Searing Doomsday: I Crush My Holier-Than-Thou Sister

During the heatwave apocalypse, I didn't die due to the heat, nor did I die in a conflict.

My younger sister, Amber Carter, has a heart of gold by nature. She couldn't bear to see the people suffering in the apocalypse, so she gave away all the food in our cellar.

After we ran out of food, Amber forced me to go look for food outside in the heat. That was how I diedfrom the heat outside.

In this lifetime, I'm going to enjoy my ice-cold watermelon while watching Amber dig her grave with her own hands.

Chapter 1

"Evelyn, don't you think you're being greedy?"

Dad sat at the dining table, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

"You got first place in the city on one exam, and now you want two percent of the company? Absolutely not."

I looked down at my unblemished skin, my mind wandering.

Dad kept going. "You're not getting any shares. Try being more like your sister for once. You're constantly causing me trouble."

I had just finished my SATs. Dad promised that if I got into the country's top college, he would grant me one request.

Everyone knew he favored my younger sister, Amber Carter. I wouldn't inherit the company or any of the family assets.

I needed to secure my own future, so I made my request while I had the chance. But the heatwave came, the world ended, and I never got what he promised.

Memories from my previous life flooded back. When the extreme temperatures hit and civilization collapsed, supplies became everything.

People would kill for a single slice of bread. Company shares meant nothing. When disaster struck, only food mattered.

A familiar voice snapped me back to the present. Amber set down her fork and gave me a disapproving look.

"Evelyn, you shouldn't ask Dad for shares," she said. "Money isn't important. Family is all that really matters. Besides, what would you even do with those shares? You'll get married eventually anyway."

Dad practically beamed at Amber's little speech.

Even Mom chimed in to support her. "Your sister's absolutely right. Why can't you be more like her? Show us some respect instead of constantly talking about shares and money. It's embarrassing. You don't act like you belong in this family at all."

I swallowed a bitter laugh. Mom had no idea that her devoted daughter would let rioters into our home when the world fell apart. That decision would cost her everything.

Mom also didn't know why I cared so much about money and shares. Growing up, she said the same thing over and over.

"Evelyn, sometimes I think we picked you up from a dumpster. You're nothing like the rest of us, especially Amber."

I never understood it. We were already wealthy beyond measure. Why did she need to say things like that?

The family fortune came from my childhood, when my parents made me donate my kidney to some rich businessman's son. I only wanted what I was owed.

Eventually, I overheard my parents talking when they thought I wasn't listening. That was when I finally understood that Mom never saw me as her daughter.

"We're all good people in this family. Amber takes after us perfectly. Evelyn's only missing one kidney, but she's held onto that resentment for years. She's completely ungrateful."

I suffered through 18 years of their favoritism. However, in their eyes, Amber could do no wrong.

I was used to it by now. I just wondered if they'd still be playing happy family in a month.

Chapter 2

My first priority was to stockpile supplies and build an apocalypse fortress. With that in mind, I lowered my head, letting my bangs hide my expression.

"If that won't work, then buy me a house in Crescent City and give me five million in cash. That's not unreasonable, is it?"

Dad looked confused. "Didn't I already buy a place near campus for Amber? You can just live there. Why do you need another house?"

"Evelyn! How can you be so greedy?" Amber glared at me, her voice sharp with anger. She grabbed my arm tightly, and her nails dug into my flesh.

I ignored the pain and kept my eyes on Dad. "Give me these things, and after that, I'll have nothing to do with the Carter family."

They wouldn't last more than a year and a half anyway. Shock flashed across Amber's face first, then a flicker of delight.

"Are you serious?"

She couldn't hide how thrilled she was. It was completely at odds with the saintly act she usually put on.

I merely gave a small nod.

Dad hesitated, but eventually Amber's encouragement won him over. He worked efficiently, as if afraid I'd change my mind.

The next day, he handed me a property deed with my name on it and a bank card, then looked at me meaningfully. "It's not too late to back out."

I looked back at him. At least he had some conscience left. But I knew that if he had to choose between Amber and me, he wouldn't hesitate to pick her.

In my previous life, I had called him the moment I collapsed from the heat. But all I got was his merciless cursing.

"It's scorching hot out there. You want me and Amber to come get you? Are you trying to kill us? You're so young, yet so manipulative. What a waste raising you all these years."

My heart shattered. In the second before death, I kept wondering why. We were twins. How could they be so cruel to me?

It turned out that some parents really didn't love their own children. This time around, I knew better than to expect anything from them. I grabbed the deed and booked the next flight to Crescent City.

They didn't understand why I wanted to buy property there, but in my previous life, this city was the only place on Earth untouched by the extreme heat.

I bought a two-story villa with 10,000 square feet of space. It came with an underground parking garage. When the apocalypse came, that garage would be the perfect natural shelter.

I filled the house with rice, pasta, and flour. To prevent the food from spoiling, I hired workers to refinish my villa to laboratory standards.

I also had the underground garage completely renovated, leaving only a small door with retinal recognition. Next, I went to the supermarket and bought tons of snacks and shelf-stable foods.

After the heatwave hit, I'd need to avoid heat injury, so I purchased a hundred large freezers, various cooling equipment, and solar generators. By the time everything was done, the entire villa had become a natural protective barrier.

The food inside would last me three full years. The sun would continuously power the solar generators, so I wouldn't have to worry about electricity at all.

I liked being alone. But to avoid boredom, I downloaded several thousand movies from the internet.

I also cleared a small plot of land inside the house. After the apocalypse came, this would be the only soil left that could support life.

By the time I finished, there were only three days left until the end of the world.

Chapter 3

I went back home to grab the last of my equipment. The moment I stepped through the door, Mom tore into me.

"Where have you been? You just turned 18 and you're already running wild. Why can't you be more like your sister?"

The three of them sat peacefully in the living room watching TV, but my arrival killed the atmosphere instantly. I was used to this kind of abuse by now.

The evening news showed the increasingly dire global situation. Several major countries were already experiencing extreme heat and drought. Dad frowned, his eyes glued to the screen.

Images of heat devastation scrolled across the TV. Amber's eyes immediately welled up.

"Dad, those poor people are suffering. We should donate more at this year's charity gala."

I couldn't help glancing at her when she said that. That one look seemed to flip a switch in her.

"Evelyn, I know you look down on the poor. But we need to have compassion. That's what Mom and Dad taught us growing up. Don't let your test scores make you forget where you came from. Character matters more than grades."

She made it sound so righteous, as if I were some kind of monster. All I did was glance at her.

Dad finally tore his eyes away from the TV. He was a businessman. He cared about profit, not compassion.

"Things are getting unstable out there. Both of you need to stay home."

His tone carried a warning, "Evelyn, if you keep running around and something happens, I won't be responsible. These are dangerous times. Everyone needs to be on high alert."

Dad really was a shrewd old fox. He'd already picked up on the tension building in the world. Too bad it was all too late.

The heatwave would arrive without warning. Even if he sensed something coming, there wasn't enough time to prepare.

I remembered in my previous life, when the extreme temperatures first struck, Dad was the first in the family to be affected.

And that moment would come tomorrow.

I'd spent the last two days trying to find an excuse to leave home. But Dad kept a tight watch on us. Neither Amber nor I could go anywhere.

My foolish sister still hadn't grasped how serious things were. After hearing Dad's warning last night, her mind began to turn.

It didn't matter that I couldn't leave. Amber would create an excuse for me.

The sun grew hotter each day. Even at night, the heat woke me up.

Amber had somehow managed to sneak out. Shortly after, Dad came banging on my bedroom door, looking frantic.

"Your sister might be in trouble out there. Come with me right now and help me find her."

In my previous life, I didn't listen to Dad. I refused to go with him, so Amber's plan failed. But this time, I brushed the cracker crumbs off my clothes and nodded at Dad.

"Okay."

In the early stages of the heatwave, looting had already broken out on the streets. A group of thugs held a knife to Amber's throat, and her face was streaked with tears.

"Dad, don't worry about me," she cried. "They said they'll let me go if Evelyn takes my place. But how could I trade her life for mine?"

Her clothes were torn and ragged. She looked fragile and helpless.

Dad clenched his fists. "Amber, don't be scared. I'll get you out of this."

Trash and debris littered the road. The scorching wind had already started blowing, and the air felt bone dry.

Amber trembled violently. Dad couldn't bear to watch anymore. After hesitating several times, he finally turned to me.

"Evelyn, make yourself useful for once."

The moment Dad spoke, triumph flashed across Amber's face. Even though I orchestrated this myself and already knew what choice he'd make, disappointment still crept into my heart.

I didn't say anything. I just walked silently toward the thugs.

Amber threw herself into Dad's arms. I watched their figures grow distant and let out a soft sigh. This would be the last time I saw them.

After they left, I handed the thugs some dry goods, then drove straight to Crescent City.
