter threw herself in front of Ryan and the child.
I pulled back as fast as I could, but the cleaver still caught my daughter's shoulder.
Blood soaked through her coat, and I was terrified too.
I quickly grabbed her hand, meaning to take her to the hospital.
But my daughter flung me off.
Clutching her wounded shoulder, my daughter looked at me like I was a stranger.
"Dad, I used to think you just didn't like Ryan, and that you couldn't bring yourself to love the child I had with him either."
"That's why you made up that lie about our ancestors coming to you in a dream, to humiliate him and my baby."
"But I never imagined you were this viciousthat you actually wanted to kill my child!"
"I don't need your fake kindness taking me to the hospital. Get out of my child's one-month celebration, now! I don't have a father like you, and my child doesn't have a wicked grandfather like you either!"
I couldn't believe it.
She was actually driving me out for the sake of this bastard!
The livestream comments joined in, gloating.
Serves you right for going crazy and slandering people! See what you've done now? Your daughter's disowned you.
Just apologize to your daughter and son-in-law already! They're not really mad at you, they just can't stand you making a scene at the baby's one-month celebration.
As long as you're sincere and bring out that big gold bracelet again, you can still be a happy family!
But I clenched my fists.
My wife passed early, and I raised my daughter all on my own, being both father and mother to her.
Only I know how much I suffered to do it.
You could say my daughter is my whole life!
Her disowning me is no different from killing me.
But to make me accept this bastard as my grandson...
I couldn't accept it!
Fists clenched, I told my daughter.
"I can go."
"But this bastard has to die today!"
The words were barely out before I caught Ryan off guard and snatched the child from his arms.
Then I ran out of the hotel like a madman.
"Dad! You've lost your mind!"
"Give the baby back!"
My daughter chased after me.
Ryan was frantic too.
He got the hotel front desk on the phone and reported me to them.
"My father-in-law's gone crazy and snatched my baby! He's even trying to kill him!"
"Please! Whatever you do, don't let him take the baby out of here!"
The hotel treated it like a full emergency, shutting the front doors at once to keep me from escaping.
They called security to close in and cut me off.
Seeing my daughter about to catch up behind me, I had no choice but to slip into the elevator and hit the button for the top floor.
Soon the elevator stopped at the stairwell on the top floor.
Still holding the baby, I stumbled through the door out to the rooftop.
I turned and locked it, shutting the pursuers out completely, and only then did I get a moment to hold the baby and catch my breath.
Three minutes later, my daughter and Ryan caught up.
They grabbed the door and found it wouldn't open, and, terrified I might harm the baby, they pounded on it and shouted from outside.
"Dad! Calm down, calm down!"
"You were by my side the whole time, from the pregnancy through every checkup. This baby is absolutely your own grandson!"
"To condemn a child over one absurd dream just doesn't hold up!"
Ryan cried and begged me too.
"Dad! The baby really is mine and Norma's! If you don't believe me, take him for a paternity test!"
"I know you don't like me. I can divorce Norma! I'm only begging you to spare Baby!"
But I just kept repeating the same thing to them.
"A dream sent by the ancestors is never wrong. An outside bloodline has entered the family. This child cannot be of Pruitt blood!"
"Sweetheart, don't be upset. Once I've dealt with this bastard, it will all be over!"
Holding the sleeping baby in my arms, I moved step by step toward the edge of the rooftop.
The wind whistled past my ears.
The livestream comments blew up.
What's this dead old man trying to do? He can't really be planning to kill the baby, can he?
Don't! We can testify the baby really is your daughter's!
If you don't believe it, go pull the hospital records, or just get a paternity test done!
Can't the ones above see it yet? This isn't him suspecting his son-in-law of cheating. He clearly hates that his grandson's birth stole the attention he used to get at home.
Even with a paternity test, he'd still kill the baby all the same!
I looked coldly at the comments in front of me.
They don't know a damn thing!
The Pruitts had an only son for three generations running. To hold a grandson sooner, I burned incense and prayed to the Buddha every single day.
After my daughter got pregnant, I cooked her something different and delicious every day, and I even rearranged Ryan's job for him.
All because I was afraid the baby wouldn't have a good life once he was born.
The gifts I'd prepared for him filled the entire nursery.
I looked forward to this child's arrival more than anyone.
That is exactly why I can't accept that someone swapped out my grandson for a bastard!
He deserves to die!
I lifted the baby high above my head, ready to let go.
The next second, the rooftop door was kicked open from the outside!
Then a swarm of police officers rushed in and pinned me to the ground.
The baby was handed back to Ryan by the police.
Holding the child he'd lost and gotten back, a grown man, he broke down crying right there.
But I cursed at the officer holding me down.
"Are you people insane?! I haven't committed any crime, so why are you arresting me?"
The officers were angrier than I was.
"Killing someone in broad daylight, and your own grandson at that, and you still say you're innocent?"
"If we hadn't gotten here in time, you'd have thrown this child off the roof!"
But I still stubbornly held my ground.
"He's not my grandson! He's a bastard!"
"Instead of looking for my grandson who was swapped, you're helping the crooks who swapped him bully an old man."
"Do you people have any conscience at all?"
The officers had a splitting headache from all my shouting.
My daughter stepped forward too and threw the rush-order paternity test in my face.
Pointing at the big words on it"99.999% genetic similarity, parent-child relationship confirmed"she stressed to me.
"Dad, look carefully. I paid to have the paternity test expedited, and this child is mine!"
"You wronged Ryan and almost killed your own grandson. I'm sending you to jail!"
But Ryan took her hand and said, all considerate.
"Let it go, honey. Dad didn't mean it. He just doesn't like me."
"Besides, nothing happened to the baby. As long as he promises never to hurt the child again, that's enough."
Even the relatives kept praising me for being so lucky to find such a good son-in-law.
"Brendan, just listen to Ryan. Apologize to him sincerely, write a written promise, and from now on you'll still be one family."
"Exactly! Where would you ever find such a good son-in-law? You almost killed his child, and he still keeps sticking up for you."
"Don't push your luck when someone's giving you a break, or I swear I'll have you put away! I'll make sure you spend the rest of your life in prison!"
"Still fantasizing that your son-in-law is cheating? I think it's because your wife's been dead all these years and you couldn't stand the loneliness, so you went out and fooled around."
"That's why you judge others by yourself, and figure Ryan's the same kind of scum as you!"
They cursed me to pieces, and the livestream comments were telling me to admit fault and apologize.
That's enough already. First time I've ever seen someone competing with his own son-in-law.
Just his son-in-law? He wouldn't even spare his own newborn grandson.
Hurry up and apologize, and hand over the gifts and the RV you prepared to your grandson, or this family really will fall apart!
His son-in-law even speaks up for himI'm dying, where can you find such a good son-in-law?
Only I kept my eyes locked on Ryan in front of me and said, one word at a time.
"You can fool everyone else, but you'll never fool me!"
"This child cannot possibly be my real grandson!"
And with that, ignoring Ryan's efforts to stop me, in front of everyone, I yanked away the swaddling that covered the baby's face.
The next second, everyone there clapped their hands over their mouths in shock!
