Daughter Cast Out, I Reborn in Comatose Mother-in-Law Killing Wildly
I worked in the underworld for five years and finally earned one chance to go up to the human world and visit my daughter.
Who could have guessed that my precious daughter, born with asthma, was so hungry she couldn't even afford a single dinner roll!
And all because his second wife and her stepdaughter had gone and found some so-called guru.
They claimed my daughter would jinx my husband's wealth and shorten his lifespan.
So my husband threw his own penniless daughter out of the house.
I was so furious the lid of my coffin couldn't hold me down.
I turned right around, went back to the underworld, and signed another ten-year labor contract with the ghost officers.
Then I was reborn in the body of my comatose mother-in-law.
And just before my husband could announce that his stepdaughter was his only heir, I bellowed at the top of my lungs.
"Go tell that undutiful son of mine to get over here!"
...
When Simon got the news and rushed over, he found me sitting up in the hospital bed, full of energy.
Tears of excitement welled in his eyes as he leaned in close.
"Mom! You're finally awake!"
I have to say, watching him call me "Mom" without the faintest clue was really satisfying!
He'd never dream, not even in death, that his former wife had been reborn in his own mother's body!
I sat cross-legged, not even bothering to lift my eyelids.
"Come here."
Once Simon eagerly sat down beside me,
I raised the hand that didn't have an IV in it and gave him one loud, ringing slap!
"You undutiful son! What did you promise me back then? You swore you'd treat Ada and her daughter well for the rest of your life."
"And now look!"
"Ada is dead, and you actually threw her only daughter out of the house too?! Are you even human?!"
Simon saw stars from the slap. He covered his face, hung his head, and stood in front of me, mumbling.
"Mom! The guru said Althea is bad luck for me, that she jinxes my fortune and even my lifespan..."
"Oh, please!"
I sprang up out of the hospital bed, pointed at his nose, and cursed him out.
"What guru! He says it and you just believe him?!"
"What century are we living in? You'd actually disown your own flesh-and-blood daughter over garbage like that?!"
"I could just as easily say your fate is too harsh and you jinx your wives to deathwant to believe that?!"
Simon was so rattled by my tirade that he caved on the spot.
"Okay, okay, okay! I'll send someone to bring Althea back, all right, Mom? Please calm down!"
I sat back down, my eyes fixed on Simon, cold and menacing.
"Go find her right now! If I don't see my granddaughter within two hours, I'll make you pay!"
Simon nodded over and over and turned to run.
Just then his second wife, Jeanette, came into the ward with her daughter.
The two of them were carrying fruit and drinks and all, and they smiled when they saw me.
"Mom, I'm Jeanette, Simon's wife now."
"This is my daughter, Hailey, your granddaughter."
"We heard you were awake, so we hurried right over to see you..."
Standing there in my hospital gown, I looked the two of them up and down with a critical eye.
Back when my mother-in-law fell into her coma, I myself was still alive and well.
Jeanette, or whatever her name was, my mother-in-law had never even met her.
Now that I was reborn in my mother-in-law's body, naturally I wore the expression of someone seeing them for the very first time, and gave them a couple of once-overs.
Then I jumped up, pointed at Hailey, and rounded on Simon, eyes blazing.
"You undutiful son! When did you go and have a daughter this grown behind my back?!"
"She's got to be about the same age as Althea! You actually cheated while you were married?!"
And before he could explain, I hit him twice more, until his face was swollen.
Jeanette went pale with fright and rushed over to break it up.
"No, Mom... you've got it wrong!"
"She's my child with my ex-husband, not Simon's!"
I pulled my hand back at just the right moment and eyed them suspiciously.
Simon, his face bruised and swollen, nodded.
"You and Dad used to warn me every day not to fool around. How would I ever dare have a secret love child!"
I looked at him and sneered.
"If she's not your love child, then what right does she have to be your heir!"
Was Simon an idiot?
If his mother were really here, she'd absolutely call him brainless too!
Jeanette and Hailey both looked rather sour.
Hailey looked at me with a reproachful gaze, her voice sugary and whiny.
"Grandma! My mom and I haven't done anything to you, so why do you have to say such hurtful things!"
"The guru said that Althea, she..."
"I don't believe a single word out of that so-called guru!"
I stared sharply at Hailey and spoke slowly, one word at a time.
"The only granddaughter I acknowledge is Althea."
"If anything happens to her, I'll lay all of it on you and your mother!"
Jeanette and Hailey looked grim, but they didn't dare say a word to offend me.
Simon also quickly brought my daughter, Althea, back.
"Mom, look, Althea's right here! Nothing's happened to her!"
"Althea! Hurry and tell your grandma what you've been doing these past few days!"
I looked at my daughter's gaunt little face, a little worked up, my heart aching terribly.
"There, there, Althea, don't be afraid! MomGrandma's here!"
"Whatever's wrong, tell Grandma, and Grandma will make it right for you!"
There wasn't a trace of life in Althea's face. She stared at me blankly for a long moment, then burst into tears.
"Grandma! You're finally awake, boohoo..."
"My mom is gone, and now Dad doesn't want me anymore!"
"I wanted to come see you, but they wouldn't let me..."
My heart ached, both bitter and sore, and I said silently, Your mother is right here!
With one hand I held her, gently patting her back to soothe her.
With the other, I stared coldly at Simon and the other two.
"Which one of you kept my granddaughter from coming to see me!"
"You've got some nerve, don't you!"
Hailey didn't bother hiding her malice toward Althea. She shot her a glare, then stepped forward, chin high.
"I'm the one who had her stopped, so what?"
"Althea's already been kicked out of the house by my dad, so of course she has no right to come see you!"
"And Grandma, you don't know! The Charlatan said she's a jinxshe jinxed her own mother to death, and she might even jinx you! You'd better stay far away from her!"
With a cold smile I let go of Althea, and before anyone could react, I lunged forward and slapped Hailey hard across the face.
"You little beast! If you dare spit out one more bad word about Althea, I'll rip your mouth apart!"
Hailey covered her face and screamed.
Her mother, Jeanette, shielded her daughter, heartsick, and glared at me, furious.
"Mom! This is too far! Hailey was only telling the truthhow could you hit her!"
I sneered and raised my hand to give Jeanette a slap too.
"Fine! I won't hit her, I'll hit you!"
"When a child isn't taught, the fault lies with the mother! That fine daughter you raised, every other word out of her mouth is about some damn charlatanit makes me sick to hear it!"
Simon wanted to pull me back but didn't dare, so all he could do was carefully urge me to calm down.
"Mom, can we please drop it? Don't do anything rash!"
"Althea, you too! It's such a small thingwhy go running to Grandma about it? Can't you see there's still a needle stuck in Grandma's hand?"
"Hurry up and help Grandma sit down and rest!"
Althea wiped her tears, obediently did as she was told, and helped me back onto the hospital bed.
"Grandma, don't get upset, I'm fine."
"I just wanted to come see you and talk with you."
"Before she passed, the person my mother worried about most was you. I don't want her to be down in the next world and still not at ease..."
Silly child! I am your mother!
I stroked her gaunt little face, aching, wishing I could tell her right now.
Mom is back.
But I can't.
Now is not the time.
At the very least, I have to deal with these three first, and help my daughter take back the family's property!
I sighed, my gaze at Simon sharp and full of disgust.
"What are you standing there for?! Go make something good to eat for Althea!"
"Can't you see how thin she is, her face all sunken in!"
"What kind of father are you! The child that isn't even yours is plump and healthy, while your own is this skinny! People would laugh if word got out!"
Simon mumbled his agreement and turned to leave.
Back when his mother-in-law was alive, she'd always ordered Simon around to cook, and he never thought anything of it.
Jeanette, however, stopped him, none too pleased, her eyes full of reproach and lecturing as she looked at me.
"Mom, don't you know Simon's a boss now? His standing is nothing like it used to be. How can you still have him cook for Althea!"
I lifted my eyelids and looked at her quietly.
Jeanette shrank her neck back in fear, as if worried I'd hit her again.
But this time I didn't move at all.
"If you don't want him cooking for Althea and me, that's fine too."
"Simon, bring out all the money I gave you back then, along with the dowry money Althea's mother gave you."
"I'm taking Althea and splitting off from you. From now on, everyone lives their own life! Nobody interferes with anybody!"
The ward was completely silent.
After a long pause, Simon looked at me, flustered, and said:
"Mom, what are you saying? We're all one familyhow can we split it up?"
As he spoke, his gaze turned sharp and grim as he looked at Jeanette and her daughter.
"Stop trying to sow discord here! Whatever my mother says goes! Get out!"
Jeanette was so angry she was trembling all over.
Hailey was even more worked up than her mother. She stepped in front of Jeanette and rounded on Simon:
"Dad! How can you treat Mom like this! She's only looking out for you!"
I watched coldly from the sidelines and mocked Simon.
"You really are somethingletting a complete outsider with no blood relation tell you how to run things!"
Simon flew into a rage and glared at Hailey, snapping at her.
"Shut up! We don't need your mother standing here telling my mother what to do!"
Hailey felt utterly wronged and ran out crying.
Simon then dragged Jeanette off with him.
I called out to him before they reached the door.
"You listen to me. I don't care who you want to marry, but your daughter can only be Althea."
"Anyone who dares take Althea's place, I'll skin her and you both alive!"
Back when my mother-in-law was in good health, she had Simon completely under her thumb.
Now, ten years later, Simon still doesn't dare go against his mother's wishes.
"Mom, you just got over your illness, so you shouldn't eat anything too greasy. Althea has a delicate stomach too, so I made something lightgive it a try."
I didn't eat it. Instead, I pushed the bowl over to Althea.
"Good girl, look how thin you've gotten. Eat something."
Althea obediently agreed and lowered her head to pick up some food.
Her movements were shaky and a little cautious, but you could still tell she was wolfing it downshe must have been starving.
Thinking about the suffering my daughter had endured these past few days, my heart ached terribly, and I glared at Simon with red eyes.
"Look what you've done! Althea's so hungry she can't even hold her chopsticks steady!"
"Thank goodness I woke up. If I hadn't, the child could have starved to death out there and you wouldn't even have known!"
Simon gave an awkward, apologetic smile.
"How could that be, Mom? Althea has two hands and two feetif she got hungry, she could surely find a job herself!"
"I just... I just wanted to toughen her up a little! Hahaha..."
I didn't laugh. I questioned him with a cold face.
"Quit grinning and trying to change the subject!"
"Tell me! Why exactly did you let that Hailey inherit the family fortune?"
"She has absolutely no blood relation to youhave you lost your mind?"
Simon lowered his head and let me scold him, explaining carefully.
"It's because the master said"
"Shut up! If you say one more word about that master, I'll beat you to death!"
"Anyway, the company's been having some financial trouble lately, and someone said Hailey could help me get through the crisis..."
I was so angry I slapped him across the face.
"Anyone can see this is a scheme by Jeanette and her daughter. And you fell for it?!"
"Now! Announce publicly that Althea is your only heir!"
"Otherwise, I'll kick you out of that chairman's seat!"
No sooner had I finished speaking than Simon announced it, just as I'd told him to.
By the time Jeanette stormed into the ward with her daughter,
I was telling Althea that she had to bravely fight for what she wanted.
"It's all my fault... your mother and I raised you to be too sensible from a young age, so you never learned to fight for anything."
"You have to remember, once your father dies, this family is yours, and no one can take it away."
Simon hesitated a long while, then spoke up quietly from the side.
"Mom, the way you're talking... you can't really give Jeanette and the rest of them nothing at all, can you?"
"After all, she's been with me for several years!"
"And by law, a spouse is entitled to a share of my property too!"
I snapped at him, exasperated.
"So you do know it's only a share, not the whole thing!"
"You couldn't find anyone as stupid as you if you went looking with a lantern!"
I was on a roll with my scolding.
The ward door was suddenly kicked open.
Jeanette clacked in on her high heels and rushed straight at Simon, hitting him.
"You dog of a man! You were the one who begged me to marry you! You promised you'd be good to Hailey too!"
"And now you're going back on your word!"
"If you want a divorce, just say so!"
My eyes lit up, and I seized on her words at once.
"A divorce is great! I'm all for a divorce!"
Jeanette was a cunning, vicious woman. Once I was gone, who knew how she'd bully Althea.
Better to settle it once and for all and have her divorce Simon!
But I had underestimated Simon's feelings for her.
The moment he heard the word "divorce," his face went as panicked as if he owed tens of millions. He threw his arms around Jeanette and shouted,
"I won't divorce her!"
He turned to look at me, his eyes full of reproach.
"Mom! It wasn't until I met Jeanette that I understood what true love really is!"
"I have no objection to Althea inheriting the company, but if you're asking me to divorce, absolutely not!"
I looked at him standing there with tears in his eyes.
And I regretted ever choosing such a man back in the day.
I must have been blind.
Held in his arms, Jeanette shot me a smug, malicious smile.
Then her eyes rolled back and she fainted.
Before long, the doctor said she was three months pregnant and mustn't be upset during this time.
Jeanette leaned against Simon's chest, her smile both frail and triumphant.
"Mom, I'm carrying your grandson in here. Don't just dote on your granddaughter and neglect your grandson!"
I gave a cold snort and rolled my eyes.
"You look like a grandson to me!"
I'd made Simon and Jeanette both storm off in a huff.
For several days after that, Jeanette tried every trick to get Simon to agree to change the company's heir back to Hailey.
But as long as I wouldn't budge, Simon had no way to get the company's shareholders to agree to Jeanette's demands.
Just as I was preparing to be discharged and give Jeanette and her daughter a proper reckoning,
she came to the hospital to see me, belly out, bringing along someone dressed in a Taoist robe.
"Master, take a look, this is my mother-in-law!"
"I asked Simon about it, and he said her personality changed completely after she woke up. Could she have been possessed by some evil spirit?"
I narrowed my eyes.
I didn't even need to think to know what Jeanette was scheming. I was just about to speak
when I saw the so-called master squint at me for a moment, his expression turning grave.
"Something's definitely off! If I'm not mistaken, this is a case of body-possession!"
Jeanette shrieked and immediately ran into Simon's arms, staring at me in fear.
Althea's face went red with anger. She stood up to speak up for me, but I held her down firmly.
"Don't be in such a hurry, Althea."
"There's no point arguing with an idiot like that."
As I said it, I simply pulled out my phone and called the police.
"Hello, I'd like to report someone at this hospital carrying out feudal superstitious activities!"
