The Mafia Don Who Begged His Wife for Revenge
Favio Guerrero, my husband, brought Isabella into our home six months before Isabella killed our daughter.
Favio was the Don of the Guerrero Syndicate and the President of Guerrero Corporation, an empire built on mining, diamonds, and jewelry. He had money, power, and enough enemies to make most people afraid to even say his name.
But with me he was different.
I'll spoil you for the rest of your life, Adeline, he'd promised. I'll make you the happiest Donna in the world. You'll never have to worry about anything as long as I'm here.
And he really kept his word.
Then we had Angelica.
Our six-year-old daughter became the center of everything.
Favio adored her to an almost ridiculous degree. He'd interrupt business meetings because she wanted him to come home for dinner. He'd personally check the security cameras whenever she went outside. Once, when one of his men joked that Angelica had inherited her father's temper, Favio had looked at him coldly and said, Anyone who touches my daughter dies.
I believed him.
So when Angelica was diagnosed with kidney failure and needed a transplant, I volunteered immediately.
I would give her mine.
There was never another choice.
The night before our surgery, I sat beside her hospital bed and held her hand while she asked if giving her my kidney would hurt.
A little, I told her.
She frowned. Then I don't want it.
I smiled and kissed her forehead.
Mommy will be fine. You just have to get better.
She believed me.
So did I.
We had the best doctors in Italy. Favio had arranged everything himself, from the specialists to the transplant team. Angelica's surgery was supposed to be routine.
Then Isabella appeared.
She was the daughter of a Mafia informant who had once helped the Guerrero Syndicate. Her father was murdered after refusing to betray Favio, leaving Isabella alone.
Six months before Angelica's surgery, Favio brought her into our home.
He said he owed her father a debt.
I accepted that explanation.
I even welcomed her.
What I didn't understand was how quickly she became important to him.
The strange part was that Isabella looked almost exactly like a younger version of me.
The same dark hair, similar eyes, the same small nose and even some of the same expressions. More than once, people had mistaken us for sisters.
Favio had noticed it too.
She reminds me of you when you were young, he'd told me once.
I remember laughing. Maybe that's why you like her.
He hadn't answered.
At the time, I thought nothing of it.
Isabella was studying medicine and completing her surgical training at the same hospital where Angelica was being treated.
She was around us constantly.
She helped with paperwork, checked charts, and assisted the medical staff. She knew the doctors. She knew the transplant schedule. She knew exactly when Angelica's surgery was happening.
I trusted her.
That was my mistake.
The morning of the transplant, I kissed Angelica before the nurses wheeled me into the operating room.
I love you, Mommy, she whispered.
I love you more.
Then the doors closed.
Hours later, I woke up with pain in my side and a dry throat.
My first thought was Angelica.
Where's my daughter?
The nurse went silent.
I knew something was wrong.
A doctor came into the room a few minutes later. He looked exhausted.
Donna, there there was a complication.
I immediately sat up. What did you say? What happened?!
The transplanted kidney wasn't compatible.
I stared at him. That doesn't make sense! It was my kidney.
He looked down at the chart.
Donna, the organ implanted in your daughter wasn't the kidney documented for the transplant.
For several seconds, I couldn't understand the words.
What?!
There appears to have been an error during organ transfer.
Where's Angelica?
The doctor answered that my Angelica had suffered acute rejection during surgery. Her body couldn't accept the organ, and despite the medical team's efforts, they couldn't save her.
The hospital immediately opened an investigation.
That's when Isabella's name came up.
Shed been working in the transplant unit that morning. More importantly, she was the last trainee documented to have handled the organ transfer records.
When questioned, Isabella claimed it was an accident.
She said she had been working on a research project involving animal kidneys and organ preservation under a senior surgeon. During an emergency transfer, shed supposedly moved the wrong container and mixed up the labels.
Then the hospital checked the security footage. Isabella had entered the restricted transplant storage area alone. And the investigation concluded that Isabella had done it deliberately.
When I confronted her, she cried.
I grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her until her head snapped back.
"ISABELLA! MY DAUGHTER WAS ONLY SIX YEARS OLD! HOW COULD YOU?!" She stumbled back.
"You switched her kidney with a pig's kidney!" I roared, "My daughter died in agony and you smiled while she suffered!"
She didn't answer. She just smiled.
That was when I knew. There had never been an accident. She'd planned it. Maybe she'd planned it from the moment she walked into our home.
My daughter was buried three days later.
I stood beside her grave until everyone left.
I didn't cry.
I had spent the last three days doing nothing but crying. That night, I changed into a black dress and called my bodyguards.
Bring Isabella to the warehouse.
They didn't ask questions.
When Isabella saw me, she immediately started begging.
I didn't listen.
My daughter died because of her. I gave my men one order.
"Break every bone in her body. And crush her hands so she never operates again."
Her face went white.
"Adeline, please! Not my hands! They are everything to me Favio will never forgive you! Favio loves me and you know it!
I turned away as my men dragged her across the warehouse.
Then the doors suddenly flew open.
STOP!
I turned.
Favio stood in the doorway. Isabella!
He rushed inside, his face changing when he saw how badly she had been hurt.
What the hell are you doing? he shouted.
My bodyguards stepped back as Favio crossed the warehouse and grabbed my wrist.
Addy, what have you done?
I looked down at his hand around my wrist. Let me go!
Are you out of your mind?
She killed Angelica!
His expression hardened. I know what happened. Isabella made a mistake.
I stared at him in disbelief. A mistake?! She switched my kidney with an animal kidney and put it inside our daughter's body! She killed our daughter!
I know you're grieving, Addy, but you can't punish her like this.
Can't I?! I yanked my wrist from his grip. I gave my kidney to Angelica! I woke up missing an organ, and my daughter was dead because someone deliberately replaced it! And you're standing here defending that woman!
He opened his mouth, but before he could answer, a broken cry came from the floor.
Favio...
We both turned.
Isabella was trembling violently. Favio... she whimpered. It hurts! Please... it hurts so much. I can't breathe.
Favio's expression changed instantly.
He dropped to his knees beside her.
Isabella!
She grabbed weakly at his sleeve, tears spilling down her face. Please don't let them hurt me anymore. I know I made a mistake. I know... Just please make it stop.
He looked at the blood covering her clothes and the bruises spreading across her face.
Get a doctor! he ordered.
I stared at him.
He hadn't looked at Angelica like that when she was dying. He hadn't looked at me like that when I woke up without a kidney. But one cry from Isabella, and suddenly he couldn't stand to see her suffer.
Favio's face was cold when he looked at me.
There wasn't even a trace of the man I'd known for seven years.
Guards, take Donna Adeline to the underground holding room. Lock her there until she calms down. I don't want to see her until she can think properly.
I stared at him, my side throbbing from the surgery. You're locking me up?
You fucking attacked Isabella!
A bodyguard reached for me, but I shoved his hand away. Don't touch me!
Take her.
Favio! Rage exploded through me. She killed our daughter, and you're punishing me for retaliating?!
His expression didn't change. Isabella made a mistake. You chose to hurt her.
Then Isabella spoke.
Favio, wait.
He turned toward her immediately.
I don't think locking her away is enough, she whispered.
My eyes narrowed.
Favio frowned. What do you want?
Isabella lowered her gaze. I don't want her dead. I just want her to understand what it feels like to be helpless. Then she looked at him. Take her to the Blood Road.
My blood ran cold.
The Blood Road was where the Guerrero Syndicate punished traitors. Anyone sent there was chained to the back of a convoy and dragged along the private road until Favio's men decided the punishment was enough.
I stared at Isabella. You're insane.
She gave me a faint smile.
Maybe. But I'm not the one who ordered someone to break my bones.
Favio was silent for several seconds.
Then he said, Prepare the convoy.
My heart dropped.
You're actually doing this?
He didn't answer.
The guards seized me before I could react.
I fought them hard, but my body was still weak from surgery. One of them twisted my arms behind my back while another locked a chain around my wrists.
Let go of me!
They dragged me outside.
Several black Guerrero vehicles were already waiting.
My hands were chained behind me, and a heavy chain was secured around my neck and connected to the back of the last vehicle.
I turned toward Favio one last time.
He stood beside Isabella.
She had been helped to her feet, and she was leaning against him.
My husband was holding the woman who killed our daughter while his own wife was being chained to a vehicle.
Something inside me went completely cold.
I stopped struggling.
I looked directly at Favio.
I won't forget this.
For the first time, his eyes flickered then he looked away.
The convoy started moving.
The chain snapped tight.
I stumbled forward, barely able to keep my feet beneath me. The vehicles accelerated, dragging me along the private road.
Pain tore through my body.
I fell.
The convoy didn't stop.
My shoulder struck the ground, and I was dragged across the gravel, my clothes tearing against the road. Every movement reopened the pain in my side, but I gritted my teeth and refused to scream.
I wouldn't give Favio that satisfaction.
Through the blur of tears, I looked back.
He was still standing there.
I closed my eyes.
Angelica's face appeared in my mind.
My little girl. A bitter laugh escaped my throat.
The pain was unbearable, and the humiliation was worse. My consciousness slowly started fading as the convoy dragged me down the dark road.
Then, for some reason, I remembered the past.
Favio and I had been childhood sweethearts. He'd followed me around since we were kids, always grabbing my hand whenever another boy came near.
Addy is mine!
He'd say it so proudly that everyone laughed and teased him, saying Favio Guerrero wouldn't survive a day without me.
When I turned twenty, he proposed at an amusement park. We'd just gotten off a ride when he suddenly took my hand and pulled out a ring.
Addy, I've waited long enough. I want to marry you. I want you beside me for the rest of my life.
I cried and said yes.
After we married, he treated me even better. He'd cross half of Italy at midnight just because I'd mentioned wanting pastries from a certain bakery. He'd cancel meetings when I wasn't feeling well, and every anniversary, he'd still find a way to surprise me.
Then Angelica came into our lives.
Favio completely lost his mind over our daughter. The day she was born, he raised the salaries of all his employees and came home carrying boxes of expensive jewelry for me.
For you, he'd said.
Why are you giving me all this?
Because you gave me my daughter.
He'd been the happiest I'd ever seen him.
At night, he'd wake up whenever Angelica cried and take the bottle from me.
Sleep, Addy. I'll feed her.
I'd wake up hours later and find him asleep in the nursery chair with our baby in his arms.
I thought that was the life we'd have forever.
Then Isabella appeared.
People often mistook us for sisters.
At first, I didn't think much of it but then Favio started changing.
He carried tamarin candies I hated in his pockets. He wore simple hair bands around his wrist. And one night, while we were having sex, he accidentally whispered her name.
Isabella.
I froze.
After that, I secretly investigated.
Everything led back to her.
When I finally decided to confront Isabella, I was hit by a car on my way out. When I woke up in the hospital, Favio was standing beside my bed.
I thought he'd come because he was worried about me.
Instead, the first thing he said was, Addy, I didn't mean for you to get hurt, but I hope you won't cause trouble for Isabella.
I stared at him. You knew?
He didn't answer.
Did you arrange the accident?
Don't make this harder than it needs to be.
My whole body went cold.
I could barely believe the man standing in front of me was the same man who'd once followed me everywhere.
I swallowed and asked, What exactly is your relationship with Isabella?
Favio rubbed his forehead, looking irritated.
I wanted to hide this from you, but you already found out. I fell in love with her.
My heart sank. You love her?
Yes.
He didn't hesitate.
I don't know how it happened, Addy, but I really like her. I haven't felt this way before.
I stared at him through my tears.
What about me? What about everything we've had since we were children?
He was silent for a moment before saying, Maybe I confused wanting you with loving you. You were always the girl everyone admired, and I wanted you to be mine. I thought that was love. But Isabella, she made me realize what love actually feels like.
I laughed bitterly.
So after all these years, you're telling me you never loved me?
I'm saying I didn't understand my feelings. He looked at me calmly. But I won't abandon you. You can still be my wife, and you'll still have everything you've always had. Just don't hurt Isabella.
I stared at him as if he'd lost his mind.
He was asking me to stay his wife while loving another woman.
Then he walked out.
...
I spent the next few days convincing myself he'd come back.
He didn't.
Instead, Isabella became more involved in our home and in Favio's life. She was always beside him, and because of her medical training, he trusted her more and more.
The woman who'd once been the center of Favio's world slowly became someone he barely noticed.
And now, as the convoy dragged me down the road, I finally understood that the Favio I loved was gone.
Maybe he'd been gone for a long time.
I closed my eyes as the pain became too much to bear.
Favio, I whispered.
I don't love you anymore.
When I woke up again, I was lying in a hospital bed with fresh bandages wrapped around my wrists, neck, and the wounds I'd gotten from being dragged behind Favio's convoy.
The room was empty. So I slowly pushed myself up, biting back a groan when pain shot through my body and quietly finished my discharge papers then left the hospital.
As I passed the nurses' station, I overheard a few nurses talking.
Miss Pierno in the VIP ward is so lucky. Don Favio stayed with her the whole night and didn't even sleep, one of them said. I heard her injuries weren't even that serious, but he looked so worried. Meanwhile, Donna Adeline was dragged here by a Mafia convoy in terrible condition, and she's been alone this whole time.
Another nurse sighed. People really do change. Everyone used to say Don Favio was crazy about his wife, but now it looks like someone else has taken her place.
I kept walking.
Their words hurt, but strangely, I couldn't cry anymore.
...
I went straight to a law firm.
The lawyer looked surprised when I placed an old document on his desk.
I want a divorce.
He picked it up and read it carefully. It was an agreement Favio and I had made years ago, back when we were newly married.
It had started as a joke.
I still remembered sitting beside him and making him sign it.
Favio, I'm telling you now. I can't tolerate betrayal or injustice. If you ever hurt me badly enough that I can't forgive you, I'll leave without looking back.
He'd laughed so hard that his shoulders shook. And what if I beg?
You can beg all you want.
What if I kneel?
Still no.
He'd pulled me into his arms and kissed the top of my head. Then I'll never give you a reason to leave.
I had believed him.
The lawyer finished reading and looked at me. The signature is authentic. This agreement can be used as part of your divorce proceedings. You'll still have to go through the required cooling-off period before the divorce can be finalized.
Okay.
You're sure you don't want to reconsider?
I gave him a small smile. There's nothing to reconsider.
I signed everything that needed to be signed and left.
...
When I returned to the Guerrero villa, it felt colder than it ever had before.
Favio didn't come home for several days.
I didn't wait for him.
I started removing everything that reminded me of him. Our wedding photos went into boxes. The anniversary gifts went into another. His clothes were taken out of our closet, along with the watches, jewelry, handwritten notes, and all the little things he'd given me over the years.
Then I started packing my own things.
I was halfway through my luggage when I heard the front door open.
Favio had finally come back and Isabella was with him.
Her injuries had mostly healed, and she walked beside him without much trouble. She still wore the same innocent expression that had fooled everyone around her.
Favio looked up at me as I came downstairs.
Addy.
I didn't answer.
He seemed to expect me to say something, but when I remained silent, he sighed.
Isabella spent a week in the hospital because of you. This needs to end now. She's already apologized for what happened to Angelica, and I've told you before, we can't bring our daughter back. I had the best burial place prepared for Angelica. I know that doesn't make up for what happened, but you need to stop hurting yourself and everyone around you.
I listened without expression.
There was a time when every word from Favio could affect me.
Now, I couldn't even find the energy to hate him.
Isabella stepped forward and touched her side where she'd been injured.
I'm a surgeon, Adeline. Well, I'm still completing my hospital training, but I know exactly what a serious injury looks like. I know what I went through, and I know what you went through. So please stop acting like collapsing after the Blood Road is going to make Favio pity you.
I looked at her once then I looked away.
She continued, I've already apologized for what happened to Angelica. I know you hate me, but I can't change the past. Angelica is gone, and no amount of punishment is going to bring her back. You should stop blaming yourself too.
I remained silent.
Isabella seemed irritated by my lack of reaction, but she quickly recovered and smiled.
You should be grateful Favio is still willing to stay with you after everything.
I almost laughed.
Grateful?
Isabella glanced at Favio before looking back at me. And if you're really worried about Angelica having no one anymore, there's another way. I can give you another child.
My expression didn't change.
Isabella took Favio's arm and leaned against him. Favio and I are already together, and we're planning to have a baby. Sooner or later, I'll get pregnant. When that happens, I'll give you the child.
I stared at her.
Think about it. You lost Angelica, and I know how much you loved her. If I have Favio's child, you can raise that baby. It'll still be a Guerrero child, and you'll still be its mother.
My fingers tightened around the handle of my suitcase.
Stupid bitch. I was about to walk past them when Isabella grabbed my arm.
Bitch? Me? she snapped. If anyone here is a bitch, its YOU! You had your men beat me so badly I couldnt even finish my hospital training for a whole week. I had patients to assist with, surgeries to observe, and reports to complete!
She looked at me, then smiled faintly.
But I don't want to make things difficult. Since I'm going to be handling the Guerrero family's affairs now, I need someone I can trust to help me.
I frowned.
You. I want you to become my personal assistant. You'll organize my schedule, prepare the documents I need, accompany me to the hospital when necessary, and handle whatever errands I give you.
My fingers curled at my sides.
I'm the eldest daughter of the De Santis family. I've managed businesses and attended meetings with people who'd never even be allowed near the Guerrero Corporation's boardroom. And you want me to carry your bags and run your errands? How fucking shameful you are?
Isabella's expression changed immediately. Her eyes became watery as she turned toward Favio.
Favio, didn't you say you'd let me handle the family's affairs? You said everyone in the household would cooperate with me, including her.
Favio's face turned cold as he looked at me. Addy, go with Isabella.
I stared at him for a moment before asking, You want me to work for your mistress? Wow!
Don't call her that, Addy.
A bitter laugh escaped me. Then what should I call her, Favio? Your surgeon? Your protected little fucking sister? Or the woman you're sleeping with?
Bitch! His voice dropped. Don't push me today.
I shook my head. I'm not doing this.
His jaw tightened. You're still refusing?
Yes.
He studied me for several seconds before his expression became colder. You may be the eldest daughter of the De Santis family, Addy, but you're also my wife. You're living under my roof, protected by my name, and your family's assets have been under my management for years. Don't forget that after your parents died, I was the one who took care of everything. I handled the De Santis businesses while you were dealing with your grief and Angelica's treatment. I merged the companies, protected the assets, and built them into something stronger.
I never asked you to take them!
No, you didn't, he said calmly. But I did it because you couldn't.
That hurt because there was some truth in it.
After my parents died, I could barely function. Then Angelica became sick, and my entire world revolved around her. Favio stepped in and took control of the De Santis businesses, eventually merging them with his own empire. He expanded Guerrero Corporation into an even greater force in mining and jewelry, and at the time, I had been grateful. I trusted him to protect what my parents had left me.
I never imagined he would one day use those same things to control me.
You're my only family now, Favio said. I'm the one who calls the shots in this house.
My only family.
The words brought back the memory of my parents' funeral, of Favio kneeling beside me in front of their coffins and holding me while I cried. He had promised them he would take care of me, that he would love me and protect me for the rest of his life.
Now he was using that promise to corner me.
I forced myself to breathe. So that's what I am now? Someone you can control because I have no one left?
Favio stepped closer, his expression unreadable. If you refuse to go with Isabella, I'll have Angelica's ashes removed from the family mausoleum.
My head lifted slowly.
His eyes stayed on mine.
I'll have them thrown into the lake.
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
He knew exactly what he was doing. Angelica's ashes were the only thing I had left of my daughter.
You wouldn't!
I would, he replied without hesitation. If you refuse to cooperate, the ashes will be taken out tomorrow.
My fingers began to shake, so I clasped my hands together and lowered my eyes.
He was using our daughter against me.
Fine. I'll go.
The tension in Favio's face eased immediately. That's all I wanted.
I nodded, keeping my eyes down.
Isabella came closer, her voice sweet again. Thank you, Adeline. I'll send you my schedule tomorrow.
I looked at her once, then turned away without answering.
The next morning, I was already waiting outside when Isabella came downstairs.
My side still hurt badly. The kidney surgery had taken a lot out of me, and after being dragged behind Favio's convoy on the Blood Road, even walking for a few minutes made the wound ache. But I went anyway. I didn't have a choice.
Favio came out a few minutes later in a dark suit, his phone already in his hand. He looked exactly like the ruthless Don everyone in Italy feared. He was about to get into his car when Isabella stopped him.
Favio, you should go to work. You're the president of Guerrero Corporation, and you make millions sitting in that office. Why waste your time coming to a mining site with us? She smiled and touched his arm. I'll take care of Adeline. You don't have to worry about her.
Favio glanced at me before looking back at her. Addy, Isabella just recovered. Don't let her overdo anything. Stay close to her and help whenever she needs you.
I looked at him. I'm the one who was dragged down the Blood Road.
Silence followed.
I didn't say anything else.
Isabella simply smiled. Don't worry, Favio. I'll keep an eye on her.
Favio kissed her forehead before turning toward his car. Just before he left, he looked at me. Be good, Addy.
I almost laughed.
Be good.
After everything he'd done to me, that was what he had left to say. I turned away and watched his car disappear down the road.
Isabella waited until it was gone before her sweet expression vanished.
The drive to one of Guerrero Corporation's mining sites outside the city was quiet. When we arrived, several employees immediately came toward us.
Donna Adeline, welcome to the site, one of the supervisors said respectfully. You should have told us you were coming. We'll prepare a proper
She isn't Donna anymore.
Isabella's voice cut him off.
Everyone went silent.
She slowly lifted her hand, deliberately displaying the ring on her finger.
My breath caught.
I knew that ring!
It had belonged to my mother.
My father had given it to her years ago, and after she died, it became one of the few things I had left of her. I had once told Favio that I would never give it to anyone.
Now Isabella was wearing it.
She smiled when she saw my eyes on it. I'm the one you should be calling Donna now. Isabella turned toward the supervisor. From today onward, Adeline will be helping me with the work here. Give her something useful to do.
The man hesitated. But Donna Adeline is still the
I said she's helping me. Her smile disappeared. Give her something to do.
The supervisor reluctantly pointed toward a heavy metal cart.
T-take that to the storage area.
I stared at the cart.
My side still hurts.
Isabella shrugged. So?
I said nothing.
Move it.
I walked over and grabbed the handle.
The cart was heavier than I expected. The moment I pushed it, pain shot through my side, but I kept going.
Behind me, Isabella walked toward the supervisor's office as if she owned the entire site.
I want iced water and coffee, she said. Fresh coffee. And don't make me wait.
Yes, Miss Pierno.
I kept pushing.
I heard the employees whispering behind me.
Isn't that Donna Adeline?
She's the Don's wife.
Then why is she doing manual work?
Didn't you hear? Miss Pierno is Don Favio's mistress.
She's wearing the Don's engagement ring.
Isn't that Donna's mother's ring?
I wouldn't talk so loudly if I were you.
I pretended not to hear them.
Then gunfire erupted.
Get down!
The first shots sent everyone running.
I barely had time to turn before another gunshot cracked through the air.
BANG!
Something slammed into my shoulder. I stumbled against the cart and collapsed.
A hot, sharp pain spread through my arm.
When I looked down, blood was already soaking through my clothes.
I'd been shot.
Isabella screamed and ran in the opposite direction but she suddenly fell, clutching her knee.
It hurts!
The Guerrero guards immediately surrounded her.
Protect Miss Pierno!
Get everyone inside!
More gunshots echoed through the mountain before the guards returned fire. The attackers eventually retreated into the trees, leaving the mining site in chaos.
I remained against the cart, pressing my good hand over my shoulder.
Isabella was still sitting on the ground, dramatically clutching her knee.
Then she noticed me.
You got shot?
She stood and her limp disappeared.
She walked toward me and examined the wound with the detached expression of a doctor inspecting a minor inconvenience.
It isn't that deep.
I stared at her. You're a surgeon. Call the hospital.
No need. Her lips curled into a smile. I'll fix it.
I don't want you touching me!
Her smile disappeared. Adeline, don't be difficult.
I said no.
She pulled out her phone and casually glanced at the screen. Fine. I'll call Favio.
I went still.
She looked at me and smiled. He loves me, remember? And I'm sure he'll be very interested to hear that his wife refused my help after getting shot. She leaned closer, lowering her voice so only I could hear. Or perhaps I should remind him about Angelica's ashes.
My blood ran cold.
She watched my reaction with obvious satisfaction.
You remember what he said, don't you? If you don't behave, he can make those ashes disappear.
I stared at her.
Fine.
Her smile widened.
Good girl.
She took me to the small medical room at the mining site.
The moment I entered, I knew something was wrong. There was no proper operating equipment, no anesthetic, and barely enough medical supplies to treat a minor injury.
I looked at Isabella. Where's the anesthetic?
We don't need it.
My stomach tightened. You're insane.
She laughed. Don't flatter yourself. I'm not wasting anesthetic on you.
She looked at two Guerrero employees standing nearby. Hold her.
They hesitated.
Isabella's expression hardened. I said hold her.
The men grabbed my arms.
I struggled immediately. Wait!
Isabella picked up a surgical knife.
My heart began pounding.
Isabella, don't.
She rolled her eyes. Stop acting like a child. You're already lucky I'm willing to treat you.
She pressed the blade against my injured shoulder.
I screamed as pain ripped through me.
The men held me down while Isabella worked without anesthesia, completely calm despite my shaking.
After several minutes, she suddenly paused and examined the wound.
Oh, no.
My breathing became uneven.
What?
She smiled.
I think the bullet went deeper than I thought.
She lifted the knife again.
Let me open the skin a little more and take a better look.
My eyes widened.
Isabella, stop!
She ignored me.
The blade pressed deeper.
I screamed again, but Isabella only smiled.
Hold her tighter. She's moving too much.
The men tightened their grip.
Isabella continued as if she were performing an ordinary procedure, completely unbothered by my screams.
You know, she said casually, you're actually very lucky. If I hadn't been here, you might have bled to death.
I stared at her through tears.
She leaned closer.
So you should be thanking me!
The pain became unbearable.
There was no anesthesia. Every time Isabella pushed the knife into my shoulder, my body jerked hard. I tried to pull away, but the two men holding me down were too strong.
Hold her properly, Isabella ordered.
I screamed behind the cloth over my mouth and gripped the edge of the table as tightly as I could. My whole body was shaking. My vision kept going dark, then coming back.
Almost done, Isabella said.
Another sharp pain went through my shoulder, and my body convulsed. I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore. The room started spinning, Isabella's voice became harder to hear, and everything slowly went dark.
Then I passed out and ghe next thing I heard was Favio's voice.
Where is she? I got a report that my wife was shot. Where is Adeline?
His footsteps came closer.
The clinic door opened, and Isabella reacted immediately. She grabbed the surgical knife and stabbed her own arm.
Ah! Adeline, why are you hurting me?
The two men froze.
Isabella started crying as she held her bleeding arm. I was trying to help her! I'm a surgeon, and I was removing the bullet when she suddenly attacked me!
The clinic doors opened fully, and Favio rushed inside.
He stopped when he saw me unconscious on the table, blood covering my clothes, my shoulder still bleeding.
Then he saw Isabella.
She immediately ran toward him. "Favio, I'm scared!"
He caught her. "What happened?"
Isabella pointed at me. "She attacked me. I was only trying to remove the bullet because we didn't have enough medical supplies here, but she suddenly fought me and tried to hurt me."
Somewhere far away, I heard one of the men beside the table finally speak. "Don, that's not what happened. She"
"Shut up!" Favio shouted.
The man immediately stopped.
Isabella cried harder. "I swear I was helping her. I didn't do anything to her."
I felt him turn toward me.
I was still unconscious. My breathing was weak, and blood was still coming from my shoulder.
Instead of calling for help, he walked over and grabbed me.
"Adeline!" He shook me. "Wake up!"
My head moved helplessly to the side.
"You attacked Isabella? How dare you? You already hurt her once, and now you tried to murder her?"
Favio slapped me.
My head turned to the side.
He slapped me again.
I still didn't move.
Somewhere behind him, Isabella stood. For a second, I would have sworn a small smile crossed her face before she quickly lowered her head and started crying again.
"Favio, stop," she said as she grabbed his arm. "She's already badly injured."
"She hurt you."
"I know, but she's been shot too. We should take her to the hospital. I'm just afraid she'll attack me again."
I felt him look at me with disgust.
"She doesn't need a hospital."
Isabella sounded surprised. "But she's bleeding."
"She's pretending," Favio said coldly. "I know my wife. She's trying to get sympathy."
Somewhere in the dark, two men looked at each other and stayed silent.
Isabella looked at me again. "Then let her stay here tonight. Just don't leave me alone with her."
"I won't."
Favio bent down and picked Isabella up.
She immediately wrapped her arms around his neck.
"Don't be afraid," he told her.
He carried her out of the clinic.
He never looked back at me.
When I opened my eyes, the first person I saw was Favio.
He was standing beside my bed with his arms crossed, looking at me like I was the one who'd done something wrong.
The first thing he said was, How dare you hurt Isabella again, Addy? You assaulted her after she was only trying to treat your gunshot wound. You should be thanking me. I pitied you enough to have my men bring you here instead of leaving you at that clinic.
I stared at him in disbelief.
He really came here to say that?
Not to ask if I was alive.
Not to ask how badly I was hurt.
Not even to ask what happened.
He came here to defend her.
Favio continued, his voice cold. Isabella is terrified of you now. You need to go apologize to her. She's already been through enough because of you!
I let out a bitter laugh, but it quickly turned into a sob.
Apologize? I whispered, staring at the man I'd loved for seven years. You want me to apologize to Isabella?
Yes. You hurt her again, Addy. At least have the decency to admit what you did.
I couldn't stop the tears anymore.
Favio, I hate you.
His expression changed slightly.
I laughed again, but there was nothing happy about it. I really hate you. I don't even know who you are anymore.
My voice shook as I looked at him.
You used to be the man who'd panic whenever I had a fever. You used to stay beside Angelica's bed all night when she was sick. You used to tell me that no one in this world would ever hurt me as long as you were alive.
I wiped my tears, but more kept falling.
And now you're standing here telling me to apologize to the woman who killed our daughter.
Favio's jaw tightened. Don't start this again.
Again? I stared at him. Our daughter is dead, Favio! Angelica is dead! She was six years old, and Isabella switched the organ that was supposed to save her!
You don't know that she intended for Angelica to die.
I don't care what you call it anymore!
My voice cracked.
She took my kidney and put the wrong organ into our daughter's body. Angelica died because of her, and you still protect her. You still stand beside her. You still believe everything she says. Favio, I hope that if there's a second life, I'll never meet you again. I regret the day I fell in love with you, Favio. I regret trusting you. I regret believing every promise you made to me.
My voice broke completely.
I regret giving you seven years of my life.
"You!
I couldn't hold it anymore. I slapped him.
Hard.
Then the ward door opened.
Isabella walked in.
She was still wearing her hospital clothes, and her arm was bandaged from the injury she'd inflicted on herself. Unlike the helpless girl she'd pretended to be before Favio arrived, she looked perfectly composed now.
Her eyes moved from Favio to me.
Favio, what happened?
Favio immediately turned toward her.
It's nothing. Adeline's upset because I told her to apologize for hurting you.
Isabella quickly shook her head. No, Favio. I already told you that I don't blame her. I was trying to treat her, and things got out of control. She was injured, confused, and probably terrified.
I almost laughed.
She was unbelievable.
She'd been cutting into my shoulder without anesthesia, and now she was pretending to defend me.
Isabella walked toward my bed while carrying a covered bowl.
But I brought something that might help her recover faster.
I frowned.
What is that?
Something natural, she said casually. My father used to use it whenever his men were injured, and it's supposed to help wounds heal. Since you're recovering from a gunshot, I thought you might need it.
She removed the cover.
The smell hit me immediately.
I almost gagged.
What the hell is that?
Isabella smiled.
Organic medicine. It's natural, and it's supposed to be good for injuries. My family has used it for years, especially for wounds caused by bullets. It's not expensive, and you don't need to worry about wasting medicine.
Isabella brought the bowl closer.
Come on, Adeline. Drink it. It'll help you recover faster.
I pushed her hand away.
Get that away from me.
She frowned. Why are you being difficult? I'm trying to help you! After you assaulted me, you should be grateful I'm still this kind.
She lifted the bowl toward my lips anyway.
I turned my face away, but I was too weak to stop her completely. A few mouthfuls touched my lips before I gagged and shoved her hand away.
What the hell did you give me?!
Isabella smiled. Cow's urine. I already told you. It's natural, and it's good for wounds.
Cows urine?
I stared at Isabella in disbelief. My stomach turned immediately. I was already weak and in pain, and now she wanted me to drink that?
Its good for bullet wounds, Isabella said casually. Its a traditional remedy, and people have used it for years. Drink it, Adeline. It'll help you recover faster.
Addy, Isabella is trying to help. Just drink a little and stop making things harder.
I laughed bitterly. You call this helping?
Isabella sighed. You're being difficult again. I'm a surgeon, Adeline. I know what I'm doing. If you refuse treatment, don't blame me when your recovery takes longer.
My hands started shaking. You're a surgeon in training, Isabella. You know this isn't proper treatment for a gunshot wound.
She shrugged. And you're not in any position to lecture me about medicine.
That was enough.
I grabbed the vase from the bedside table and threw it at the wall. Get out!
The vase shattered, and before either of them could react, I grabbed the water glass and threw that too.
Both of you, get out of my room! I don't want to see either of you!
Isabella jumped back and stared at the broken pieces. Adeline, what's wrong with you? That vase was expensive! You can't just destroy everything because you don't like something.
I stared at her. You're worried about a vase?
She folded her arms. Of course I am. If you're going to stay in this hospital, you need to stop acting like a spoiled child.
I laughed again, but tears were already running down my face. Get out.
Isabella looked at Favio. See? She's threatening me again.
Favio sighed. Addy, calm down. Isabella didn't mean anything by it.
I stared at him, feeling something inside me crack a little more. Then take her and leave.
Addy.
I said leave!
My voice cracked. I reached into the bedside drawer and grabbed the spare scalpel.
Both of them froze.
I pointed it at them. Are you leaving or not?
Favio's face immediately changed. Addy, put the knife down.
No.
Listen to me. You're injured, you're exhausted, and you're not thinking clearly.
I laughed through my tears. I'm thinking perfectly clearly, Favio. I just don't want either of you near me.
Isabella stepped closer. Favio, I'm scared.
Favio moved in front of her. Addy, enough. Put it down.
I looked at him for a long moment before finally lowering my hand. You know what? Fine.
The scalpel fell to the floor.
Then my legs gave out.
I slid down beside the bed and covered my face, crying until my chest hurt. Favio used to hate seeing me cry. Even when we were young, he'd panic whenever I got hurt. He'd hold me and tell me that nobody would ever make me cry again.
Now he was the one standing there while I broke down.
The door eventually closed, and they left me alone.
For the next two days, nobody properly checked my wounds. My ribs hurt badly, and my shoulder was still swollen from the gunshot. I couldn't sleep properly, and every time I moved, pain shot through my body. I stopped calling for help because I didn't want to beg anyone anymore.
Eventually, I became so weak that I could barely stay awake.
Then the ward door opened, and a doctor rushed in with Favio. The doctor examined me and immediately started treating my wounds.
She needs proper care. Her wounds are inflamed, and she's badly dehydrated. She should've been treated earlier.
I didn't look at Favio.
The doctor cleaned my wounds, changed the dressings, and gave me pain medication. After some time, I woke up again and found Favio sitting beside my bed.
He looked at me for a moment before asking quietly, Does it still hurt?
I stared at him and then laughed bitterly. Now you ask?
His brows pulled together. Addy.
You left me here for two days.
I didn't know your condition had gotten this bad.
I looked at him with tears in my eyes. You didn't know because you never checked.
He went quiet.
I wiped my face. I was shot, Favio. I was cut open without anesthesia. I was left bleeding in a mining clinic, and you didn't even come for me.
Isabella said you attacked her.
And you believed her.
She was injured too.
I stared at him. Of course.
Favio sighed. I know you're angry, but stop blaming everything on Isabella. I do care about you, Addy. We've been together for years, and you're still my wife. But Isabella is important to me too."
I looked at him. Important?
Yes.
I laughed quietly through my tears. That used to be me.
He didn't respond.
I lowered my eyes. I don't even know who you are anymore.
Before he could answer, the door opened.
Isabella walked in. She looked completely fine. Her hospital uniform was neat, and her expression was calm. She looked at the doctor beside my bed, then at Favio.
Why did you bring a doctor?
Favio stood up. Adeline's condition got worse.
Isabella frowned. I told you not to waste money on unnecessary treatment.
I looked at her. She wasn't worried about money. She simply didn't want me getting better.
Favio frowned. She's my wife.
Isabella's face changed slightly. I know.
She looked at me. But being your wife doesn't mean she gets to do whatever she wants!
I was too tired to argue. I closed my eyes because I didn't want to hear them anymore. I didn't want to fight anymore. I was done begging Favio to remember the woman he used to love.
If he wanted Isabella, then let him have her.
I just wanted to get strong enough to leave.
Fine! I'm leaving. You stay with your wife. I'm done being called a mistress anyway!"
Favio panicked the moment Isabella turned to leave. He immediately got up and followed her, his voice softer than I'd ever heard it. Isabella, wait. Please don't be angry. Adeline's injuries are still serious, and if she doesn't take her medicine and get proper treatment, she could get worse.
Isabella stopped and slowly looked back at him. There was no concern in her eyes, only irritation.
So what if she gets worse? she asked coldly. Why are you always acting like she's some helpless little girl who needs to be protected? She's the wife of the Don of the Guerrero Syndicate. If she wants to act tough and refuse treatment, then let her deal with the consequences. Maybe she'll finally learn that being your wife doesn't make her untouchable.
Favio lowered his voice. Isabel, that's enough. She's already been through a lot. I'm asking you, please don't make things worse.
She crossed her arms and stared at him. You're taking her side again?
No. I'm just asking you to calm down.
Isabella gave him a long, suspicious look before letting out a dramatic sigh. Fine. I'll forgive you this time. But don't expect me to keep pretending that Adeline is some innocent victim. I'm tired of watching you waste your money on her while she lies around doing nothing.
Favio glanced back at me.
I was still lying on the hospital bed, barely able to move without feeling pain shoot through my ribs and shoulder.
Isabella noticed his hesitation and smiled.
Actually, I have an idea. I need my personal assistant again.
Favio looked at her. Your assistant?
Yes. I have a presentation at the university tomorrow, and I need someone to handle my materials, organize my documents, carry everything I need, and stay with me throughout the presentation. She looked directly at me. Adeline can do it.
Favio hesitated.
Isabella's expression immediately changed.
If you don't want me to forgive you, then forget it. I'll leave, and you can stay here and take care of your precious wife.
Okay, Favio said almost immediately. I'll do whatever you want. Just don't be angry with me.
I closed my eyes.
I didn't even feel surprised anymore.
He had become so different with her. The Favio I knew used to make the entire world wait if I needed him. He would cancel meetings, leave business dinners, and drive across the city just because I had called him. Now he couldn't even bear the thought of Isabella walking away from him while she was upset.
I already knew what would happen if I refused. Isabella would twist the situation until Favio blamed me, and sooner or later, he would threaten me with Angelica's ashes again.
So I didn't argue.
I simply nodded.
...
The next morning, Isabella arrived at the hospital early and took me straight to the university. My ribs still hurt, my shoulder was bandaged, and I could barely walk without feeling dizzy, but she didn't care. The moment we got out of the car, she shoved a large box of presentation materials into my arms.
Carry this.
I stared at the box. Isabella, I can barely stand.
She rolled her eyes. Then don't stand there complaining. Walk.
My shoulder is injured.
And yet somehow you still have enough strength to argue with me. She pushed the box closer to my chest. You're my assistant now. I already told you that I'm giving you another chance, so don't make me regret it. Or should I call Favio and tell him his wife is too useless to help me carry a few papers?
I tightened my arms around the box.
She smiled when I finally took it.
See? You can be obedient when you want to.
I didn't answer.
The university hall was already full when we arrived. Professors, medical students, hospital staff, and several important guests had gathered for Isabella's presentation. She walked confidently toward the center of the stage while I stayed at the back, carrying her extra documents and equipment.
She didn't introduce me.
At one point, one of the professors recognized me.
Isn't that Donna Adeline Guerrero?
Isabella turned toward him with a polite smile.
She works with me.
I lowered my eyes.
How did I end up here?
Six months ago, I had still been sitting beside Favio at business dinners, wearing diamonds he'd given me and watching Angelica run around our home. I had been his wife, the mother of his child, and the woman everyone believed would stand beside him for the rest of our lives.
Now I was standing at the back of a university hall with a bandaged shoulder, carrying another woman's belongings while she stood under the spotlight and accepted everyone's praise.
I stayed quiet because I no longer had the energy to defend myself.
...
When the presentation ended, the entire hall applauded. Isabella looked pleased with herself, soaking in the attention as if she had been born for it.
She walked over to me and handed me another stack of papers.
Put these in the car.
I took them without arguing.
Okay.
She watched me for a moment before smiling. You're learning.
I remained silent.
She tilted her head as if she had suddenly remembered something.
Actually, there's one more thing I need you to do.
I looked at her. What?
Her smile widened.
Come with me.
I followed her because I didn't have much choice. She led me through another building and down a quiet corridor. The farther we walked, the fewer people I saw.
Then I realized where we were going.
The university morgue.
She kept walking.
I need something from inside.
There are staff members who can do that.
I said come with me.
I didn't move.
She turned around and walked back toward me, her expression slowly becoming amused.
What? she asked. You're scared?
I don't feel well.
She laughed under her breath. You haven't felt well since the day you arrived here. Funny how you always seem to remember your injuries whenever I ask you to do something.
My shoulder is still bleeding.
Then don't look at it.
I don't want to go inside.
Isabella stepped closer and lowered her voice.
You know, Adeline, you really are spoiled. You've spent your entire life believing that everyone should protect you because you're Favio's wife. But you're not special here. If I tell you to do something, you do it.
She grabbed my arm and pain shot through my shoulder, and I immediately winced.
Let go.
Instead, she tightened her grip.
Stop acting so fragile. You're embarrassing yourself.
She dragged me toward the morgue.
The moment the door opened, cold air hit my face, and my stomach turned. I instinctively pulled back but she shoved me through the doorway.
You're my assistant. You should be willing to help me.
I turned around, but she was already standing near the entrance with a strange smile on her face.
Isabella, what are you doing?!
She stepped backward. I just wanted to see how brave my new assistant really is.
My heart began pounding.
Don't leave me here.
She laughed.
Why not? You survived the blood road, didn't you? You survived getting shot. You survived your little surgery without anesthesia. Surely you can survive a few hours in a morgue.
Isabella, please.
She reached for the door.
You're always telling everyone how strong you are. Here's your chance to prove it.
Wait!
The door slammed shut.
I ran toward it and grabbed the handle, but it wouldn't open.
Isabella!
I started pounding against the door.
Open the door!
Her laughter came from the other side.
Good luck, Adeline. Maybe the dead will keep you company better than Favio does.
Isabella! Please, open the door!
Try not to scream too much, she called back. Someone might actually think you're helpless.
Then her footsteps disappeared.
I kept banging on the door until my injured shoulder screamed with pain. Eventually, I had no choice but to stop.
I backed away and looked around the room.
It was freezing. The lights were painfully bright, and the smell made my stomach turn. I wrapped my arms around myself and tried to keep my breathing steady, but the fear slowly became too much.
I sat down against the wall, shaking.
I covered my face as tears slipped between my fingers.
I stayed there for hours.
I cried until my throat hurt. I begged Isabella to come back. I begged anyone who might hear me to open the door. I even screamed until my voice became hoarse, but nobody came.
After nearly four hours, I finally heard voices outside.
Is anyone inside?
I immediately forced myself to stand.
Help! Please! I'm here!
The door opened, and two university security guards stared at me in surprise.
Donna Adeline?
I nodded weakly.
Please get me out.
One of them immediately helped me walk outside.
Why were you locked in there?
I couldn't answer.
What was I supposed to say? That my husband's mistress had dragged me into the morgue and locked me inside because she wanted to punish me? That Favio would probably believe Isabella if I told him? That even after everything she had done, he would still find a reason to defend her?
I simply shook my head.
I want to go home.
The guards helped me to the entrance, and I called a car myself.
By the time I reached the villa, I was exhausted. My shoulder was throbbing again, my ribs hurt, and my legs felt so weak that I had to hold onto the railing as I climbed the stairs.
I walked through the front door without saying a word.
That night, I opened Instagram.
Isabella had posted several stories. In the first one, she was sitting across from Favio at an expensive restaurant in Milan, laughing while he poured wine into her glass. In the next, they were inside his private helicopter, and Isabella was filming the view from above the city.
Then I saw the caption.
My future husband makes me so happy. I love you for spoiling me.
I stared at those words for a long time.
Future husband.
I almost laughed. Favio was still my husband, at least on paper, but apparently that didn't matter anymore.
I wiped my eyes and laughed quietly. Good for you, Favio.
I blocked Isabella first, then I blocked Favio. I didn't want to see either of them anymore.
I put my phone down and buried my face in the pillow. I cried until my chest hurt.
I only had to survive a few more days, and then I could finally leave this house and never look back.
...
The next morning, Isabella came into my room and dragged me out again. She said we had somewhere to go for a medical outreach program connected to her hospital training. I was still weak, but I followed because I knew better than to refuse her when Favio had already made it clear what would happen if I disobeyed.
We hadn't even reached the medical outreach site when a black van suddenly cut across the road. Our driver slammed on the brakes, but before I could understand what was happening, several armed men surrounded the car.
The doors were ripped open, and someone grabbed me by the hair and dragged me out.
Get off me!
I fought back, but I was still recovering from my injuries and didn't have enough strength. Isabella was pulled out from the other side, screaming Favio's name as if he could hear her from miles away.
We were forced into another vehicle, and within minutes, we were being driven toward an abandoned dock outside the city.
By the time we arrived, my hands were tied behind my back. The sea stretched out in front of us, dark and rough under the afternoon sky.
A man stood waiting near the edge of the dock.
I recognized him. He was one of Favio's old enemies, a businessman whose company had collapsed after Favio forced him out of several mining contracts years ago. His wife had left him afterward, and he'd spent years blaming Favio for destroying his life.
He looked at Favio when the Guerrero convoy finally arrived.
You remember me, Don Guerrero? he shouted with a bitter laugh. Years ago, you made me choose between saving my company and saving my marriage, and you destroyed both. You took everything from me, so today I'm going to make you make the same choice.
Favio stepped forward, his expression hard. Let them go. This is between you and me.
The man laughed. No. Today, you choose.
He pointed his gun at us.
You only get one woman, Favio. Save one, and the other goes into the sea.
Isabella immediately started crying. Favio, please! Don't leave me here!
I didn't say anything. I just looked at him.
Some part of me already knew what he was going to do. Maybe I'd known the answer for a long time.
The man raised his hand.
One.
Favio looked at Isabella.
Two.
Isabella was sobbing now, calling his name over and over.
I stood there quietly, watching my husband. The man started to raise his hand for the final count, and Favio's face tightened.
Isabella.
There it was.
Of course he chose her. Why had I expected anything different?
The kidnapper grabbed me and shoved me toward the edge of the dock.
Adeline!
Favio shouted my name, but it was too late.
I fell into the sea.
The cold water swallowed me immediately. I couldn't swim. I kicked and struggled, but my clothes dragged me down, and my injured body was already exhausted. I tried to reach the surface, but my lungs were burning, and I could hear nothing except the water rushing around me.
So this was it.
Was I really going to die here after everything?
...
When I opened my eyes again, I was in a hospital room.
My throat was dry, and every part of my body hurt. The first person I saw was Favio. He was sitting beside my bed with his arm wrapped in thick bandages.
The moment he noticed I was awake, he stood. Addy, you're awake. Thank God.
I stared at him. My heart hardened again.
Favio stepped closer. I know what you're thinking, but Isabella was terrified. I had to save her first, and I swear I wasn't going to leave you behind. I went after you the moment I got her somewhere safe.
I looked away.
I don't care.
He frowned. Addy.
I don't care, Favio.
My voice was weak, but I meant every word.
He sat beside me. You nearly died. I got you to the hospital as soon as I could. I stayed until the doctors were sure you were stable.
I looked at him. And?
And what?
What do you want me to say?
He went quiet.
I didn't have anything left to give him.
The nurse eventually came in and checked my condition. She told Favio that his arm needed proper treatment beause of gun shot and that he should rest, so he left after giving the caregiver instructions to stay with me.
...
I was discharged a few days later and returned to the Guerrero villa alone.
The moment I stepped inside, I saw Isabella in the living room.
She looked completely fine.
She glanced at me and immediately frowned. Why were you in the hospital again? Do you know how much time and trouble this causes?
I didn't answer.
She walked closer. Come with me. We have work to do.
She reached for my arm, but I pulled away.
Don't touch me.
My voice was calm.
That seemed to surprise her.
She stared at me. What's wrong with you?
I looked at her for a few seconds before speaking.
Move, or I'll kill you right now. Don't push me, Isabella. I know all your dirty secrets. Once I tell Favio everything, do you really think he'll still treat you like a princess? So move.
For once, Isabella didn't have an immediate answer.
Her face changed, and I could see the anger building in her eyes.
I didn't wait for her response. I walked past her and went upstairs.
That night, I finally slept without waiting for Favio to come home.
But around midnight, the bedroom door was suddenly kicked open.
Favio stood there, his face furious.
Where is Isabella?
I slowly sat up. I don't know.
She isn't in her room.
I looked at him without expression. So?
His eyes narrowed. What did you say to her?
Nothing.
Don't lie to me, Adeline.
I didn't.
He walked toward the bed. She told me you threatened her.
I stared at him. I told her not to bother me.
What else?
I was too tired to fight. I told her that if she kept provoking me, I'd cut off her head and feed it to the dogs. Why?
His face changed instantly.
You!
He grabbed my wrist and pulled me out of bed.
Who gave you the right to threaten Isabella like that? You've already hurt her enough! First, you had your men beat her, then you attacked her at the mining site, and now you're threatening to kill her? Basta! How many times do I have to clean up after you?
I looked at him.
The man standing in front of me was my husband. The man I'd loved for most of my life. Yet I couldn't find even a trace of the boy I used to know.
He tightened his grip.
You're lucky I still call you my wife. The title of Donna Guerrero means nothing if I don't want it to. I gave you that place because I pitied you, but the woman I truly love is Isabella.
You pitied me?
He didn't answer.
I looked at him through my tears. Favio, did you forget who chased me for years? You were the one who followed me everywhere. You were the one who said you couldn't live without me. You were the one who stood in front of the priest and promised you'd stay with me through everything.
His expression stayed cold.
That's the past.
No, I whispered. That's my life.
Guards! Get her!
Two bodyguards came into the room.
Favio didn't even bother looking at me when he gave the order. Take her to the underground cell and strap her to the electric bed. Give her a proper lesson. She needs to understand that she can't keep challenging me and Isabella in this house. Release her when she finally learns to lower her head.
My entire body went cold.
An electric bed?
He really wanted to do this to me?
Favio, how dare you! I struggled against the guards as they grabbed my arms. You can't do this to me! I'm your wife! Let me go!
Favio's expression didn't change. Then start acting like my wife, Addy. I've warned you enough times. I'm done listening to your tantrums.
You're a monster!
One of the guards dragged me toward the door.
I fought them until my injured body couldn't take it anymore. My ribs hurt, my shoulder was still healing, and my legs were barely strong enough to carry me, but they didn't care.
They took me downstairs and strapped me to the metal bed. The restraints were tight around my wrists and ankles.
Then the machine turned on.
Pain tore through my entire body.
I screamed.
My muscles tightened so hard that I couldn't control them. My back lifted from the bed, and every part of me shook against the restraints.
Stop! Please, stop!
Nobody answered.
Another surge hit me, and I screamed until my throat felt raw.
I don't know how long it lasted.
Maybe hours.
Maybe longer.
At first, I fought them. I cursed Favio. I begged the guards to stop. I called his name until I had almost no voice left.
By the time they finally released me, I could barely stand. They dragged me upstairs and left me in the living room.
Isabella was sitting on the sofa beside Favio.
She looked completely comfortable, as if nothing had happened.
Favio glanced at me once.
His expression remained cold.
Isabella looked me over and smiled.
Adeline, since you're finally done causing trouble, I need you to do something for me.
I didn't answer.
She continued, Go to the hospital laboratory and retrieve your kidney.
I slowly looked at her.
My kidney?
Yes. The one they removed from you before Angelica's transplant.
My stomach twisted.
She was talking about the kidney I had given for my daughter.
The kidney that was supposed to save Angelica.
She crossed her legs and spoke casually. The hospital kept it after the investigation. I need it for my research project, and since it belongs to you, you can go get it yourself. I'll return it when I'm finished studying it. Then you can decide what you want to do with it. You can throw it away, or you can bury it beside Angelica.
My fingers curled.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted to throw something at her.
I wanted to ask Favio how he could sit there and let her talk about our daughter's death like it was some school project.
But I was too tired.
My whole body still hurt from the punishment.
So I simply nodded.
Okay.
Isabella raised an eyebrow.
Okay?
Yes.
I looked at her with empty eyes. I'll go get it.
She smiled, clearly pleased.
Good. See? Things are much easier when you cooperate.
I didn't answer.
I turned toward the stairs.
Favio watched me.
Addy.
I stopped but didn't turn around.
Don't cause another scene at the hospital.
My fingers tightened around the railing.
I won't.
Then I walked upstairs.
Once I reached my bedroom, I closed the door behind me and changed into a simple blouse and black pants because I didn't want to walk into the hospital wearing the clothes I'd been tortured in.
I brushed my hair, washed my face, and picked up my handbag.
Then I looked at myself in the mirror.
My face was pale.
My eyes were swollen.
There was a faint bruise around my wrist from the restraints.
I barely recognized myself.
I whispered, It's almost over.
I didn't know whether I was talking to myself or Angelica.
Maybe both.
I picked up my bag, took my daughter's urn, hid it inside the bag, and left the room.
When I came downstairs, Isabella was still sitting beside Favio.
She glanced at me. Ready?
I nodded.
Yes. She smiled. Good. Don't take too long. I need the kidney today.
I looked at her for a moment.
Then I walked straight past her.
I didn't wait for a driver.
I didn't wait for Favio.
I walked out of the villa alone.
The guards at the gate opened it for me, and I stepped onto the street.
I stood there for a moment, breathing in the cold Italian air.
Then I raised my hand and stopped a taxi.
Airport, please.
The driver looked at me through the mirror.
Which airport?
Malpensa.
He nodded and started driving.
I leaned back against the seat and closed my eyes.
The moment the villa disappeared behind me, I opened my handbag and took out my phone.
I looked at the divorce documents I'd kept hidden inside.
The cooling-off period was over.
I had already decided what I was going to do.
I wasn't going back to Favio.
I wasn't going back to that house.
And I wasn't going back to the woman I'd been before.
The taxi stopped at the airport.
I paid the driver, stepped out, and pulled my suitcase behind me and walked into the airport without looking back.
Meanwhile, Favio spent the entire day with Isabella. He didn't think about me.
Why would he?
As far as he knew, I was probably somewhere doing whatever Isabella had ordered me to do.
It wasn't until evening, when dinner was being served, that he finally noticed my absence.
Where's Adeline?
Isabella looked up from her phone.
Maybe she's still at the hospital.
Favio frowned. She should've been back by now.
He took out his phone and called me.
The call didn't connect.
He tried again.
Nothing.
His brows slowly pulled together.
What the hell?
He checked the number and called once more.
This time, the automated voice answered.
The number you have dialed is not in service.
Favio froze.
