My Husband Was Only Allergic to the Peaches I Gave Him, So I got divorced
My husband was allergic to peaches. He couldn't touch even a drink with the faintest trace of peach juice in it.
Five years married, and I'd watched every bite and sip that went into his mouth.
Until my husband landed a ten-million-dollar contract for his company.
At the celebration dinner, he actually drank, in front of everyone, the peach juice his little childhood sweetheart had poured for him.
I wasn't surprised. I just turned and held out a set of divorce papers.
Every employee in the room jumped in to accuse me of throwing a fit over nothing!
Leo Harding, humiliated into a rage, tore the papers to shreds and flung them in my face.
"June Walker just didn't want me feeling sick from the wine. She poured me a glass of juice to sober me up, that's all!"
"Besides, if it weren't for June's help this time, I never would've closed a deal that big. There's a limit to how jealous you get to be!"
I lifted my hand and brushed the scraps off my face, then turned and took out my phone.
"You can go ahead and cancel the partnership."
The second I hung up, the whole crowd couldn't hold back their jeers.
"Honey, you've been watching too many soap operas! Now you're putting on a little melodrama right here!"
"If June hadn't connected us this time, our company never could've signed a deal that size with Skyline Group. You want to throw a jealous fit, at least read the room!"
Leo stared at me, his face gone gray.
"Because June poured me a glass of juice, you're kicking up a fuss about divorce? Have you lost your mind?"
"Everything I do at work is for you, for this family. Fine, you don't appreciate how hard I work. But you'd end our marriage over one glass of juice?"
Leo's little speech had every friend and relative in the room seething on his behalf.
"Leo's famous for how much he loves his wife. All these years, afraid you'd get jealous, he only hired women who were already married with kids."
"Leo drinks himself to a bleeding stomach at business dinners, for you, for this family. You're his wife and you can't even show him a little understanding? And now you throw out divorce over a glass of juice? You don't know when you've got it good!"
Leo had always been everyone's idea of the perfect husband.
Five years in, and he still bent to my every whim.
Even when I couldn't get pregnant after the wedding, when his family came at me with blame, he'd put himself between them and me and tell them all that he was the one who couldn't have children, that it had nothing to do with me.
And yet this perfect husband was the very man who'd turned my life into a joke.
Leo's assistant, June, came forward too, all wounded innocence, and grabbed my hand.
"Millicent Henson, I've been married with a kid for ages now. How can you still be jealous of me?"
"I was only worried Leo would upset his stomach from drinking too much, so I wanted him to have some juice to sober up. If you don't like it, then I just won't pour for him anymore!"
June and Leo were childhood sweethearts, always calling each other like brother and sister.
When he and I first got together, I minded how close the two of them were, too.
But then June rushed into marriage and motherhood, and that finally put the thorn in my chest to rest.
I flung her hand off, my face cold.
"Once we're divorced, you can feed him juice every day of the week for all I care."
Hearing that, Leo's expression turned uglier still.
"Millicent, are you done? All this over a glass of juice, really?"
"Today is the celebration for me and June, not some stage for a housewife like you to throw a tantrum!"
My expression didn't change. My voice stayed ice-cold.
"Yes, really."
Hearing me, June stepped in at once and deliberately dropped her voice.
"Honey, I know Leo's always busy with work, and you get lonely at home all by yourself. But no pretty young thing out there is ever going to be as good as Leo! He started his own company so young, and now he's landed a ten-million-dollar deal with Skyline Group. There's no limit to how far he'll go!"
June clapped a hand over her mouth the instant the words were out.
"Millie, oh no, did I just say something I shouldn't have?"
Then she pulled out her phone, opened the photo album, and held up for everyone to see a picture of me sitting inside a Maybach.
"Millie, I really only saw it by accident that day. I swear I didn't mean to bring it up! You won't hold it against me, will you?"
June's little performance turned every gaze in the room on me at once, appraising and full of contempt.
"What? Millicent actually cheated? No wonder she was screaming for a divorce over one glass of juice. The nerve of her!"
"I kept wondering how she could bear to leave a man as good as Leo. Turns out she already had someone else lined up on the side!"
Leo's face darkened at once. He jabbed a finger at the man in the photo and demanded, "Who is that pretty boy? Is he the reason you want to divorce me?"
I had no interest in wasting more words on any of them. I forwarded the appointment confirmation for the divorce straight to Leo's phone.
"Ten o'clock tomorrow morning. I'll see you at the county clerk's office!"
With that, I turned to go.
Leo lunged forward to block my way, his eyes brimming with earnest pleading.
"Baby, I know I've been buried in work and neglected you. I don't blame you!"
"Just cut things off with that man, and I promise you, I'll act like none of it ever happened. All you have to do is come back to me!"
His words melted the whole room in an instant.
"Millicent, if you've got even a shred of conscience, you should know you're in the wrong! Don't wreck a marriage over some stray man!"
I shook Leo's hand off with icy indifference.
"This divorce is happening. That's final!"
His eyes flickered with a jolt. He hadn't expected me to actually mean it.
"Baby, tell me. What exactly will it take for you not to divorce me?"
Watching that hypocrite's face, I forced down the nausea churning in my stomach, turned, and poured ten cups of peach juice.
"You love peach juice, don't you? Well, drink your fill right now!"
Leo stared at the row of peach juice in front of him, and his face went dark.
"Millicent, you know perfectly well I'm allergic to peaches. One sip could kill me. You're trying to drive me to my death!"
I raised an eyebrow and let out a cold snort.
"Then why did you drink the peach juice June poured you a moment ago and come away perfectly fine?"
"Or was the cup you drank never peach juice at all?"
Hearing that, the guests turned toward Leo, one after another, puzzled.
"That's right! I remember Mr. Harding's peach allergy is severe. Once when we all went out to eat, the kitchen squeezed a bit of peach juice into a dish for flavor, and Mr. Harding took one bite and swelled up all over. He nearly died!"
"So why was Mr. Harding fine after drinking June's peach juice? I saw him finish the whole glass just now!"
Hearing the murmurs spread, Leo flew into a humiliated rage and swept the whole row of peach juice off the table.
"Millicent, when did you become so utterly impossible?"
"You want a divorce, fine! Let's see how you manage to survive once you've left me!"
Gabriel Glass shattered across the floor.
I looked at the sticky peach juice pooling on the ground, and a sting rose behind my eyes.
Leo was certain that I, a caged bird he'd kept for five years, would never actually dare to leave him.
The others chimed in to talk me down.
"You're a housewife. If you really leave Mr. Harding, how are you going to live?"
"Exactly! You've been out of the workforce so long. What company would ever take on an older woman with no job experience?"
I stayed unmoved all the same, and looked at Leo.
"Tomorrow. The county clerk's office. I'll see you there!"
Leo's face went ashen in an instant.
"Fine! Divorce is what you want, isn't it? Let's see how you survive once you leave me."
"You've lived off me for five years. I'm freezing your cards right now. From here on out, you can fend for yourself!"
With that, Leo pulled out his phone and made a call, freezing every card in my name.
I didn't bother with him. I turned on my heel and headed for the door.
But the moment I reached it, a waiter stopped me.
"Ma'am, you poured out ten juices earlier and haven't settled the bill. Will that be cash or card?"
I looked at the card reader in his hand, and it clicked into place.
Leo watched me with a sneer.
"Weren't you so tough a second ago? Since you're set on divorcing me, don't count on spending a single cent of mine. You poured that juice yourself, so you can pay for it yourself!"
He'd frozen my cards, certain I couldn't produce the money, so he'd landed on this way to force me to back down in front of everyone.
June looked at me with a mocking smile of her own.
"Ms. Henson, the juice at a place like this runs two-eighty a glass. You poured out ten, so that's two thousand eight hundred. You don't have a cent on you right now, do you?"
"Looks like you'll just have to wash dishes in the back to work it off!"
I clenched my fists so tight my nails bit into my palms.
"Juice at two-eighty a glass still beats that free peach of yours!"
Something seemed to occur to June, and her expression turned cold as she looked at me.
"Ms. Henson, you'd better apologize to Leo right now. A man as good as him doesn't come around twice!"
I let out a cold huff.
"You like trash. I don't!"
At my words, Leo's face darkened at once, and he turned to the waiter.
"Take her to wash the dishes."
"Millicent, I'll be waiting for the day you regret this!"
I looked at him and gave a soft laugh.
"Then you'll be waiting a long time!"
Because the one who was going to regret it was him.
By the time I came out of the kitchen, my hands were nearly raw from the water.
I stumbled out of the hotel on unsteady feet, and just as I was about to leave, I saw Leo's driver walking toward me.
He looked at me with a jeering smirk.
"Millicent, Mr. Harding says since the two of you are getting divorced, everything you're wearing was bought by him. Take it off and give it back to him now!"
I lifted my eyes to the driver in disbelief, teeth clenched hard.
Leo knew perfectly well I'd worn nothing but a black evening gown today, and he actually wanted me to strip in public.
He was dead set on putting me in my place.
Seeing that I didn't react, the driver smirked at me.
"A housewife who lives off a man, and she's dumb enough to want a divorce over one glass of juice. Now you know how hard life gets once you leave the man, don't you?"
I ignored his taunts, gritted my teeth, and reached back to pull down the gown's zipper.
The moment he saw it, the driver opened his phone and started a livestream, aiming the camera straight at me.
"Everybody, come look at this! This woman is throwing a fit to divorce her husband, all because he drank one glass of juice. What a drama queen!"
The viewer count in the stream shot up the instant he spoke, and the netizens behind the comments piled on with their mockery.
"Demanding a divorce over one glass of juice, that's got to be the first in all of history!"
"Really thinks she's a princess, like the whole world owes her, and now the man's done waiting on her."
"Stripping in public? How is that any different from a stripper?"
I clenched my teeth and peeled the dress off my body, inch by inch.
Thankfully I was wearing a slip underneath, so I wasn't left fully exposed on camera.
Only after I'd stepped out of the gown did Leo climb slowly out of the car.
He hurried to pull off his own coat and draped it over my shoulders.
"Sweetheart, no matter what happens, you're still my wife. The moment you want to come back, I'll be right here waiting for you."
I lifted my eyes to that hypocritical face of his and threw the gown straight at it.
"Leo, you truly disgust me."
With that, I walked away.
I hadn't gotten far when a Mercedes came speeding up behind me and pulled to a smooth stop at my side.
Leo and June sat in the back, watching me with cold faces.
"Millicent, just apologize to me and June right now, and I promise to let bygones be bygones and take you back!"
June chimed in right after.
"Leo's already landed the ten-million-dollar order from Skyline Group. His net worth is about to multiply several times over. Soon you won't even be good enough to reach for him."
I looked at Leo and let out a mocking laugh.
"Leo, if I remember correctly, you haven't actually signed the contract with Skyline Group yet, have you?"
"I hope you can still manage a smile tomorrow."
That one line turned his face ashen. He glared at me, malice in his eyes.
"Millicent, since you don't know what's good for you, don't blame me for tossing aside whatever's left between us as husband and wife!"
"You want a divorce? Fine, we'll settle it in court. You can look forward to walking away with nothing!"
With that, he hit the gas and the Mercedes tore off.
The moment Leo was gone, I walked straight to the Maybach parked under the streetlight.
The instant I got in, my assistant handed me a tablet.
I opened the surveillance footage on it right away.
In the nursing room across from the banquet hall, June was straddling Leo, her clothes hiked all the way up.
"Leo, does your peach taste good?"
Watching the footage, I couldn't hold back the churning in my stomach any longer. I grabbed the trash can and threw up.
My assistant looked at me, his expression grave.
"Ms. Henson, I've had marketing cancel the signing with Leo's company. Once they get the news tomorrow morning, they'll surely come rushing to Skyline Group."
My gaze darkened.
"I'll be waiting at Skyline for them to come begging me."
Back then, Leo had won me over with what seemed like real devotion. For the sake of his male pride, I gave up everything and became the woman standing behind him.
I even poured all my connections and resources into paving the way for him, and what I got in return was betrayal.
That night I returned to my own estate, worth hundreds of millions.
I'd barely settled in to rest when my phone rang.
It was my assistant.
"Ms. Henson, something's happened!"
"Leo not only livestreamed everything from tonight across the internet, he maliciously edited the video too. He's claiming you have no shame or decency, that you stripped in public to seduce a man!"
My heart sank, and I quickly pulled up the latest news.
There was my name, sitting high on the trending list.
Click into any random link and you could see the video of me undressing in front of the driver.
Leo had even had someone secretly photograph me getting into my assistant's car, and now the whole internet was calling me a slut.
"A woman like this is just trash. Out on the street she'll throw herself at any man she sees!"
"You could see how much she enjoyed it in the livestream. That look on her face said everything. She's cheap to the bone!"
"A woman like this probably cheated on Leo ages ago. And to think he loved her so much. All that devotion, wasted on a dog!"
I was about to shut off my phone when countless messages suddenly came flooding in.
Millicent, marrying you was the worst luck Leo will ever have in eight lifetimes.
Millicent, you shameless slut, are you so desperate for a man you've lost your mind? Stripping in public like some cheap whore!
I stared at message after message of abuse, and it didn't take long to realize my personal information had been sold off.
Leo would stop at nothing to back me into a corner!
I pulled the SIM card out of my phone right then.
Leo moved fast.
By the next day I'd received a court summons and a formal complaint from his lawyer.
I tossed the complaint straight into the trash and headed to Skyline Group.
I'd barely started toward the building when a familiar, mocking laugh came from behind me.
Millicent, honey, the whole internet's calling you the town bicycle now, and you still have the nerve to show your face? Honestly, I'm so impressed!
I turned around to find June's smug little face.
Leo stood beside her, his expression sour!
What are you doing here? You think Skyline Group is somewhere people like you can just walk into?
Before I could answer, June jumped in first.
Millicent must be here looking for a job! Finally figuring out how hard life is without Leo, aren't you!
With your qualifications, forget being a receptionist at Skyline. I doubt anyone would even take you on as a cleaning lady. You really should stop coming out to embarrass yourself!
You'd better hurry up and apologize to Leo, then go back to being a housewife where you belong!
Hearing June, Leo's face darkened, and he looked at me coldly.
A housewife like you wants to get into Skyline Group? You really have no idea where you stand.
If you apologize to me right now, I might just be willing to let you keep being Mrs. Harding!
I looked at him and let out a cold laugh.
That title of Mrs. Harding, why don't you hand it over to your little childhood sweetheart!
Leo's face darkened.
Millicent, I'll be waiting for the day you kneel on the floor and beg me!
With that, he wrapped an arm around June and strode inside.
I watched his back, my expression going a shade colder.
The moment Leo went in, my assistant came hurrying out to meet me.
Ms. Henson, Leo and the others have arrived. They're begging to see you right now!
I looked at him, my expression cooling.
Send them up to my office. And prepare ten glasses of peach juice!
Leo pushed open the office door with an eager, fawning look, his eyes full of flattery.
Ms. Henson, about you canceling the partnership with our company, I'd like to talk it over with you again!
As the words left his mouth, his eyes landed on me sitting behind the desk, and he froze on the spot.
I looked at him with a soft laugh and gestured to the ten glasses of peach juice in front of me.
As for the partnership, we can talk about it once you've finished all ten glasses of peach juice!
Leo's eyes went wide, terror written all over them!
How are you in the office of Skyline Group's CEO?
