At the party, my husband's best buddy loudly asked him,
Your little secretary is pregnant with your child. What are you going to do about it?
Ethan placed a peeled shrimp on my plate and whispered softly,
I'll give her everything except marriage. But she and the baby are never to appear in Sophia's presense.
" Sophia is the backbone of the company's entire R&D department. If she finds out I betrayed her, she'll leave me for sure."
"Both me and the company can't afford to lose Sophia."
After that, he signed that he'd always love me.
But he didn't notice my red-rimmed eyes.
He had no idea I came today to surprise him, to tell him my hearing was finally restored.
But I never expected he'd give me a surprise , too.
I lost my hearing for him. I abandoned my dreams for him.
And in return, I got betrayal.
But hey, he knew me well.
If I found out he cheated, I would absolutely leave him.
"Sophia, what's wrong?"
At Ethan's panicked voice, the whole private room fell dead silent.
Everyone stared at me in horror.
When I spat out a bloody shrimp with tears streaming down, Ethan and the others all sighed in relief.
"Thank God Sophia's still deaf, or we'd be in deep shit."
"Hope she stays deaf forever, so Ethan can keep her under his thumb."
"Even if she could hear, so what? She's just a doormat. Ethan just needs to give her a little treat, and she'll fall in line."
The room full of people insulted and cursed me.
But my husband, the man I loved deeply, just pretended to check the cut in my mouth with concern.
No argument, not even a frown.
After confirming I was okay, Ethan relaxed and signed to me,
"I'll take you to the hospital now. Don't eat so fast next time. If you like shrimp, I'll peel them for you every day."
If this were back when I couldn't hear, Ethan's act would've had me sobbing with gratitude.
But now, I just felt heartache, too stunned to speak.
Ethan started to gather our things to leave, but his buddies stopped him.
"Ethan, hang tight. We've got a special show for you tonight."
"Nothing's more important than taking Sophia to the doctor. You guys have fun."
"Don't leave, man! You're the guest of honor today."
Ethan ignored them, helped me into my coat, grabbed my purse, and led me out.
I felt like a puppet, letting him maneuver me.
But when he opened the door, Ethan froze.
Isabella stood there in a red dress, blocking our path.
Seeing her all dolled up, Ethan's face darkened. He shielded me and snapped,
"I warned you never to a[[ear in front of Sophia! What the hell are you doing?!"
Isabella glanced at me, then lowered her eyes submissively.
"I thought it was time I met her properly."
"Now that I'm pregnant, I don't want any status. I just want to offer Sophia a toast. Consider it just asking for the role of mistress. Surely that's fine, right?"
The room went quiet, everyone watching like it was prime-time drama.
Ethan finally realized this was the "show" they meant.
Isabella was putting on a performance of wife-mistress harmony in front of his friends.
"Sophia hasn't touched alcohol in three years. She won't drink with you."
Ethan instinctively tried to refuse.
Back when we were pushing for the company's IPO, I worked day and night, my schedule was chaotic, and I ate irregularly. Within a few years, I was hospitalized multiple times for liver and stomach issues.
The doctor strictly forbade me from drinking any alcohol.
For years, Ethan always shut down anyone who tried to offer me a drink.
But this time, he hesitated.
He turned to me and signed,
