After ten years in a child-free marriage, I found the record of my husband accompanying my stepsister to her prenatal check-up.
I dug deeper and was horrified to discover it was my husband's baby.
Furious, I confronted him, demanding an explanation.
He replied dismissively, Chloe likes children, and I was just helping her out as a friend.
Tears streamed down my face as I stared at him, our argument exploding into a raging storm.
Friends and family urged me to relent, "Why make such a scene? It's a miracle Michael finally came around to having a child. The Smith Corporation will have an heir, and you'll both have someone to rely on."
"Michael is thirty-five now, and he never liked kids to begin with. Since Chloe can give the Smith family a legacy, you should be generous and welcome her. Why are you being so difficult?"
My heart broke as I looked at Michael's cold, detached expression. The person he truly loved was never me.
"I'm willing to accept the child, but you have to cut ties with Chloe Davis. That's my final offer."
Michael slid off his wedding ring and placed it on the coffee table.
"Chloe's had a tough pregnancy, and I can't just abandon her now."
He stared at me indifferently, not a hint of guilt in his eyes.
"If you keep causing drama, I'll move out. When you come to your senses, I'll come back."
I clenched my fists, letting go of any hope for reconciliation.
"In that case, let's get a divorce."
The room fell silent at my words, and even Michael paused as he reached for the door.
He looked surprised, but more than that, annoyed.
"Emily, stop making a scene."
I stood up, took off my own ring, and tossed it into the trash.
"Michael, I'm dead serious. Let's end this."
Michael's face darkened.
"Emily, you've always understood me all these years. Why can't you now?"
"Chloe wanted a healthy baby, and she begged me, crying and desperate. I didn't betray youit's just about responsibility now."
He described it so lightly, but each word felt like a sledgehammer to my heart.
So, all it takes to have a child is to cry and look pitiful?
What about all those years I endured gossip and ridicule? Was I just a fool?
Ten years ago, I married Michael Smith to save my grandmother, when he was confined to a wheelchair.
Back then, he just glared at me coldly, mocking me for marrying a cripple for money.
But how cold could he really be, if he'd lent a hand when my grandma was at her lowest?
After we married, he said he didn't want kids. Having witnessed enough pain and deceit in his family, he just wanted a simple, quiet life
I respected his wishes, devoted myself to caring for him, believing I could eventually win him over.
I studied acupuncture, accompanied him to the U.S. for surgery, and gave him daily massages and treatments.
For five whole years, I tended to him tirelessly, hoping to heal not just his body, but his spirit.
In the sixth year, when my finger joints were deformed from the effort, he trembled and stood on his own two feet.
He hugged me then, shedding tears for the first time, "Emily, thank you. You gave me a second chance at life. I'll love you properly from now on."
The whole Smith family celebrated, and Mrs. Smith held my hand, grateful. "Emily, you're our family's blessing. Out of all the patients, Michael noticed you and helped your grandma! He must have liked you from the start."
In that moment, I thought I'd finally melted the iceberg, that the clouds had parted to reveal the moon.
But the moon was always high in the sky, and I was just a fleeting mayfly.
I choked back the pain and asked, "Do you even know the difference between responsibility and love? Don't you think this is cruel to me?"
A flicker of guilt passed over Michael's face, and his voice softened.
"I'm sorry, Emily. I should have discussed it with you first. It won't happen again."
"Look, I've helped Chloe fulfill her wish. They won't bother you or threaten your position as Mrs. Smith. Why can't you let it go?"
I laughed bitterly.
"Michael, so she wants a child, and you help her? What about my wishes?"
I grabbed the dolls scattered around the room and threw them at him.
Countless nights, I'd held those dolls, dreaming of having a baby of my own.
I respected Michael's issues, I never pushed him for a child, and embraced the child-free life with him.
While I fantasized, he was already having a baby with someone else, helping her become a mother.
Michael fell silent, not defending himself, and just shooed the relatives away.
"Emily, I know you're angry. Take your time to accept it, but I can't abandon Chloe."
With that, he left.
I collapsed to the floor, tears streaming through my fingers.
True to his word, Michael didn't come back for days.
I watched Chloe's constantly updated Facebook feed: Michael shopping for baby supplies with her, posing by a fancy crib.
Michael started building the largest amusement park in Chicago for the unborn baby.
At the groundbreaking, they smiled for the camera, cutting the ribbon together.
Michael washed her feet, read bedtime stories to her belly...
With trembling hands, I tortured myself by consuming every post..
After the news broke, Mrs. Smith stopped pretending and no longer called me a blessing.
She visited Starlight Manor constantly, delivering salmon, fussing over her..
The three of them looked like a happy family, Chloe glowing with maternal warmth.
I couldn't help but comment on Chloe's post: "Stolen goods sure feel comfortable, huh?"
Mrs. Smith's voice message arrived instantly.
"What nonsense are you spouting on Chloe's page? Who's stealing?"
"I thought you had some use, getting Michael back on his feet, being able to take care of him. Turns out you're just as useless. He loves Chole now! Why are you still making a scene?"
"You have no appeal. Chole won his heart in three months after returning. How dare you act jealous?"
Then Michael called.
"Emily, when did you become so unreasonable? Delete that comment now. Chloe is upset and kicked us out. Apologize and say it was a typo."
Even though I'd cried myself dry, his angry words brought fresh tears.
I didn't understand how people could change so fast.
Mrs. Smith, who once treated me like a daughter, and my husband of ten years, were screaming at me.
When Michael stormed in, I was sobbing.
He grabbed my arm and snapped, "Chloe locked herself in her room, crying hysterically. Come apologize now."
I shook him off and glared coldly.
"If she's a thief, she shouldn't mind being called out. If she's scared, she shouldn't have done it."
He slapped me across the face, gripping my shoulders with a rage I'd never seen.
"Emily, I've spoiled you, made you arrogant and wild."
"Let me make it clear. I wanted this child. I begged Chloe for it because I love her and want a baby with her!"
His words cut off abruptly.
The air turned icy cold.
It felt like a thunderclap had exploded in my head. He loves her. He begged her for a child. He loves her...
Michael's expression shifted, and he pulled me into a hug.
"Alright, I was just angry and talking nonsense."
"Emily, if you behave, you'll always be Mrs. Smith. I'll never forget what you've done for me."
"Chloe's an elite returnee. She's giving us a baby with superior genes. You can be the godmother. Isn't that good?"
He rambled on, his scent of gardenia overwhelming, making me sick.
I pushed him away and rushed to the bathroom to vomit.
Michael handed me a towel, and after a while, I looked up with tear-filled eyes.
"Michael, if you love her and want a child with her, why drag me into this?"
"Why not divorce me? Do you enjoy stabbing me in the heart over and over?"
He saw my pain and looked guilty, but his phone rang.
"Michael, come quick! There's noise in Chloe's room! What if she fell?"
His face instantly paled with panic. All explanations forgotten, he grabbed me and dragged me out of the house. He ran six red lights on the way, his jaw clenched tight.
When we burst into the hall, Chloe was crying, and Michael's mother was comforting her.
Michael's mother shot me a look of pure disgust. "This bitch has nothing better to do than stir up trouble."
Chloe stood up, sobbing. "If everyone sees this child as shameful, I'll get an abortion."
"I won't let him be born under a curse."
She cried dramatically, standing tall.
Michael held her tenderly. "Chloe, he's my precious baby, a symbol of our love. I'll give him the best, and anyone who insults him will beg for your mercy."
"Don't cry, sweetheart, the baby will feel sad."
His words pierced my heart.
But what he said next froze me solid.
"Emily, slap yourself right now and apologize to Chloe. Swear you wanted this child and that if you ever harm him, your grandmother in heaven will suffer."
He pressed down on my shoulder and kicked the back of my knees, forcing me to the floor.
I stared in shock. He wanted me to bless the love child he had with his mistress.
He made me swear on my grandmother.
When I didn't move, he slammed my head against the floor repeatedly.
Blood poured from my forehead, blurring my vision.
Chloe looked down at me, smug and contemptuous.
Michael stopped and said coldly, "Emily, swear you'll treat this child well. Admit in public that you begged Chloe to have this baby for you. Then we can forget this ever happened."
I stared at him blankly. All my pain erupting. I grabbed a vase and threw it at him.
"Michael, you're disgusting!"
It missed him and hit Chloe, who collapsed into his arms, blood streaming.
"Michael, this time I protected you."
"Back then, I betrayed our love, but I had no choice. Thank you for still loving me."
Michael turned furious and kicked me squarely in the stomach, sending me flying two meters back.
"Emily, how dare you hurt Chloe!"
I laughed bitterly, curled on the floor, watching them fuss over Chloe. Pain shot through me, blood soaking my legs.
What a happy familytoo bad I wasn't part of it.
Michael rushed out with Chloe, not looking back.
I mustered my last strength to call someone.
"Professor... I accept the offer. The medical research post. I'll go, and I won't be coming back."
"Good, I'll send someone for you immediately."
As warmth spread, I passed out.
