The Wife He Betrayed Came Back for Revenge
Riley and Vesper were kidnapped at the same time.
When I finally found them, both of them were lying on the floor, barely conscious. The moment I saw Riley, my blood ran cold.
My five-year-old daughter was shaking badly, her little fingers twitching uncontrollably.
Beside her lay Vesper Pierce, my husbands second-in-command, the woman he trusted more than anyone else.
I knew those symptoms.
A neurotoxin.
Someone had injected both of them with a toxin that was attacking their nervous systems. I rushed to Riley and grabbed her little hand. Riley! Baby, look at Mommy.
Her eyelids fluttered. M-mommy...
Im here! Im here, baby. Keep your eyes open, okay? Dont fall asleep.
I checked her pulse, then looked at Vesper. Vespers condition wasn't serious, and her symptoms were much easier to manage. Riley was different. Her condition was getting worse far too quickly, and if I didnt identify the toxin soon, the damage to her nervous system could become irreversible.
I was a neurologist who specialized in toxins and nerve agents. I had spent years studying poisons that could kill a person without leaving obvious marks. I knew what was happening to Riley, and I knew exactly how little time I had to stop it.
But knowing what to do didn't make this easier.
My daughter was dying in front of me.
I reached for my medical kit, already going through the possible toxins in my head, when Silass voice came from behind me.
Save Vesper first!
My hand stopped.
I slowly turned around.
Silas stood there in his black suit, looking completely calm. Not worried. Not frightened.
The Mafia Don of the Thorne Dynasty. The President of Thorne International. To the world, he was an elegant billionaire who donated millions to museums, childrens hospitals, and the arts.
To me, he was my husband.
Or at least, I thought he was.
I stared at him. What did you just say?
Save Vesper first, he repeated.
I glanced at Riley, whose fingers were still twitching in mine. Silas, Riley is getting worse! Vesper can still be stabilized, but Rileys symptoms are progressing much faster.
His face remained cold. I heard you.
Then you know Riley needs me first.
I said fucking save Vesper!
I clenched Rileys hand. Shes your daughter.
I know.
Then why are you asking me to save someone else first?
Silass eyes hardened. Because Vesper comes first. Im not going to stand here and watch you gamble with her life because youre emotional about Riley.
My heart cracked. Im not being emotional. Im telling you whats happening medically.
And Im telling you what youre going to do.
His tone was so cold that I almost didn't recognize him.
Silas, I dont have time to argue with you. I need to identify the toxin in Rileys system right now. If I wait too long, the neurological damage could become permanent.
Silas stepped closer.
Raven, Im warning you. DO NOT MAKE ME FUCKING FORCE YOU.
I stared at him.
He had never spoken to me like that before.
Then I heard my fathers voice.
Raven!
I turned around, and my heart nearly stopped.
My father was being dragged toward us by two of Silass men. He was already sick and weak, his face pale and his body trembling. He could barely walk without support, yet one of the men shoved him to his knees while another grabbed his hair and forced his head up.
Dad!
I tried to run toward him, but Silas caught my arm.
Dont.
I looked at him in horror. WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!
He glanced at my father as if the sight of him meant absolutely nothing. You still dont understand, do you?
What?
If you dont save Vesper first, my men will beat him.
My face went white. Silas, hes sick!
I know.
Hes your father-in-law!
And?
I stared at him, unable to believe the cruelty in his voice. How can you do this to him?
Silas looked straight into my eyes. Because youre refusing to listen. I dont give a damn if hes sick, old, or dying. If you disobey me, he pays the price.
One of his men raised his fist.
My father immediately curled in on himself, coughing violently.
Raven, dont... he rasped.
Dad!
I looked at Silas with tears filling my eyes. Please. Dont hurt him.
Silas didnt even blink. Save Vesper.
Please, Silas.
You have ten seconds to start treating her.
I froze.
He looked at his watch.
Ten.
My breathing became unsteady.
Nine.
Silas...
Eight.
I looked at Riley.
Her tiny body was trembling harder now.
Seven.
I looked at my father.
He was struggling just to breathe.
Six.
Stop! I cried.
Silas lowered his hand slightly, but his expression remained merciless. Then do what I told you.
I shook my head, tears falling freely. Riley is your daughter. How can you stand there and watch her suffer?
His jaw tightened.
I wont risk Vespers life.
My lips trembled. So youre willing to risk Rileys?
Silas said nothing.
That silence was my answer.
Save Vesper, and your father walks out of here alive. Refuse, and youll watch my men beat him until you decide to cooperate.
I clenched my teeth so hard that I tasted blood.
I hated him!
My voice broke. Ill identify the toxin in Vesper and stabilize her. Then Ill go straight to Riley.
Good, Silas said. Then get your fucking hands moving.
He raised his hand, and his men immediately released my father. My father collapsed onto the floor, coughing and struggling to breathe.
Dad!
He forced himself to look at me. Im okay, Raven.
He wasn't.
He looked like he could barely stay conscious, but I had no time to go to him.
I looked at Riley.
Her little body was still trembling.
M-mommy...
I swallowed my sob and forced myself to move.
Mommys here, baby.
My heart shattered.
I turned toward Vesper and dropped beside her, forcing myself to focus despite the tears blurring my vision. I didn't look at Riley again because I knew if I did, I might lose control and refuse to obey Silas.
Vesper's symptoms were easier to manage, so I gave her the medication I had prepared and worked quickly to stabilize her. I checked her breathing, pulse, and pupils while monitoring the toxin's effects. It took two minutes. Two minutes was all I needed.
The moment Vesper's breathing became steadier, I turned and rushed toward Riley.
Then I froze.
Something had changed.
Riley's breathing was shallow now, and her little body was twitching much harder than before. Her pupils no longer reacted to the light. I immediately dropped beside her and grabbed her hand.
No. Riley, baby, look at Mommy!
Her fingers moved weakly against mine. Mommy, hold me...
Im here, sweetheart. Im here!
I checked her pulse again, and my stomach dropped. The toxin was spreading much faster than it should have. I had already expected the poison to progress, but not at this speed. I started working immediately, trying to identify the toxin from her symptoms while giving her everything I could to slow its effects.
Stay with me, Riley. Please.
Her little body suddenly jerked violently in my hands.
Riley!
She looked at me with half-open eyes. Mommy... it hurts.
My hands shook as I tried another treatment. I know, baby. I know. Just hold on a little longer.
Nothing changed.
Her breathing became weaker.
No, no, no.
I checked her pulse again.
It was fading.
I started CPR immediately, pressing against her tiny chest while trying to keep my voice steady. Come on, Riley. Come back to Mommy.
Nothing.
Come on!
I kept going. I refused to stop even when my arms started hurting. Youre my little girl. You dont get to leave me. Do you hear me?
Her pulse disappeared.
I froze for half a second before checking again.
Nothing.
No...
I started CPR again, tears running down my face as I fought to see through them. Riley, please!
Someone grabbed my shoulder.
Donna, shes gone.
I shoved the person away. No!
I kept pressing against my daughter's chest. Shes not gone. Shes not!
But I already knew.
I was a neurologist. I knew what death looked like. I knew what a body looked like when the nervous system had stopped responding, when the heart had stopped, when there was nothing left to bring back.
And still, I couldn't accept it.
Riley's little body slowly went still in my arms.
My daughter was dead.
She was dead because I had been forced to save Vesper first. She was dead because Silas had decided Vesper's life mattered more.
I stared at Riley's face, unable to move. Baby... Im sorry.
My chest hurt so badly that I couldn't breathe. I held her against me and kept waiting for her to move, to cry, to call me Mommy again.
She didn't.
Everything went black.
...
When I woke up, the first thing I smelled was disinfectant. I opened my eyes slowly and saw the hospital room around me. My body hurt, but I barely noticed. The only thing I could think about was Riley.
I sat up so quickly that the nurse rushed over to stop me. Donna, you need to lie down.
Wheres my daughter?
The nurse went silent.
I pulled myself out of bed and walked into the hallway. I ignored the nurse calling after me and headed toward the nurses' station, but then I heard a familiar voice nearby.
Silas.
I stopped before reaching the corner.
His secretary was speaking quietly. Don Silas, I still dont understand. Vesper has always been the person you care about most. Shes your second-in-command, your closest friend, and the woman youve protected for years. So why did you marry Donna Raven?
I stood behind the wall, completely still.
Silas answered without hesitation. You know how many enemies Ive made in this business. Vesper is my weakness. If my enemies find out how much she means to me, theyll use her against me.
There was a short silence before his secretary asked, So you married Donna to protect Vesper?
Yes.
My fingers tightened around the edge of the wall.
Silas continued in the same calm voice. I never loved Raven. I married her because she was someone I could keep outside my real life. As long as everyone believed she was the woman I loved, nobody would look too closely at Vesper.
I felt something twist inside my chest.
His secretary hesitated before asking, But Donna nearly died too. And Riley was your own daughter.
Silas was silent for a few seconds.
Then he said, We can have more children.
I covered my mouth.
He continued as if he were discussing business. Raven can remain my wife. Her position won't change, and she'll have everything she needs. But my heart has always belonged to Vesper.
A tear slipped down my cheek.
So that was it.
Six years of being his wife. Six years of believing his kisses, his promises, and the quiet moments between us meant something. All along, I had only been a shield.
A convenient wife.
Someone Silas could sacrifice whenever Vesper needed protection and Riley had paid for it.
He had watched me choose Vesper while Riley was dying, knowing exactly what that choice could cost. Then, after Riley died, his only answer was that we could have another child.
How could he say that?
Did he really think another child could replace Riley?
I looked down at my trembling hands and slowly wiped away my tears.
No, I whispered. Never again.
...
I walked to the nurses' station and asked for a phone. There was one number I had kept hidden for six years, a number I had promised myself I would never call unless I had absolutely no other choice.
Now I had no reason to keep that promise.
I dialed.
The call connected after a few rings.
Hello?
I closed my eyes. I agree to your conditions.
There was silence on the other end.
I continued, But I have two requests.
Tell me.
First, I want to know exactly what toxin was injected into my daughter and why Riley's condition progressed so much faster than Vesper's.
My voice shook, but I forced myself to continue. Second, I want Silas Thorne to pay for Riley's death.
The man was silent for several seconds.
Then he answered, Done.
I tightened my grip on the phone.
Ill personally come to Europe and take you away in one month.
Fine.
I ended the call and immediately contacted my lawyer.
Prepare the divorce papers.
I took a slow breath before continuing. I want everything documented. File them as soon as possible.
The ward door suddenly slammed open, and before I could even turn around, Silas pulled me into his arms.
Raven, I know youre hurting, but you can have another child. Rileys death was an accident. The toxin acted too fast, and nobody expected it to progress that quickly.
His voice was gentle, almost comforting. It was the same voice I had fallen in love with years ago.
Now it made me sick.
All I could hear was Rileys weak voice in my head.
Mommy, it hurts.
I shoved Silas away so hard that he took a step back. Dont touch me!
He froze.
I stared at him with swollen eyes. That wasnt an accident, Silas. It was murder.
His expression changed slightly. You dont mean that.
I do. My voice shook, but I refused to look away. Riley was getting worse, and I told you I needed to treat her first. You forced me to save Vesper while our daughter was dying. Her own father took away the only chance she had!
Silas reached for my hand, but I pulled it away before he could touch me.
Raven, I know youre angry. Youre grieving, and I understand that you blame me, but I never wanted Riley to die.
Then why did you make me choose?
He went quiet.
Instead of answering, Silas straightened his suit and spoke as though we were discussing a business settlement. Ive already arranged for fifty percent of my assets to be transferred to your name. You wont have to worry about money for the rest of your life.
I stared at him in disbelief. Fifty percent?
He nodded. As compensation.
A bitter laugh escaped me.
Compensation? Tears filled my eyes again. Youre giving me money for my daughter?
Raven...
Is that what Rileys life is worth to you? My voice broke. How much is she worth, Silas? Ten million? A hundred million? Half of Thorne International?
Silas looked away.
That was enough of an answer.
I wiped my tears with the back of my hand. I dont want your money.
I couldn't believe this was the same man who had once begged me to marry him.
When I was nineteen, I went overseas to work with a military medical unit. Later, I specialized in toxins and nerve agents. By twenty-three, I had become one of the youngest specialists in my field.
Then I met Silas.
A rival mafia family had poisoned him during a charity gala. Someone had slipped a deadly neurotoxin into his drink, and by the time his men realized what had happened, he was already losing consciousness.
Nobody wanted to touch the case.
He was the Don of the Thorne Dynasty. Treating him meant getting involved in a mafia war, and nobody wanted that responsibility.
I stepped forward anyway.
I identified the toxin, treated him, and kept him alive until the antidote arrived.
After that, Silas started pursuing me relentlessly.
He showed up at my hospital. He sent flowers. He waited outside my office. He found excuses to see me even when I refused to meet him.
At the charity gala where he finally proposed, he stood in front of hundreds of people and told them I was the only woman he wanted.
I believed him.
I actually believed him.
Now, every memory felt like a lie.
The ward door opened again, and Vesper walked inside. Her eyes were red, and she looked like she had been crying. The moment she saw Silas, she hurried toward him and grabbed his arm.
Silas...
Her voice trembled.
Silas immediately looked at her. What happened?
Nothing. Im okay.
Vesper wiped her tears and glanced at me before quickly lowering her eyes. Its just that people outside are saying things.
Silas frowned. What things?
Theyre saying Raven only saved me because you forced her to. She swallowed, letting another tear roll down her cheek. And theyre saying Riley died because I was more important to you.
I stared at her.
She looked frightened. Innocent. Completely harmless. If I didn't know what I knew now, I might have believed her.
Vesper tightened her grip on Silass sleeve. Silas, please dont fight with Raven because of me. Shes already lost her daughter. She doesnt need more trouble.
Silas held her closer before looking at me.
Raven, Ill arrange a press conference.
I frowned. What?
Youll explain what happened yourself. Youll tell everyone that you chose to treat Vesper first because you believed you could stabilize Riley afterward.
My stomach turned. Huh! You want me to lie?
Im asking you to clarify the situation.
You mean you want me to take the blame.
Silass expression hardened. Riley died because the toxin progressed faster than expected and your treatment failed. Thats the truth.
I stared at him.
You were the one who forced me to treat Vesper first.
His eyes turned cold. And nobody needs to know that.
My hands curled into fists. So you killed my daughter, and now you want me to tell everyone it was my fault?! Huh!
Raven, watch your words.
No! You watch yours!
I stepped closer to him, no longer caring that Vesper was standing beside him.
For the first time, genuine anger appeared in Silass eyes. Before he could speak, Vesper caught his arm.
Silas, please. Her voice was soft and careful. Dont make things worse. Its okay. I can handle whatever people say about me. She turned toward me, tears filling her eyes. Raven, Im sorry. I never wanted any of this to happen.
I almost laughed.
She was good, really good.
Then Silas reached into his coat and pulled out several photographs. He placed them on the table in front of me.
My blood ran cold.
It was my father.
Two of Silass men had him pinned down. His face was terrified, and his body was shaking badly.
Silas...
He looked at me calmly. You wouldnt want these pictures spreading around Europe, would you?
I stared at the photographs. You threatened my father too?
Im giving you a choice.
Hes sick!
I know.
He has PTSD. He could barely survive what your men already did to him!
Silas didn't even blink. Then dont make me hurt him again.
My eyes burned with tears.
The child is already dead. My voice cracked. Riley is dead. What else do you want from me?
Silas stepped closer.
I want you to protect Vesper.
I stared at him in disbelief. Even now?
Yes.
A bitter laugh escaped me. Why?
He didn't answer.
I looked at Vesper. She was still standing close to Silas, looking frightened and innocent.
But now I could see it, the tiny smile she tried to hide.
Youve already taken Riley from me. But youre not going to take my dignity too.
Silas lifted the photographs between us.
Then its your choice, Raven.
I stared at the pictures of my father, then at the man who had once promised to protect me.
Just then, my phone went off. It was a message from my friend.
[Raven, your father had another severe PTSD episode. The doctor said he can't handle any more stress. If he's exposed to another major shock, it could seriously affect his mental state.]
I stared at the message for a long time. My father had been a former Air Force officer, and he had already survived things most people could never imagine. Over the years, everything he had been through had taken its toll, and his PTSD had become worse. Now Silas had used him to control me, and I knew exactly what another shock could do to him.
I slowly lowered my hands.
What else could I do? Silas had my father in his hands. Riley was already dead, and now I had to protect the only family I had left.
I nodded quietly. Fine.
Silas looked at me.
Ill do it, my voice empty. Ill take all the blame. Ill tell everyone Riley died because of my mistake. Ill say I misjudged the toxin and failed to save my own daughter.
Only then did Silas seem satisfied. He reached out and gently stroked my hair. Raven, youre such a good girl.
My stomach turned.
I wanted to slap his hand away, but I didn't. I simply stood there and let him touch me as if I were still the obedient wife he had married.
A few seconds later, my lawyer entered the ward carrying the divorce papers. I took them from him and handed them straight to Silas.
Sign.
Silas looked down at the papers. You really want to do this now?
Yes. I stared directly into his eyes. You promised me fifty percent of your assets. Put it in writing.
He didn't hesitate. He picked up the pen and signed every document.
Happy now?
I took the papers back and looked at his signature. No. Not even close.
My lawyer checked the documents before looking at me. Donna Raven, once the application is approved by the authorities, the entire appliction process should take around thirty days.
Thirty days. I nodded. Fine.
Silas remained beside me, watching us. For a brief moment, I saw something flash across his face.
Panic.
It disappeared almost immediately.
He probably thought I was doing this because I was angry.
...
Soon, I was taken to the press conference. I was still wearing a hospital gown, and my body was weak, but I forced myself to stand straight. I had appeared in front of reporters many times before. I'd been praised for my work overseas and called a genius in my field. Now I was standing in front of those same cameras as the woman accused of killing her own daughter.
I took the microphone.
Hello. Im Raven St. Clair.
My hands were shaking, so I clenched them into fists until my nails dug into my palms.
It was my mistake. I failed to identify the toxin in time, and my misjudgment caused the treatment to fail.
I swallowed hard.
Riley died because I failed to save her.
The moment I finished speaking, the reporters erupted.
Youre supposed to be a genius who trained overseas, yet you couldnt even save your own daughter!
People like you shouldnt be trusted with patients or rescue operations!
What kind of doctor lets her own child die?
All those awards were probably just luck!
Someone shouted from the crowd, Get out of the medical field! You dont deserve those honors!
I stood there and took every word.
I didn't defend myself because Silas had my father, and I had promised.
It turned out falling from the top didn't take years. Sometimes it took one day, one lie, and one man deciding that your life was worth sacrificing.
Then an egg flew through the air and struck my forehead.
It cracked against my skin, and the yolk slowly ran down my face.
Get out of here!
Someone screamed, People like you dont deserve to live!
My chest tightened as I fought back the urge to scream.
Then my phone buzzed.
I looked down.
Another message from my friend appeared.
[Raven, something terrible happened. Someone spread the photos of your father being humiliated all over the city! He saw them. His PTSD got much worse, and he's on the hospital rooftop. He's threatening to jump.]
My ears started ringing.
What?
I didn't wait for anyone to respond. I ran.
I didn't care about the reporters, the cameras, or the people still screaming behind me. I ran straight back to the hospital, desperate to reach my father before Silas's cruelty cost me another person I loved.
When I reached the rooftop, a crowd had already gathered below.
And there he was, my father was sitting on the edge of the roof. His face was empty. He looked like he had finally run out of strength.
People below were shouting at him.
Jump already!
Youre just pretending!
Former Air Force officer? What a disgrace!
Look at the pictures! So much for being respectable!
Someone laughed. Your daughter killed her own child, and now youre pretending to be a victim?
Another person shouted, Maybe Raven learned it from you! Who knows what kind of family you people really are?
My blood boiled.
Shut the fuck up!
I screamed at them. All of you, shut up!
Nobody listened. They kept shouting, but my father didn't react. He simply sat there, staring at nothing.
My heart broke.
Dad...
I slowly walked toward him.
He didn't look at me.
Dad, its me.
His fingers trembled.
I stopped a few steps away, careful not to frighten him.
Please dont move.
He finally looked at me. His eyes were filled with fear and exhaustion. Raven...
Yes. Im here.
He looked down at the ground.
I dont want to be here anymore.
My heart dropped.
No. I shook my head. Dont say that!
I slowly lowered myself to the ground, keeping several steps between us.
Ive already lost Riley. My voice cracked. I cant lose you too.
He looked away.
Im so tired, Raven.
I know. Tears blurred my vision. I know youre tired, Dad, but please come back to me.
I held out my hand.
Just take my hand. You dont have to think about anything else.
He stared at my hand but didn't move.
I kept it there.
Please.
My voice softened as I tried to keep myself from breaking down. Youve survived everything before this. You survived the Air Force. You survived your illness. You survived your PTSD. You survived the people who hurt you.
I took a shaky breath.
So survive this too.
Tears finally rolled down my cheeks.
Because if you leave me now, Dad, Ill really have no one.
I kept my hand extended toward him.
Please come home with me.
My father looked at me, and somehow, he still managed to smile. Raven, Im sorry.
I shook my head as I moved closer to him. Dont say that, Dad.
His eyes were empty, and his voice trembled when he spoke. If you hadnt come to save me, you wouldnt have been forced to leave Riley. You wouldnt have had to choose Vesper first. Riley died because of me. I caused this. Im the reason you lost your daughter.
No. I stepped closer and held out my hand. That wasnt your fault. Silas did this. He forced me to choose, and he threatened you.
Dad slowly shook his head. Im tired, Raven. Im tired of being afraid. Im tired of waking up from nightmares. Im tired of feeling like Im a burden to you.
Youre not a burden. My voice broke as I reached for him. You hear me? Youre my father. Ill take care of you.
He smiled again, but something in his eyes made my heart sink.
Raven, I love you.
Dad...
He slowly stood.
Please dont...
He opened his arms as if he wanted to hug me. Im going to see Riley.
My blood ran cold.
No!
Ill apologize to her for you.
Dad, stop!
He took one step back, then another.
Please!
I rushed forward, but it was already too late.
He jumped.
DAD!
I ran to the edge and screamed his name until my throat hurt. When I looked down, I saw him lying motionless below.
My father.
My last family.
Gone.
No...
My legs gave out beneath me. I couldn't breathe, couldn't think, and couldn't even cry. I had already lost Riley, and now I had lost him too. Why did everyone I loved keep dying because of Silas?
I turned toward the stairs without knowing where I was going. I wanted to follow my father. I didn't care anymore. But before I could take another step, someone grabbed me from behind.
Raven!
Silas wrapped his arms around me, but I fought against him immediately. Let me go!
Raven, stop! Your father is gone. You cant do this to yourself too!
Let me go! You fucking bastard!
He held me tighter, so I turned and bit his arm as hard as I could. Silas grunted, but he still didn't release me.
I have nobody left! I screamed in his face. Do you hear me? I have nobody!
My tears finally came as I fought against him. Riley is dead. My father is dead. And its all because of you! You monster!
Silas stared at me. Raven...
Why? I hit his chest with both hands. Why are you doing this to me?
He didn't answer.
I kept hitting him until my arms had no strength left. Then everything went black.
...
I didn't know how I got home. When I opened my eyes again, Silas was sitting beside me. The moment he saw me awake, he pulled me into his arms, but I immediately pushed him away.
Dont.
His hand froze.
The pictures of your father were leaked by accident, he said. I never wanted that to happen.
I stared at him in disbelief. An accident?
My voice shook with anger.
Do you know what your little accidents have cost me?
Silas went quiet.
My voice cracked as I asked, How many people have to die before you stop calling everything an accident?
Silas's face tightened.
He reached for my hand. Raven, Ill take care of everything. Ill give Riley and your father proper funerals. Ill make sure theyre buried with respect.
I pulled my hand away. They dont need your respect! They needed you to protect them when they were alive.
...
The next morning, I went downstairs because I wanted to personally take Riley and my father's ashes to the cemetery. I had barely reached the dining room when I stopped.
Vesper was sitting at the table, calmly feeding a small tortoise. Beside her was a white porcelain container, and something about it immediately made my stomach twist.
I walked closer. What are you feeding it?
Vesper looked up and smiled. Oh, this? Silas said my tortoise wasnt getting enough calcium, so he had some bones ground into powder for it.
My eyes moved to the container.
Then I saw the two urns beside it.
My blood ran cold.
No!
I grabbed the container, my hands shaking violently. Where are Rileys ashes?
Vesper immediately looked toward Silas. Silas...
Silas walked over. What happened?
I pointed at the container. You fucking ask her.
Vesper's eyes filled with tears. I really dont know what shes talking about. I was just feeding my tortoise.
I stared at her. You knew.
I didnt.
You knew exactly what you were doing!
I couldn't control my anger anymore. Riley was dead. My father was dead. And now their ashes were being treated like nothing.
I raised my hand. You disgusting liar!
Before I could reach Vesper, Silas shoved me away.
My back slammed against the coffee table, and pain shot through my body.
I looked at him in disbelief.
He was standing between me and Vesper, his expression cold.
Raven, enough.
I slowly pushed myself back up. Move.
No.
I said move.
Ive tolerated your behavior because youre grieving, but youre going too far now.
I pointed at the container, my hands still trembling. Silas, look at me.
He didn't answer.
Look me in the eyes and tell me what was in that container.
His jaw tightened. Raven...
What was in it?
Vesper quietly stepped behind him and grabbed his arm. Silas, please dont fight with her because of me. I really didnt know. I thought it was just calcium powder. I would never do something like that to Riley's ashes.
I looked at her.
I wanted to tear that innocent expression off her face.
You knew.
Vesper shook her head. I didnt.
Silas pulled her closer and looked at me. Vesper didnt know what was inside the container.
I let out a broken laugh. So you believe her?
Yes.
And you dont even care enough to check?
His expression hardened. Youre the one who tried to hit her.
Because she was feeding an animal with something that could have been Rileys ashes!
You have no proof.
Proof? My voice rose as tears filled my eyes. Riley is dead, Silas! My father is dead! And now their ashes are being treated like garbage in your house, and youre standing there asking me for proof?
Silas's face darkened.
Apologize to Vesper.
I shook my head. Im not apologizing.
Raven.
No. I wiped the tears from my face. Im not the one who should be sorry.
Silas stared at me for a long moment before slowly raising his hand.
Several men immediately stepped forward.
His voice was calm, but there was no room to argue. If Donna refuses to admit her mistake, she can kneel outside.
My eyes widened. What?
She can stay there until she understands what she did wrong.
Two of Silass men immediately came up behind me and grabbed my arms. I looked at Silas in disbelief, unable to understand how cold he could be after everything that had happened.
Youre really doing this?
He didn't even bother looking at me.
Silas, you actually want me to kneel and apologize for trying to protect Rileys ashes? For Vesper, the woman you chose over our daughter?
He said nothing. Instead, he turned and walked upstairs with Vesper beside him, leaving me on the floor as if I were nothing more than an inconvenience.
Vesper glanced back at me, her expression carefully arranged into innocent concern. Silas, maybe you shouldnt be angry with Raven anymore.
Her voice was sweet, but I knew that tone. Vesper had spent years standing at Silass right hand as his second-in-command. She knew exactly how to manipulate him, and she knew exactly how to look harmless while doing it.
Silass expression immediately softened when he looked at her. Dont worry about her. Come on. I bought something new for your tortoise. Ill show it to you.
Vesper smiled and slipped her arm through his. Okay, Silas. I just hate seeing you upset because of me.
I watched them disappear upstairs together.
My chest felt completely empty.
So that was it?
One of the men grabbed my arm and dragged me toward the front door. I dug my heels into the floor and refused to cooperate.
I said I wont.
The soldier kicked the back of my knee, and pain shot through my leg as I fell hard onto the cold ground. I sucked in a sharp breath, then forced myself upright and straightened my back.
Fine.
If Silas wanted me to kneel, I would kneel.
But I would never bow my head to him.
The cold air cut through my clothes as the hours passed. I stayed there with my knees pressed against the stone, my body still weak from the toxin exposure, but I refused to move. I kept my back straight even when the pain became unbearable.
The front door finally opened.
I looked up and saw Vesper walking out with Silas. She was holding her little tortoise and smiling as though nothing had happened.
She stopped in front of me.
Raven. I know youre still upset, but I really dont want you and Silas to keep fighting.
I didn't answer.
Vesper crouched slightly, holding the tortoise closer to her chest. My tortoises birthday is today, and I wanted to do something nice for him.
She looked at Silas and gave him a small smile. Silas said Donna knows how to handle dangerous chemicals and explosives, so maybe she could help us with the celebration.
I stared at her.
You want me to celebrate your tortoises birthday?
She nodded, looking almost embarrassed. I know it sounds silly, but I thought maybe doing something normal would help everyone calm down. I mean, Im grieving too.
I almost laughed.
Vesper had been Silass second-in-command for years. She had ordered killings, handled weapons, negotiated with rival families, and stood beside him during some of the bloodiest conflicts in the mafia world.
Yet now she was pretending to be too innocent to understand why celebrating a tortoises birthday seven days after Rileys death was cruel.
Silas finally looked at me.
Vesper is being kind. Shes willing to let what happened today go if you help her with the celebration.
Im sorry, Raven. I didnt mean to hurt you.
Then she glanced at Silas as if silently asking him to protect her.
Silass expression hardened. Raven, this isnt a discussion.
I stared at him.
You really dont care, do you?
Rileys and your fathers ashes havent been buried yet. Dont make me deal with another accident.
My heart stopped.
He was threatening me again.
My strength finally left me. I lowered my head and pushed myself off the ground.
Fine. I looked at Vesper. Ill do it.
Vesper's smile immediately returned.
Thank you, Raven! I knew youd understand.
I stared at her fake smile.
Dont thank me. Im doing it for Riley.
Vesper's smile faltered for half a second before she turned toward the garden.
...
The entire area had been prepared for the celebration. Lights hung from the trees, decorations covered the tables, and a large electrical display had been arranged in the shape of a heart.
It was almost cruel.
My daughter had been dead for seven days, and I was standing in the middle of a birthday celebration for a tortoise.
I walked toward the control panel, intending to finish whatever Silas had ordered me to do so I could leave.
Then I stopped.
Something was wrong.
The wiring didn't look right.
The main power cable had been connected incorrectly, and there was another wire hidden underneath the panel.
I crouched down and examined it more closely.
What is this?
Before I could touch it, Vespers tortoise suddenly crawled toward my feet. I instinctively moved back, and my hand struck the control switch.
The lights flashed.
For one second, everything went completely silent.
Then the entire setup exploded.
Ah!
The blast threw me backward. My ears rang as smoke filled my lungs, and pain tore through my body. I tried to stand, but my legs refused to move.
Someone was screaming.
Then I heard footsteps running toward me.
Raven!
Silas.
For the first time, his voice sounded terrified.
He rushed through the smoke and grabbed me, pulling me into his arms.
Raven! Look at me!
I could barely keep my eyes open. He held me tightly, his hands shaking as he looked over my injuries.
Im sorry. Im so fucking sorry. I didnt know this would happen.
I stared at him through the smoke.
For one second, I wanted to laugh. Instead, tears slipped down my face. I weakly pushed against his chest.
Dont...
He tightened his arms around me. Raven, please.
I closed my eyes. If I could go back five years, I would make one different choice.
I wouldn't save him.
I wouldn't marry him.
I wouldn't fall in love with him.
And most of all, I would never let Silas Thorne become the man who destroyed everything I had.
Silas... My voice was barely a whisper as I looked at him one last time. If I could choose again, Id rather I had never met you.
When I opened my eyes, everything looked black and white. I blinked several times, hoping my vision was simply blurred from the explosion, but nothing changed.
What...?
I hurriedly tried to sit up, but Silas immediately got off the sofa and rushed toward me. Raven, dont move.
He held my shoulders and helped me sit back against the pillows. Your eyes were injured in the explosion. The doctors said your optic nerves were damaged. You can still see, but you cant see colors anymore.
I froze as I looked around the room. The curtains were gray, the walls were gray, and even Silass black suit seemed almost the same shade as everything else.
What?
I raised my trembling hands to my face and blinked repeatedly, but there was still no color anywhere. Tears filled my eyes as I realized what had happened. These were the same eyes that had once allowed me to identify tiny differences in toxins and recognize the smallest details during medical procedures. Now I couldn't even tell red from blue.
Silas pulled me into his arms. Raven, dont cry. Well find a way to treat your eyes. Ill bring in the best specialists in Europe if I have to.
I remained silent.
He held me tighter before adding, Ive also arranged everything for Riley and your fathers burial. Their ashes have been buried properly, so you dont have to worry anymore.
The hatred inside me came rushing back the moment I heard their names. I wanted to scream at him. I wanted to ask him why he had done this to us, but I couldn't get a single word out.
Silas probably thought I was too devastated to speak.
He had no idea.
I wasn't crying because I was helpless.
I was crying because I hated him.
...
I stayed in the hospital for another week before the doctors finally allowed me to leave. The first thing I did after being discharged was go to the cemetery. I needed to see Riley. I needed to see Dad.
I took a taxi there, and a light rain started falling as soon as I stepped out. I walked slowly through the cemetery, ignoring the pain that still lingered in my body until I suddenly stopped.
Several men were digging in front of the graves.
For a moment, I couldn't understand what I was seeing. Then I noticed the broken urn lying on the ground.
My heart stopped.
No...
I rushed forward. What are you doing?
The men were digging up Rileys grave and my fathers grave. My fathers urn had already been broken, and pieces of it were scattered across the wet ground.
I dropped to my knees and gathered what remained. What right do you have to do this?!
One of the men looked at me impatiently. Miss Pierce chose these two spots.
I stared at him. Miss Pierce?
Yes. Don Silas ordered us to clear the graves because Miss Pierce wants to bury her tortoise here.
My whole body went cold.
Silas.
Even after Riley and Dad were dead, he still wouldn't leave them alone.
Why? My voice shook as I looked at the men. Why wont you just leave them alone?
The man ignored me and raised his shovel.
I immediately threw myself over the urn.
Dont!
The shovel came down and struck my back. Pain exploded through my body, and I collapsed over the broken urn as blood began soaking through my clothes. I barely noticed the pain. All I could think about was protecting what remained of my daughter.
Dont touch them! I cried as I held Rileys ashes against my chest. Theyre already dead!
The man raised the shovel again, but a cold voice suddenly came from behind us.
What the hell are you doing?
Everyone stopped.
I slowly turned my head and saw Silas standing there. His eyes immediately fell on me, covered in blood and clutching the broken urn. For a brief moment, something resembling pity crossed his face.
Silas... My voice broke. Theyre already dead.
I tightened my arms around the urn. Why wont you let them go?
He opened his mouth, but before he could answer, Vesper hurried over and took his hand.
Silas... Her voice trembled as she looked at the broken urn. Its my fault.
She looked at me with tears gathering in her eyes. My tortoise died during yesterday, and Silas told me I could choose a place to bury it. I thought these were abandoned graves. I honestly didn't know they belonged to Riley and your father.
Vesper stepped closer and extended her hand toward me. Raven, I'm really sorry. I never wanted this to happen. Please dont blame Silas. This was my mistake.
I stared at her hand before looking at Silas.
He was still holding hers.
I slowly pushed myself to my feet despite the pain.
Dont touch me!
Vesper immediately pulled her hand back and lowered her eyes. Im sorry. I was only trying to help.
Stop pretending.
Her expression changed for half a second before she quickly put the innocent look back on her face.
What?
You heard me.
I pointed at the broken urn in my arms. Youve already taken everything from me, so what else do you want?
Silass expression darkened. Raven, thats fucking enough
I let out a bitter laugh. No, Silas. It isnt enough for you, is it?! I looked at Vesper first. First, you took my daughter. Then I turned back to Silas. Then you took my father.
I looked down at the broken urn in my arms before meeting his eyes again.
And now youre taking their graves too?! Rain ran down my face, mixing with the tears I couldn't stop. Tell me, Silas. When will you finally be satisfied?
Looking at Vespers fake, innocent expression, I felt nothing but hatred. I had seen that face too many times, always perfectly soft and harmless whenever Silas was watching.
I dont need your act, Vesper.
She blinked at me, then lowered her eyes as if I had genuinely hurt her. I dont know what you mean, Raven. I really didnt know those were your familys graves.
Stop pretending.
I stepped toward her, but before I could even touch her, Vesper suddenly stumbled backward.
Ah!
She was about to fall into the mud when Silas immediately caught her and pulled her into his arms. His eyes turned cold as he looked at me.
Raven, she didnt mean to do anything. Why the hell are you being so aggressive with her?
I stared at him in disbelief.
Didnt mean to?
I pointed at the broken urn still clutched against my chest. How does one innocent mistake end with my daughters grave being dug up? How does it end with my fathers ashes being thrown around?
Vesper leaned against Silas, tears gathering in her eyes. My tortoise wasnt just an animal, Raven. He was my family. He was like my baby. I never would have asked anyone to hurt Riley or your father.
She made herself look like the victim while Silas looked at me as if I were some cruel woman attacking a helpless girl. Then he turned toward me.
Its just a cemetery, Raven.
I froze.
He continued without a trace of emotion. Your father is already dead. Wherever you bury his ashes wont change anything.
I stared at him. Are you seriously saying that?
His expression didn't change. What else do you want me to say? Raven, youre too emotional right now. Its only a cemetery. Dont turn this into something bigger than it is. Vesper wants this plot, so give it to her.
My eyes widened.
No.
I rushed forward. You cant do this!
Two of Silass men immediately grabbed me and forced me down.
Let me go!
I fought against them, but they held me tightly.
Silas!
He didn't even turn around.
Please!
Thunder rolled above us, and I could barely tell the rain from my tears.
Silas, please!
He simply turned away and walked off with Vesper.
Vesper looked back once. For a brief second, the tears disappeared from her face.
She smiled.
It was tiny.
Satisfied.
Then she turned and followed Silas.
...
I didn't know how I got home. The moment I arrived, I collapsed with a high fever and remained in bed for several days. When I finally felt strong enough to stand, I decided to get my passport.
I was leaving.
I didn't care where I went. I just knew I couldn't stay beside Silas anymore.
But when I reached the front door, I saw Silas and Vesper returning from outside.
Vesper noticed me first and immediately put on that sweet expression.
Raven!
She walked toward me and gently reached for my hand. You look much better. I was so worried about you.
I pulled my hand away.
She pretended not to notice.
Theres a charity gala tonight, and Silas is attending. Why dont you come with us?
Ive got somewhere to be.
Silas reached over and caught my hand before I could leave.
Come with us.
I looked at him. I dont want to.
Vesper quickly stepped in, her expression filled with concern. Please, Raven. I dont want you staying home alone after everything thats happened. Id feel much better if you came with us.
I knew it was an act.
But I didn't want another fight, so I nodded.
Fine.
The charity gala was already crowded when we arrived. The moment Silas stepped inside with Vesper and me, whispers immediately spread through the room.
Isnt that Vesper Pierce?
The woman whos been in love with Silas for years?
I heard Silas only married Raven because he needed a cover for Vesper.
Exactly. His enemies knew Vesper was his weakness, so he married Raven to make everyone believe she was the woman he loved.
Then Raven was just a shield?
Thats what I heard. Silas wanted his enemies to think Raven was his highest priority so nobody would target Vesper.
Poor Raven. She probably thought she actually married for love.
I heard Vesper is Silass highest treasure.
My cousin works for the Thorne family. She said Silas would burn half of Europe to protect that woman.
I heard hed burn the whole damn world for her.
Then why did he marry Raven?
Because Raven was useful. Shes a specialist in toxins. Silas was poisoned years ago, remember? She saved his life. And after that, he married her to keep Vesper safe.
The whispers followed us deeper into the ballroom.
I kept walking as if I hadn't heard any of it.
But every word cut deeper than the last.
Vesper seemed to enjoy the attention. She stayed close to Silas, occasionally lowering her eyes whenever someone looked at her, playing the innocent woman who had never asked for any of this.
Silas didn't correct a single rumor.
He didn't defend me.
He didn't deny that I had only been his shield.
That silence told me everything.
The charity gala began with an auction, and I barely paid attention. My mind was already somewhere else. I was waiting for an opportunity to leave when Vesper suddenly reached over and caught my hand.
Raven, wait.
I looked at her. Im leaving.
She smiled sweetly. Not yet. Youll want to see the next item.
I frowned. Why?
She didn't answer.
The auctioneer stepped onto the stage as several staff members brought out a large display case. Our next item is a collection of military memorabilia.
I looked up, and then I froze.
A service dog tag lay inside the case beside several military medals. My blood ran cold the moment I recognized them. They belonged to my father. His military service, his achievements, his entire life were represented by those medals and that dog tag. They were everything he had earned before PTSD slowly took away the life he once had.
I couldn't breathe.
Vesper leaned closer to my ear, her sweet smile never leaving her face. Recognize them?
I slowly turned toward her. What did you do?
She gave a small, innocent shrug, as if she had no idea why I was upset. Your father left behind some very interesting things. And now theyre being auctioned off.
My hands started shaking.
Vesper...
She tilted her head and widened her eyes. I thought youd be happy. Theyre just old medals, right?
I stared at her.
Those weren't just medals. They were my fathers entire life.
The auctioneer raised his voice as the guests began preparing their bids. The starting bid is one hundred thousand euros.
The room immediately filled with voices as bidding cards went up. I barely heard any of them. All I could see was my fathers name engraved on the dog tag.
Then Vesper suddenly slipped her hand into Silass.
Silas, I want those.
She looked up at him with a sweet smile. Id like to keep them somewhere safe. Maybe I can donate them later in memory of Riley.
I stared at her in disbelief.
She was using Rileys name now too.
Silas smiled faintly and pinched her cheek. If thats what you want.
He raised his bidding card.
Two hundred thousand.
My blood boiled. I grabbed Vespers wrist.
Vesper.
She turned toward me with wide, innocent eyes. Yes?
I tightened my grip.
How dare you?
Vesper looked at me with those innocent eyes, but her words cut straight through me. If you hadn't tried so hard to protect your father's reputation, Riley wouldn't have died.
I froze.
She smiled softly, almost sympathetically, as if she were saying something meant to comfort me. I'm only trying to do something good for him now. Those medals and his service dog tag deserve to be honored. I thought buying them and keeping them would be a nice way to remember him, and maybe I could even dedicate them to Riley.
I wanted to tear that smile off her face.
You don't get to talk about my father.
I raised my hand, but before I could touch her, something slammed into me. I hit the steps hard, pain shooting through my back as the entire room erupted in shocked gasps.
Vesper immediately stumbled into Silas's arms, looking terrified as tears filled her eyes. S-Silas, I didn't do anything. I just wanted to talk to Raven. If she wanted the medals, she could've told me. Why did she try to hit me?
Silas looked at me, his face turning cold. Raven, what the hell happened to you?
I stared at him in disbelief. What happened to me?
His voice hardened. You're actually attacking Vesper in front of everyone now?
The people around us began whispering, their voices growing louder as they watched me from a safe distance.
Isn't that Raven? The neurologist who used to work with toxins and nerve agents?
She's the one who lost her daughter, right?
She looks completely unstable.
Imagine being married to Don Thorne and acting like this in public.
Every word hit me, but I kept my eyes on Silas. He didn't look worried about me. He looked embarrassed.
Get her out of here, he ordered before turning his cold gaze back to me. Raven, leave before you make an even bigger scene.
I clenched my fists. I don't care what they think.
My eyes moved toward the display on the stage, where my father's service medals and dog tag were still being held.
I looked back at Silas. Do you know what those are?
Silas barely glanced at the display. Whatever they are, Vesper wants them.
His voice was cold and final. So I'll get them for her.
My chest tightened. Silas!
He raised his bidding card without hesitation. I'll pay whatever it takes.
The auctioneer announced another bid, but I stepped toward Silas instead. Silas, that's my father's!
He ignored me. Two hundred thousand.
I swallowed hard. Please.
He finally looked at me, and there wasn't even a trace of the man I'd married in his eyes. You don't deserve them.
Those words destroyed me.
I couldn't breathe. My knees gave out, and I dropped to the floor in front of him. Everyone was staring, but I didn't care anymore.
Please give them to me. I'll pay you back. I'll give you anything. Just don't give them to her.
Silas stared down at me, and for a second, I thought I saw surprise in his eyes. Then it disappeared.
He walked toward the stage.
The auctioneer handed him the medals and dog tag. Silas turned around and walked straight toward me, and my eyes immediately fell on the things in his hand.
My father's name was right there.
Tears filled my eyes.
Then Silas walked right past me.
He stopped in front of Vesper and placed the medals and dog tag into her hands.
Vesper looked surprised, almost touched. Silas...
He smiled at her. It's yours.
My heart broke.
I sat there on the floor, staring at them. My father's last possessions. My family's memories. Everything that belonged to the people I'd lost was being handed to the woman Silas had chosen over us.
I finally understood.
Love really was that simple. If someone loved you, you knew. And if they didn't, you knew even faster.
Silas looked at me. Take her away.
Two soldiers immediately grabbed my arms.
Wait!
I struggled against them. Silas!
They dragged me out of the banquet hall while everyone watched. I eventually stopped fighting because I was too tired to care.
...
When I finally returned to my bedroom, I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at nothing. I didn't know how long I stayed there before the door was suddenly kicked open.
Silas walked inside, his expression dark.
Raven.
I looked up. What now?
He marched toward me and grabbed my wrist. How dare you?
I frowned. What are you talking about?
Vesper was kidnapped.
My heart skipped. What?
Don't pretend you don't know.
His grip tightened around my wrist. You couldn't get the medals and dog tag, so you decided to have Vesper kidnapped instead?
I stared at him, then actually laughed because the accusation was so absurd.
Silas, your own men brought me back from the gala. I've been watched every second since I left the hospital. Your soldiers follow me everywhere.
I pulled my wrist from his hand and looked him straight in the eyes. So tell me, when exactly was I supposed to kidnap Vesper?
His face remained cold. You could've ordered someone else to do it.
With what?
I laughed bitterly. I don't have an army, Silas. You do.
He stepped closer. Don't lie to me.
I'm not lying.
My voice became firm as I held his gaze. I didn't touch Vesper.
I wiped the tears from my face and gave him a cold smile. But if you're asking whether I'm sorry that someone finally made her afraid, then no.
I shook my head.
I'm not sorry at all.
Silas stared at me for a moment, clearly caught off guard by my answer. Before he could say anything, the bedroom door opened, and Vesper walked in.
Her clothes were messy, her hair was all over the place, and a clear red handprint marked her cheek. She looked at me with those innocent, wounded eyes.
Raven...
Her voice trembled as she lowered her gaze. It wasn't her fault. I shouldn't have argued with her. She was upset, and I understand that.
Of course. Even after everything, she still knew exactly how to make herself look innocent.
Vesper reached for the service medals and dog tag hanging around her neck, then looked at Silas with a hesitant expression. Silas, maybe I shouldn't keep these. Raven's already hurting, and I don't want to make things worse.
Silas immediately caught her wrist. Don't.
His voice softened when he looked at her. You don't have to give anything back because Raven can't control herself.
Vesper lowered her eyes. But...
No.
Silas looked at me, and whatever softness had been in his face disappeared. Someone like Raven doesn't deserve to wear or even touch something that belonged to a decorated soldier.
My chest tightened.
My father's medals.
My father's dog tag.
And somehow, I was the one who didn't deserve them.
Silas turned toward the steward. Take her to the punisment hall.
I frowned. What?
Shes been given enough chances.
His voice was flat as he looked at me. Raven, since you refuse to admit what you've done, you'll kneel in the ancestral hall until you understand your mistake.
I almost laughed. After everything you've done to me, you're still pretending I'm the problem?
His eyes hardened. If you did nothing wrong, you wouldn't be punished.
I looked at him for a long moment before giving him a bitter smile. You know what my biggest mistake was?
Silas said nothing.
MARRYING YOU.
His expression changed for a second, but the coldness quickly returned.
Add more hours.
He looked toward the steward. And no one lets her leave until I say so.
I didn't beg. I didn't cry. I simply let his men take me away.
The punishment hall was cold, and they made me kneel on broken glass. The first few minutes were unbearable, but eventually the pain became something I could ignore. My knees started bleeding, yet I wasn't allowed to move. Two of Silas's men stood behind me the entire time, and whenever I tried to shift even slightly, one of them warned me.
Donna, you can't move.
So I stayed there.
Hour after hour passed while my legs went numb, my back ached, and blood slowly soaked through my clothes. I stared at the family altar in front of me and wondered how I had ended up there. Was this really the same family I thought I was marrying into? Was this really the man I once trusted with my life?
I almost laughed.
I had spent years studying toxins, saving lives, and working with some of the most dangerous substances in the world, yet I couldn't save my own daughter. I couldn't save my father, and I couldn't even save myself from the man I'd married.
The punshment hall doors finally opened, and Vesper walked in. She looked perfectly fine now, as if the red handprint on her cheek had never existed. The moment she saw me on the floor, her expression softened.
Raven...
She walked closer and lowered herself slightly, looking at me with practiced concern. I pleaded with Silas for you. He was really angry, but I kept telling him you were only acting out because you're grieving.
I looked at her without saying anything.
She smiled gently. You can stop now. I've convinced him to let you go.
My phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket.
I pulled it out with shaking fingers.
It was my lawyer.
Ms. Raven, your divorce from Silas Thorne has been finalized. The divorce certificate has been delivered to your residence. Please check your mail.
I stared at the message.
For the first time in weeks, I felt something other than pain.
Relief.
It was finally over.
I slowly pushed myself up. My knees screamed in pain, but I didn't care.
Vesper watched me with a faint smile. I really hope we can put all of this behind us.
I looked at her. Don't worry. I picked up my phone and met her eyes. We're done.
She blinked.
I gave her a faint smile. And Vesper? I looked straight into her eyes. I'll be waiting to see how all of this ends for you.
Her innocent expression froze for half a second before she quickly replaced it with another confused smile. I don't understand what you mean.
I think you do.
I turned around and walked out.
I limped all the way home. There was nothing left for me to pack except clothes and a few things that belonged to Riley and Dad. I put everything into my suitcase, but my hands stopped when I saw Riley's old picture.
I touched her face through the glass.
I'm sorry, baby.
My voice broke. I couldn't protect you.
I closed my eyes for a moment before putting the picture away. I wasn't staying here anymore.
I dragged my suitcase downstairs and took one last look around the house. This place had once been my home. Now it was nothing more than the place where I lost everything.
I walked out without looking back.
But before I reached the gate, a black car stopped in front of me. The window slowly rolled down, revealing a man with sharp features who looked at me from inside. He gave me a calm smile.
Raven.
I stopped.
He opened the door.
I've come to fulfill our contract.
