I Sold My Fiancé for $5 Million

I am the long-lost biological daughter brought back to my wealthy family. The system in my head demanded I start a bloodbath.

My biological mother clung tightly to the fake daughter. Even though you are my own flesh and blood, Harper has been by our side for eighteen years. We simply cannot live without her.

[Hurry! Flip the table! Call them out for their blatant favoritism!]

I nodded. "That makes total sense. Eighteen years of emotional bonding versus eighteen years of shared DNA. I would choose the bond, too."

"Biology is just a statistical probability. Emotional attachment is a sunk cost."

My mother froze.

My fianc threw a check at my face. "Take the money and get lost. I do not love trailer trash."

[Quick! Tear the check to pieces! Tell him never to look down on the underdog!]

I neatly folded the check and tucked it away. "That makes total sense. You cannot force a toxic relationship, and this guy even provided severance pay. That is solid industry practice."

My fianc stared at me, completely dumbfounded.

[Host, I'm begging you. Act a little unhinged! The plot is completely stalled!]

I shrugged. "I am perfectly normal. You guys are just way too dramatic."

Chapter 1

My biological mother, Lorraine Sinclair, tightly gripped the girl who had occupied eighteen years of my life. Harper Sinclair.

Harper cried a river. Her shoulders hitched with every sob, making her look like she might actually stop breathing at any second.

Lorraine patted her back while shooting me an incredibly complicated look. "Clara, you are my real daughter, but Harper has been with us for eighteen years. We cannot just sever that kind of connection."

"We cannot lose her. I hope you can understand my position."

Standing nearby, Jonathan Sinclair let out a heavy sigh. He kept his hands behind his back and remained completely silent. It was a clear endorsement of his wife's stance.

The system in my head immediately exploded.

[Host! Are you seriously going to take this? Hurry! March up there and curse out those scumbags wait, no, yell some sense into these confused parents! Flip the coffee table! Tell them blood is thicker than water! You are the one and only true heir!]

The robotic voice gave me a massive headache.

I raised a hand and rubbed my temples. Under the tense gaze of the Sinclair trio, I gave a slow nod. "I understand. I completely understand."

Harper's sobbing abruptly stopped. Her tear-soaked lashes fluttered. She clearly had not anticipated this reaction.

Lorraine looked completely stunned. "You you do not blame me?"

I walked over to a single armchair and sat down. I leaned back, entirely relaxed, treating the situation like a briefing with a corporate client over a low-priority project. "It is perfectly normal. Eighteen years of feelings stacked against eighteen years of bloodline."

"I would choose the feelings, too. Genetics is just a biological probability. Emotions are actual sunk costs."

I pointed at the haute couture dress clinging to Harper's frame, then gestured to my own cheap thrift-store clothes. "You have invested eighteen years of money, time, and energy into her. It is like raising a premium gaming account."

"Now you are suddenly told to ditch it and grind a brand new level-one avatar from scratch. Anyone would be reluctant. It is basic economics. I get it."

Dead silence fell over the living room.

Lorraine looked like she had just swallowed a live fly. She opened her mouth to explain herself, but my flawless logic completely suffocated her words.

Chapter 2

The system had a total meltdown in my head.

[Host, what kind of garbage are you spouting! You need to fight for their love! You need to put her in her place!]

I ignored the robotic voice. I looked at Harper with absolute sincerity. "Keep crying. Do not mind me."

"I am just a newly onboarded intern trying to get the hang of the corporate oh, wait, the family environment."

Harper was clearly a top-tier, professional manipulator. After a brief moment of shock, she pivoted her strategy. She pulled away from Lorraine's embrace. She walked up to me with red-rimmed eyes and timidly extended a hand.

"Clara, I am so sorry. This is all my fault. I stole your place. If my presence upsets you, I can move out."

The system roared to life again.

[This is your chance! Call out that toxic pick-me! Tell her to get lost!]

I stared at Harper's meticulously manicured hand. I did not take it. Instead, I dug a pack of wet wipes out of my bag and handed it to her.

"Do not say that. The title of this house belongs to Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair. Legally speaking, we are both just temporary dependents crashing here."

I paused. I continued in the objective tone of someone discussing a purely academic thesis. "Besides, where would you even go? You have no real estate under your name and zero independent survival skills."

"If you rent an apartment, the brokers will rip you off. Living in a hotel is way too expensive. As a rational human being, freeloading here is the choice that maximizes your profit margins."

"If I were you, I would refuse to leave, too."

Harper's outstretched hand froze mid-air.

She had prepared an entire script of passive-aggressive lines. My brutal honesty choked them right back down her throat. Her whole tragic performance of sacrificing everything for love instantly devolved into the grim reality of simply needing a place to crash.

Jonathan finally reached his limit. He furrowed his brows. "Clara, watch your tone. Harper is your sister."

"What do you mean by freeloading? This is her home, too."

I nodded immediately. I was as compliant as a model employee receiving a direct order from the CEO. "Understood, Mr. Sinclair. I will make a note that Ms. Harper holds permanent residency rights."

"So, where is my cubicle I mean, my bedroom?"

The sheer distance in my "Mr. Sinclair" visibly stung Jonathan. His face darkened. "Have the butler take you to the guest room."

The butler was a man in his fifties. His gaze carried a distinct trace of disdain. The social hierarchy in this house was painfully obvious. He led me to a room at the very end of the second-floor hallway.

"Miss, space is a bit tight right now. Harper has a lot of belongings and currently occupies two rooms. You will have to make do with this one for the time being."

The room faced north and got zero sunlight. The window was tiny. It held nothing but a bed and a wardrobe, completely lacking even a decent desk.

In stark contrast, I had walked past Harper's bedroom earlier. I saw the massive walk-in closet, the sprawling balcony, and the matching aesthetic furniture.

The system buzzed with digital rage.

[This is outrageous! Is this a maid's quarters? Host, go smash Harper's room to pieces! Take back what belongs to you!]

I scanned the cramped space. I nodded in pure satisfaction.

Chapter 3

"It is great. Poor lighting is perfect for sleeping. The compact space saves on the electricity bill. Plus, it is far from the stairs, so it is quiet."

The butler's carefully prepared script of mockery landed like a punch in a pile of cotton. He stared at me in sheer disbelief. "Miss, you are not angry?"

I set down my duffel bag and pulled out my laptop. "Why would I be angry? I am a nepotism hire dropping into a new company I mean, coming home."

"I have zero track record and zero seniority. Getting a private office at all is a win. Did you really expect me to demand the corner suite on day one?"

I looked at the butler with utter sincerity. "By the way, what is the Wi-Fi password? Is the bandwidth decent? I have to work overtime tonight."

The butler opened his mouth, choked out a string of numbers, and slinked away.

I shut the door.

The system was still relentless.

[Are you stupid? They are humiliating you!]

I booted up my laptop, connected to the network, and pulled up the stock market indices. "System, you are way too emotional. Does humiliation physically harm me? No."

"But if I throw a tantrum and break something, I have to pay for it. I currently have exactly two hundred dollars to my name. I cannot afford the liability."

Dinner time rolled around. The atmosphere at the dining table was toxic enough to cause severe indigestion.

Lorraine Sinclair put on a grand display of maternal love. She constantly served Harper Sinclair, peeling shrimp for her. "Harper, you look like you lost weight. Eat more of this."

Harper shot me a provocative look. Her voice dripped with artificial sweetness. "Thank you, Mom. You are the absolute best."

Jonathan Sinclair chimed in, occasionally ladling more seafood bisque into Harper's bowl. The family of three radiated absolute bliss. I was just a stranger awkwardly sharing their table.

The system glitched.

[Flip the table! Now! Throw the soup right in Harper's face!]

I kept my head down and ate my steak. I moved fast but maintained perfect table manners. Years of corporate grinding had trained me to finish a meal in five minutes flat. Lunch breaks were a luxury.

Lorraine seemed to finally locate a shred of conscience. She placed a piece of short rib on my plate. "Clara Sage, eat some protein. Do not just eat the sides."

That specific piece of short rib was covered in the green bell peppers that Harper absolutely despised. I stared at the meat. I did not touch it.

Harper immediately jumped in. "Does my sister dislike Mom's cooking? Clara, you probably never got to eat wagyu short ribs back in the trailer park, right?"

I placed my silverware down. I dabbed my mouth with a linen napkin. "I do not dislike it. I am simply full."

I stood up and gave Jonathan and Lorraine a polite, professional nod. "Thank you for the hospitality. The meal was satisfactory. If there are no further instructions, I will return to my room to process my workload."

Jonathan froze. "Work? You just got home. Are you not going to sit and chat with us?"

I glanced at the grandfather clock against the wall. "It is seven-thirty in the evening. This is strictly off-the-clock personal time. Furthermore, you guys are clearly enjoying your team-building."

"Me inserting myself into the conversation would completely derail the vibe. As a new hire as a newcomer, I need to read the room."

I finished my statement, turned on my heel, and walked away. I left three utterly bewildered faces staring at my back.

Faintly, I heard Lorraine complain. "Why does this child act like a literal robot? She has zero human warmth."

The corner of my lips ticked up, for they had no idea what my ruthless efficiency would cost them tomorrow.

Chapter 4

Human warmth? That requires actual humans. In their eyes, I was nothing but a biologically linked home invader. Expecting warmth was an absolute luxury.

Negotiating rules was far more efficient.

Early the next morning, an uninvited guest arrived at the Sinclair estate. Tristan Kensington. Harper Sinclair's fianc. The man who technically, originally, belonged to me.

The guy certainly looked the part of a billionaire heir. Bespoke tailored suit, meticulously styled hair. It was just a shame he was clinically blind when it came to reading a room.

He walked in just as I was heading out for "work"which actually meant going to the public library to exploit their free air conditioning and save on electricity.

Without a single word, Tristan reached into his designer jacket, pulled out a check, and tossed it at my chest. It fluttered to the hardwood floor. "Five million. Take the money and get lost."

"I don't love trailer trash."

Tristan looked down his nose at me, his tone dripping with arrogant alpha-male energy. By the staircase, Harper covered her mouth, stifling a soft smirk.

The system was so agitated its digital voice practically cracked.

[Tear the check! Hurry! Throw it right back in his face! Tell him never to look down on the underdog! Tell him the tables always turn!]

I bent down and picked up the piece of paper. I meticulously verified the string of zeroes, the signature, and the bank watermark. It was legit. Then, I pulled a small notepad and a pen from my tote bag.

"Hold on a second, Mr. Kensington."

I scribbled a few lines, tore the sheet off, and handed it directly to him. Tristan reflexively took it. He glanced down, and his entire body went rigid. "What is this?"

"A receipt." I flashed a perfectly trained corporate smile. "Since you have issued the severance pay, we need to follow standard procedure to avoid any future financial disputes."

"It clearly states that I have received five million dollars from Mr. Tristan Kensington, and I voluntarily forfeit the engagement. Transaction complete. No refunds or exchanges."

Tristan stared at me like I was a literal mutant. "You you are just taking it?"

"What else would I do?" I carefully tucked the check into my notebook. "It makes perfect sense. You cannot force a bad merger, and this broken deal comes with a five-million-dollar golden parachute."

"That is peak industry standard. You are an incredibly generous client, Mr. Kensington. Do you need me to draft a thank-you letter and send it to your corporate headquarters?"

"Or I could post a PR statement on Instagram clarifying that I was simply out of your league?"

Tristan's face instantly flushed the color of bruised plum. Every single degrading insult he had pre-loaded in his brain hit a massive firewall named 'receipt'.

With five million dollars backing me, my posture instantly improved.

However, I did not go on a chaotic shopping spree like the system begged me to. Instead, I immediately dumped the funds into a few high-yield tech stocks I had my eye on.

When I returned to the estate that evening, the atmosphere was even heavier than the day before.

Jonathan and Lorraine Sinclair sat firmly on the living room sofa. Harper sat off to the side, dabbing at her tears.

The second I walked in, Jonathan slammed his hand onto the coffee table. "Clara Sage! Do you have absolutely no shame? How dare you take Tristan's money!"

Harper whimpered softly. "Clara, did you only come back for the money? If you were struggling that much, I could have given you my allowance. Why would you insult Tristan's feelings for me like that?"

The system screamed in my head.

[Yell back! Call out their toxic double standards!]

Chapter 5

I changed into my slippers and walked to the center of the living room. I pulled a custom acrylic plaque out of my bag. I had specifically ordered it with rush shipping this afternoon. Gold lettering on a sleek black background read:

[Thank You for Fulfilling My Filial Duties. Wishing You a Lifetime of Marital Bliss.]

I solemnly handed the plaque to Harper Sinclair. "Sister, I am taking this money with a completely clear conscience. Think about it. This engagement originally belonged to me."

"Now it is yours. Consider this five million as a transfer fee for signing over my fianc. These days, you have to pay a premium just to take over a commercial lease."

"Let alone acquiring a high-yield prime asset like Mr. Kensington."

Harper stared at the acrylic plaque. She did not know whether to take it or drop it. Her face turned a sickly shade of green.

Jonathan Sinclair's hands shook with sheer rage. "You you are treating marriage like a transaction?"

"Marriage is fundamentally an economic contract." I kept my expression perfectly serious. "Since the young Mr. Kensington is willing to pay a premium for true love, I am simply facilitating the deal. If I refused the money, would that not make his true love seem incredibly cheap?"

I looked at Harper with an encouraging gaze. "Sister, your romance is valued at exactly five million dollars. You should be thrilled."

Harper let out a loud wail and ran up the stairs crying.

Lorraine Sinclair pointed a trembling finger at me. "You you are going to be the death of me!"

I blinked innocently. "Mom, I am just protecting my sister's market value."

Perhaps to compensate for Harper's traumatized psyche, Lorraine decided to take us shopping at the high-end boutique mall that weekend. Ostensibly, it was to buy clothes for me. In reality, the second we stepped inside, Lorraine dragged Harper straight toward the designer labels.

"Harper, this dress suits you perfectly. Go try it on. Harper, this handbag is from the new season. It would look stunning on you."

I trailed behind them like a glorified personal assistant holding the shopping bags.

The system buzzed.

[Host, snatch the black card! Max out their credit limit! Show them who the real biological daughter is!]

I calmly watched Lorraine swipe her card. My heart rate remained completely flat.

When Harper tried on a pale yellow sundress, I even took the initiative to step forward. "That color is too bright. It washes you out."

"I highly recommend swapping it for that dusty blue one. It complements your skin tone and cinches the waist better."

Harper glared at me with deep suspicion. "Why would you be so helpful?"

"I am doing this for the Sinclair family image." I kept a straight face. "You are the public face of this household. If you dress poorly, it damages the Sinclair reputation."

"As a member of this family, I have a fiduciary duty to maintain our brand identity."

Harper suspiciously changed into the dusty blue dress. Sure enough, the result was stunning.

Even the sales associate praised me. "This young lady has a fantastic eye for fashion."

Lorraine looked at how beautiful Harper looked. Her original plan to ice me out suddenly morphed into a tiny prick of guilt. She picked up a T-shirt from the clearance rack and handed it to me. "Clara Sage, go try this one on."

It was a severely out-of-season garment. The fabric was even starting to pill.

The system screeched.

[Throw it on the ground! Stomp on it!]

I took the shirt and inspected the tag. "No need to try it on. It has a high cotton blend. It is highly breathable and absorbs sweat, which makes it optimal for doing chores around the house."

"Thank you, Mom. I really appreciate it."

Not only was I not angry, but I also offered genuine gratitude.

Lorraine's hand froze in mid-air. The expression on her face was an absolute masterpiece.

Chapter 6

Guilt is like a coiled spring. The more you push back against it, the more the other person feels their actions are justified. The more accommodating you are, the more they feel like absolute monsters.

Right now, Lorraine Sinclair clearly felt like a monster.

Back at the estate, Harper Sinclair was obviously furious that I had stolen her spotlight today. Even though I hardly considered buying a clearance rack shirt a spotlight.

She stood in the living room and deliberately snapped Lorraine's favorite pearl necklace. Pearls scattered across the hardwood floor.

Then she let out a piercing scream. "Clara! How could you push me!"

I was standing at least six feet away, quietly sipping a glass of water.

Lorraine and Jonathan Sinclair rushed in. They took in the chaotic scene and a violently sobbing Harper.

Harper pointed a trembling finger at me. "Clara said she was jealous that Mom bought me things. She shoved me and ripped the necklace."

This entry-level framing attempt was a direct insult to my intelligence.

Jonathan glared at me. "Clara Sage! You are a massive disappointment!"

The system glitched in a digital panic.

[Explain! Hurry up and explain! Tell them you have an alibi!]

I set down my water glass. I let out a heavy sigh. Then I pulled out my phone and dialed 911. "Hello, 911?"

"I would like to report a crime. There has been an incident of intentional property damage. The financial value involved is substantial. Please dispatch officers to the scene."

The entire family froze
