He Chose His Mistress So I Ran With Our Son

I stood in the center of the suffocatingly lavish study of Kensington Manor. I looked dead-eyed across the mahogany desk at my mother-in-law, Lady Tiara.

Im done, Tiara, I stated. Keep your money. I want a divorce.

Bear with it, Ruby, she sighed, waving her diamond-adorned hand dismissively. This is the ninety-ninth time youve threatened to leave over his little affairs. It is getting exhausting.

She set her teacup down with a sharp clink.

"Have you forgotten our arrangement?" she asked. "I paid you handsomely to love my son. To keep him grounded. What about your mother, Ruby? If you leave, who exactly pays for her life support?"

She smiled. She thought I was still the desperate, penniless girl she had bought five years ago. I was twenty-two, drowning in crippling medical debt, watching machines breathe for my dying mother. Then, Lady Tiara had stepped into the sterile ICU waiting room like a queen.

She offered me a lifeline, but it came with a heavy, suffocating chain.

Lewis Kensington. The citys most notorious billionaire playboy. He was reckless, arrogant, and a permanent fixture on the front page of every tabloid, usually with a different supermodel on his arm. Tiara was desperate to clean up his image before the board of directors ousted him from the family empire. She needed a quiet, respectable wife to play the part.

I sold my freedom to save my mother's life. I agreed to the sham marriage.

The real tragedy was that somewhere along the line, I had stupidly, foolishly fallen in love with my own fake husband. I had given him a son. I had tried to build a real home.

But Lewis never stopped being the playboy, and his heart never stopped belonging to his friend, Chloe.

I swallowed the bitter memory. I simply reached into my designer bag, pulled out a folded bank statement, and slid it across the polished wood.

"My mother's medical bills are paid in full," I said, watching the color drain from her face. "Every single penny. The contract tying me to Lewis is null and void. I am finally free."

I turned on my heel, ready to march upstairs and pack my bags.

Before I could take three steps, the heavy mahogany doors burst open.

Maria, our head nanny, collapsed onto the rug.

"Madam!" she screamed, her voice tearing through the quiet study. "Its Kevin!"

My blood ran cold. "What about him? What happened?"

"The back gates!" Maria sobbed, pressing her hands to her face. "They were left wide open in the storm! Hes gone, Madam! We can't find him anywhere!"

Panic, raw and blinding, seized my chest. I sprinted out of the study and threw myself into the freezing, torrential rain.

"Kevin!" I screamed into the darkness.

The storm swallowed my voice. I tore through the massive estate, my expensive shoes sinking deep into the freezing mud.

I searched the gardens, the hedges, the playground. Nothing. My four-year-old son was gone.

Terrified and shivering, I pulled out my phone. My fingers were slick with rain as I dialed my husband's number.

Pick up. Please, Lewis, pick up.

On the fifth ring, the line connected.

"What is it, Ruby?" Lewis answered. His tone was clipped and annoyed. In the background, I could hear the soft clinking of crystal glasses and a live jazz band.

"Lewis, it's Kevin," I choked out, tears mixing with the rain on my face. "He's missing. The back gates were open. You have to come home right now. Call your private security team. Please, Lewis!"

A heavy, irritated sigh echoed through the speaker.

"Are you seriously pulling this stunt again, Ruby?" Lewis scoffed coldly.

"What? No! Lewis, I'm serious"

"My mother just texted me," he interrupted, his voice dripping with arrogant venom. "You just threatened her with a divorce, and now youre faking a kidnapping? You are pathetic."

"He is four years old! He is out in the storm!" I screamed.

"Kevin is probably hiding in the west wing," Lewis snapped. "Stop using my son to ruin my dinner with Chloe."

"Lewis, I swear to God"

Click.

He hung up on me.

I stood frozen in the grand hallway, the rain dripping from my soaked clothes onto the marble floor. The realization hit me like a physical blow to the stomach.

The man I had actually fallen for, the man I had tried to build a family with, cared more about his mistress than his own flesh and blood.

I wiped my face, my sorrow instantly hardening into absolute, lethal rage.

I opened my phone dialer, ready to call the police myself.

Before I could press the first digit, my phone buzzed in my palm.

An anonymous text message.

I opened it. My breath hitched in my throat.

It was a photo. Kevins favorite stuffed bear, completely covered in mud.

In the background, out of focus but unmistakable, were the violent, rushing waters of the river that bordered the edge of the estate.

Beneath the photo was a single line of text.

Stop looking, or he falls in.

I drove like a madwoman to Lewiss private penthouse. I bypassed the receptionist, ignoring her frantic protests, and shoved open the heavy glass doors to his suite.

Lewis stood by the floor-to-ceiling window. He wasn't alone. Chloe was pressed against his chest, her arms wrapped tightly around his neck, her face buried in his expensive shirt.

"Lewis!" I screamed.

He turned, his handsome face instantly twisting into a mask of pure fury. "How the hell did you get up here? I told you I am done playing these games, Ruby."

"Its not a game!" I lunged forward, shoving my phone directly into his face. The screen glowed with the terrifying photo of Kevins mud-soaked bear. "Look at it! Look at the text! They have him, Lewis. They have our son!"

Lewis barely glanced at the screen.

Before he could speak, Chloe let out a dramatic, breathless gasp.

She clutched her chest, her knees buckling slightly as she leaned her full weight against Lewis.

"Lewis," she whimpered, her voice trembling. "My heart... I can't breathe. She's screaming... it's too much stress."

"Look what you're doing to her!" Lewis roared.

He raised his hand and violently slapped my phone away. The device flew across the room, smashing against the marble floor.

"No!" I dropped to my knees, frantically trying to piece the broken glass together. The sharp edges cut into my fingertips, drawing blood, but I didn't care.

"You are completely unhinged," Lewis sneered, looking down at me with absolute disgust. "Faking a ransom text just to get my attention? You are sick, Ruby. Security!"

Two massive guards rushed into the suite.

"Get her out of my sight," Lewis ordered coldly. He wrapped his arm protectively around Chloes waist, pulling her closer. "Im taking Chloe home. She needs to rest."

The guards grabbed my arms, hauling me to my feet. I kicked. I screamed. I fought with every ounce of strength in my body, but it was useless.

They dragged me into the elevator, down to the lobby, and threw me forcefully out the front doors.

I hit the wet pavement hard. The torrential rain instantly soaked through my clothes, chilling me to the bone. I scrambled to my knees, sobbing uncontrollably.

The glass doors behind me slid open. Lewis walked out, sheltering a fragile-looking Chloe under a large black umbrella. He didn't even look at me as they walked toward the curb.

Suddenly, the blinding headlights of a sleek Rolls-Royce pierced the dark, rainy street.

The luxury car screeched to a halt directly in front of us, blocking Lewiss path.

The back door swung open. Lady Tiara stepped out into the storm.

"Mother?" Lewis asked, startled. "What are you doing"

The sound of the slap echoed over the roaring thunder.

"You absolute, pathetic fool," Tiara hissed, her voice dripping with lethal venom. "Your son is missing, and you are playing nursemaid to this... this parasite?"

Lewis touched his reddened cheek, his eyes wide with shock. "Mother, it's a lie. Ruby is faking it to ruin my night."

"You are blind," Tiara spat. "Take your mistress and get out of my sight. Before I strip you of the Kensington name entirely."

Lewis clenched his jaw. He grabbed Chloes hand and dragged her toward his waiting sports car, still refusing to believe the truth.

He drove away, leaving his mother and his wife standing in the freezing rain.

"Get up, Ruby," she commanded, offering me her hand. "If my foolish son wont save my grandson, I will."

I took her hand.

Twenty minutes later, the Rolls-Royce pulled into a dark, secluded alleyway.

Tiara led me down a flight of concrete stairs into a dimly lit, underground room.

A man was waiting for us.

"Ruby, this is Carlos Vance," Tiara said quickly. "He is a private investigator. He operates strictly in the shadows, and he owes me his life."

"I bypassed the city's surveillance network," Carlos said. "I checked the feeds around Kensington Manor at the time of the storm."

"Did you see who took him?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"No," Carlos replied grimly. "Because the cameras weren't just turned off. They were wiped clean."

He turned to face us, his dark eyes locking onto mine.

"Someone used an elite master override code to erase the footage," Carlos explained. "Its a localized security measure. Only family members possess that specific code."

The air vanished from the room. An inside job. Someone in the Kensington family had taken my son.

"I traced the signal from the burner phone that sent you the text," Carlos continued, grabbing a heavy black jacket. "It pinged ten minutes ago at the abandoned shipping yard on the edge of the river."

"Take me there," I demanded. "Now."

The drive to the shipping yard was a blur of rain and terrifying silence. When we arrived, the area was a desolate wasteland of towering, rusted metal containers.

The wind howled off the rushing river, a violent, deafening roar.

Carlos led the way, a heavy flashlight in one hand and a drawn weapon in the other. We wove through the maze of metal until he stopped abruptly in front of a dark red container.

The heavy iron latch was unlocked.

I pressed my ear against the freezing, wet metal.

Cough.

It was faint. It was weak. But I knew that sound anywhere.

"Kevin!" I screamed.

I didn't wait for Carlos. I grabbed the heavy metal handle and yanked the door open. Pitch black darkness stared back at me.

"Kevin, Mommy is here!" I cried out, stepping over the threshold into the freezing container.

"Ruby, wait!" Carlos yelled, lunging forward to grab my arm.

He stepped inside just as a loud, mechanical screech echoed through the night.

The heavy metal doors violently slammed shut behind us.

The lock clicked into place with a sickening, final thud.

I slammed my fists against the heavy iron doors. "Help! Somebody help us!"

"Step back, Ruby," Carlos ordered.

I heard the metallic clink of his tools.

"Mommy?" A tiny, broken whisper pierced the dark.

My heart stopped. "Kevin? Baby, I'm here! Mommy is right here!"

I dropped to my knees, crawling blindly across the freezing, rusted floor. My hands brushed against a tiny, shivering frame. I pulled him into my chest. Kevin was ice-cold. He was trembling so violently his teeth chattered against my collarbone. His small fingers dug into my shirt like tiny claws.

"I've got you," I sobbed, wrapping my body around his to share my warmth. "I've got you, baby. You're safe."

The heavy iron lock gave way with a deafening screech. Carlos shoved the massive doors open.

The pale moonlight flooded the container, illuminating the nightmare.

I finally saw my son. His lips were blue. His clothes were soaked in mud and freezing rain. I stripped off my wet jacket and wrapped him in Carloss heavy, dry coat.

I rubbed his arms frantically, trying to force the warmth back into his fragile body.

"Mommy," Kevin whimpered, burying his face in my neck. "It was so cold. I didn't like the game."

I froze. "Game? What game, baby? Who brought you here?"

Kevin sniffled, his tiny fingers gripping my shirt. "Auntie Chloe. She said we were playing hide and seek. She told me to hide in the dark car. But she locked the doors. She didn't come back."

The blood in my veins turned to ice.

Chloe.

"Ruby," Carlos said sharply.

He was kneeling near the back of the container. He held up a small, glittering object in the beam of his flashlight.

I walked over, clutching Kevin to my chest. I looked down at Carlos's gloved hand.

It was a diamond earring. A massive, flawless, teardrop diamond set in platinum.

A wave of pure, suffocating nausea washed over me. I knew that earring. It was a custom-made, limited-edition piece.

I had seen the velvet box sitting on Lewiss dresser just yesterday. He had bought it for Chloe.

"Take me to the Kensington family hospital," I demanded. My voice didn't even sound like my own. It was lethal. "Now."

The pristine, glaringly white hallways of the private hospital were silent.

I kicked the double doors of the VIP suite open with my muddy boot.

Lewis was sitting on the edge of the plush hospital bed. He was gently stroking Chloes hair. She was hooked up to an IV, sipping water, recovering from her fake "migraine."

They both jumped as the doors slammed against the walls.

"Ruby?" Lewis stood up, his eyes widening in shock.

I marched into the room. I was covered in mud, grease, and freezing rain. I held my traumatized, shivering son tightly in my arms.

"Kevin!" Lewis gasped, taking a step forward. "He's okay? Where did you find him?"

"Don't you dare touch him," I snarled, stepping back. I held Kevin tighter. He buried his face in my neck, terrified of his own father's loud voice.

I reached into my pocket. I pulled out the teardrop diamond and threw it violently across the room. It hit the floor and skidded directly to a stop at Chloes feet, gleaming under the harsh fluorescent lights.

Chloe looked down. All the color instantly drained from her perfectly made-up face.

"I found him locked in a freezing shipping container by the river," I said, my voice echoing off the sterile walls. "And I found that right next to him."

I pointed a shaking finger at Chloe. "Call the police, Lewis. Have her arrested for attempted murder."

For a split second, absolute silence filled the room.

Then, the performance began.

Chloe let out a piercing, hysterical sob. She scrambled backward on the bed, pulling the pristine white sheets up to her chin, acting like a terrified victim.

"Lewis!" she wailed, tears streaming down her face in perfect, calculated drops. "She's lying! I would never hurt Kevin! I love him! I bought him toys just yesterday!"

She pointed a trembling finger at me. "She stole that earring from my purse! She stole it to frame me because she hates me! She knows you love me, Lewis!"

"You locked my son in a metal box to freeze to death!" I screamed, stepping toward the bed. "He told me! He said Auntie Chloe played hide and seek!"

"He's four years old!" Chloe sobbed, hiding her face against Lewiss arm. "You coached him to say that! You kidnapped your own son just to destroy me!"

I looked at Lewis. I waited for him to see the truth. I waited for the man I married to look at his shivering, traumatized child and realize what this monster had done.

Lewis looked down at the custom diamond earring on the floor.

He looked at Kevin, who was crying silently into my shoulder.

Then, he looked at me.

There was no love in his eyes. There was no relief that his son was alive. There was only pure, unadulterated disgust.

"You are sick, Ruby," Lewis whispered.

The words hit me like a physical blow.

"What?" I choked out.

"You actually locked Kevin in a container just to frame Chloe?" Lewiss voice rose, vibrating with furious, self-righteous rage. "You would put our son's life in danger just to win some pathetic, jealous feud? You are a monster."

"Lewis, she did this! She tried to kill him! Look at your son!"

"Shut up!" he roared. He stepped in front of Chloe, shielding her from me as if I were the threat. "You are an unfit mother. You are completely insane. You need to be locked in a psych ward."

He pulled his phone from his pocket, his eyes locked onto mine with lethal hatred.

"I am calling the police," Lewis stated coldly. "I am having you arrested for child endangerment. And I swear to God, Ruby, you are never allowed to see Kevin again."

I stood perfectly still. The sterile hospital lights buzzed above me, casting harsh shadows over the room.

I looked at the man I had sacrificed everything for. The man I had loved. He was standing over his murderous mistress, threatening to take my child away. He didn't even ask if Kevin was hurt.

He didn't even offer him a blanket.

Something inside my chest shattered. It didn't just break. It turned completely to ash, blowing away in a cold, unforgiving wind.

The desperate, foolish girl who loved Lewis was dead.

I looked at Lewis. His phone was still in his hand, his thumb hovering over the dial pad to call the police. He expected me to fall to my knees. He expected me to beg for mercy. He wanted me to fight so he could prove I was crazy.

Instead, I turned my back on him.

I tightened my grip on Kevin, shielding his face from the harsh hospital lights, and walked toward the door.

"Where are you going?" Lewis demanded. "Ruby! I said I'm calling the police! You are not taking him!"

I didn't look back.

I simply walked out, leaving him standing with the monster he chose over his own flesh and blood.

The storm had finally passed by the time I returned to Kensington Manor. Lady Tiara was waiting in the grand foyer.

She stood perfectly still, her sharp eyes taking in my muddy clothes and Kevins pale, exhausted face. She knew instantly.

"He didn't believe you," Tiara stated.

"He threatened to have me arrested," I replied, my voice devoid of all emotion. "He protected Chloe. He blamed me."

A dangerous, terrifying shadow crossed Tiaras eyes. Her jaw clenched.

"I bought you to fix my son," Tiara said, her voice trembling with a rare, raw fury. "I thought you were just a pawn. But I was wrong. Lewis is a weak, foolish boy who will let this family's true heir die for a manipulative parasite. You are the only one with the strength to protect my grandson's life. The Kensington bloodline survives through him, not Lewis."

She turned and walked into her private study. I followed her, holding Kevin tightly against my chest. She approached a massive, oil-painted portrait of the Kensington ancestors.

She reached behind the heavy gold frame, pressing a hidden panel. The wall slid open with a soft click, revealing a steel safe.

She pulled out a thick leather folder and pressed it firmly into my hands.

"Inside are new passports for you and Kevin," Tiara said. "There is also access to a private, untraceable fortune. It is entirely yours."

She reached back into the safe and pulled out a small, silver flash drive.

"This contains every dark secret, every hidden sin of the Kensington family empire," she said, placing it gently in my palm. She looked at me, her eyes blazing with a grandmother's wrath. "Take my grandson and run, Ruby. Disappear. And when you are strong enough, come back and destroy him. Im sorry for bringing you into this mess."

I didn't hesitate. I carried Kevin upstairs, bathed him in warm water, and tucked him into my bed.

I packed nothing but the clothes on our backs.

Then, I picked up my phone and dialed the one man I knew could get us out of London before sunrise.

Charles Harrington.

He was Britains most ruthless aristocratic lawyer. He was cold, brilliant, and lethal in a courtroom. He was also the man who had secretly loved me for five years.

He had stood in the shadows, watching Lewis break my heart over and over again, waiting patiently for the day I finally had enough.

He answered on the first ring.

"I need to leave, Charles," I whispered into the receiver. "Tonight. With Kevin."

"I will have a private jet waiting on the tarmac in one hour," Charles said, his voice a smooth, comforting anchor in the dark. "I am drafting the ironclad legal documents right now. No one will ever find you, Ruby. I promise you that."

"Thank you," I breathed, a single tear finally escaping my eye.

"I would burn the world down for you," Charles replied smoothly. "Just say the word."

---

The morning sun was shining brightly when Lewis finally returned to the manor. He expected to find Ruby crying in the foyer. He expected her to be on her knees, begging for his forgiveness for her insane stunt at the hospital.

He was ready to punish her.

He pushed open the heavy mahogany doors.

"Ruby!" Lewis called out, his voice echoing off the pristine marble floors.

No one answered. The house was eerily, terrifyingly empty. The maids were gone. The nanny was gone. There was no sound of his son playing in the halls.

Frowning, Lewis walked into the grand dining room. He stopped dead in his tracks.

Sitting alone in the center of the massive oak table were three items.

His mothers priceless heirloom wedding ring. A divorce paper, signed flawlessly in black ink. And a tablet, its screen glowing brightly.

Lewis slowly approached the table. His heart began to pound a frantic, irregular rhythm against his ribs. He picked up the tablet and tapped the screen.

A video began to play.

Ruby appeared on the screen. She was holding Kevin safely in her arms. The boy was dressed in a warm sweater, resting his head against her chest.

"You chose your mistress over your sons life, Lewis," Ruby said. Her voice was a lethal, icy blade that sliced straight through the speaker. "You are dead to us now."

Lewis stared at the screen, his breath catching painfully in his throat.

"Don't bother looking for us," Ruby continued, her eyes staring directly into his soul with a promise of absolute ruin. "Because the next time we meet, I will be the one taking everything from you."

The video abruptly cut to black.

Lewis opened his mouth to scream her name.

But before a single sound could leave his lips, a deafening gunshot ripped through the air, and the massive glass windows of the dining room violently shattered inward.

Lewis POV

Shards of glass rained down like daggers. I threw my arms over my head and dove to the marble floor, the sharp edges biting into my expensive suit.

"Mr. Kensington!"

Heavy boots pounded against the marble. My private security team swarmed the room, their weapons drawn, sweeping the perimeter.

"Stay down, sir!" the head of security barked, stepping in front of me with his gun raised toward the darkness outside.

I slowly pushed myself up, my hands shaking. My pulse pounded in my ears. I looked at the shattered window, the freezing wind howling through the gaping hole in my home.

"Clear!" a guard shouted from the terrace.

"Sir, look at this," the head of security said.

He knelt near the edge of the mahogany table. Resting amidst the glittering shards of broken glass was a jagged, heavy rock. Tied around it was a piece of thick, white paper.

I snatched it from his gloved hands. I ripped the string off and unfolded the paper.

There were only seven words, printed in crude, black ink.

Stop digging into the security footage.

My blood ran cold.

I stared at the note, my breath catching in my throat. I hadn't even looked at the footage yet. I hadn't even asked the guards about the wiped cameras. But whoever did this knew I would.

Someone was trying to silence me. Someone inside my own circle.

"Lock down the estate," I ordered, my voice trembling with a sudden, terrifying realization. "Nobody gets in or out. Find out where that shot came from. Now!"

I roared, my voice cracking. The guards scrambled, leaving me alone with the shattered glass and the terrifying truth that my family's secrets were deadly.

I couldn't breathe in that house anymore. The silence was suffocating. The reality of Rubys empty closet, the signed divorce papers, and Kevins missing toys was crushing my chest.

I needed to get out. I needed someone to tell me this was all a misunderstanding. I needed Chloe.

I drove my sports car recklessly through the slick, rain-washed streets of London. My knuckles were white on the steering wheel. I kept replaying the hospital scene in my head.

Ruby, covered in mud, holding our shivering son. I had called her a monster. I had threatened to call the police on my own wife.

I needed Chloe to tell me I was right. I needed her to look at me with those wide, innocent eyes and swear that she would never hurt a child. I was desperate to cling to the lie I had built my life around. I needed her to validate my anger and prove Ruby was the insane one.

I pulled up to Chloes luxury high-rise, bypassing the concierge and taking the private elevator straight to her penthouse.

I unlocked the door with my spare key.

The penthouse was warm, smelling of expensive vanilla perfume. The faint sound of running water echoed from the master bathroom.

"Chloe?" I called out, tossing my keys onto the marble kitchen island.

No answer. Just the steady hiss of the shower.

I walked down the hallway, my mind racing. I wanted to hold her. I wanted her soft voice to calm the absolute panic rising in my throat.

I pushed the bedroom door open. The bathroom door was slightly ajar, thick steam billowing out into the bedroom.

I stepped closer, ready to push the door open and step into the shower with her.

Then, I heard her voice.

She wasn't singing. She wasn't humming. She was muttering to herself, her tone sharp, irritated, and completely devoid of the sweet, fragile innocence she always showed me.

"Stupid," Chloe hissed over the sound of the running water. "Absolutely stupid."

I froze. My hand hovered inches from the bathroom door.

"It was supposed to be easy," she muttered, her voice echoing off the bathroom tiles. "But no. The brat wouldn't stay quiet during hide and seek."

The air vanished from my lungs.

Hide and seek.

Rubys screaming voice from the hospital flashed in my mind like a physical blow. He said Auntie Chloe played hide and seek!

"Whining about the cold," Chloe continued, her voice dripping with venom. "I should have locked him in the trunk instead. Now the whole thing is a mess."

My heart stopped. It literally stopped beating in my chest.

A wave of pure, suffocating nausea washed over me. I stumbled backward, my hand flying to my mouth.

She did it.

Chloe did it.

Ruby was telling the truth. My beautiful, desperate wife had crawled through the freezing mud to save our son, and I had called her a monster.

I had threatened to take Kevin away. I had protected the woman who tried to murder my four-year-old boy.

I backed away from the bathroom door, my vision blurring with tears of absolute horror. I couldn't breathe. The vanilla perfume in the air suddenly smelled like poison.

I bumped into her vanity table.

Bzzzz. Bzzzz.

A sharp vibration broke through my panic.

I looked down. Sitting next to Chloes expensive makeup brushes was a cheap, black burner phone. It wasn't her main phone. I had never seen it before.

It buzzed again, sliding slightly across the glass tabletop.

My trembling hand reached out. I picked it up.

The screen glowed brightly in the dim bedroom, displaying an incoming call from an unsaved number.

I stared at the digits. My mind raced, piecing the numbers together. I had a photographic memory for numbers. I had seen this exact sequence just hours ago.

It was the number on Rubys shattered phone screen.

The exact same anonymous number that had sent the photo of Kevins mud-soaked bear.

The phone vibrated violently in my palm.
