Securing a scholarship to this elite academy, I somehow caught the attention of the campus king, Chase Sterling.
He cornered me in an empty classroom, his voice a low, tempting murmur.
You're the most unique girl I've ever met. Listen to melet me take care of you, okay?
My cheeks flushed. You'reextraordinary. I admire that.
I became his perfect, obedient girl.
He didn't want the spotlight on me, so I withdrew from every competition.
He had exacting tastes, so I stopped hitting the books, devoting my days to prepareing him three meticulously crafted meals.
The night before the SATs, I was attacked on my way to buy ingredients for his dinner. Lying on the cold pavement, I felt blood seep beneath me.
He searched for me frantically for two days. We finally met at the test center entrance.
"Joey, I'm sorry. I didn't protect you. Come home with me. We'll take the exams next year."
I smiled.
"But I just finished. I aced every question."
"Let's break up. I'm attracted to brilliance. You don't have it anymore."
Walking out of the testing room, a reporter stopped me.
"Excuse me, how did you find the exam this year?"
Shedding my usual timid demeanor, I looked directly into the camera, a faint smirk on my lips.
"Not bad. Pretty sure I nailed every question, guessed every answer right!"
The reporter seemed taken aback. "Oh? So, you must be an excellent student normally?"
"Average. Last practice test? Dead last in the school."
"Did you skip it?"
"Nope."
Seemingly oblivious to how bizarre that sounded, I continued.
"It's because I loved my boyfriend too much. He didn't like me studying, so I listened to him."
As I spoke, I felt an intense gaze burning into me.
Chase Sterling.
Only two days apart, and the usually impeccably cool, pristine heir looked utterly wrecked.
Exhaustion etched his handsome face.
Only his eyes, fixed on me, shone bright with frantic relief.
"Joey! There you are! Do you have any idea how long I've been looking for you!"
I stood my ground as Chase rushed over and pulled me into a crushing hug.
He grabbed my wrist, trying to steer me away.
"I'm sorry, Joey, I messed up badly. Come home with me. We'll take the SATs next year together."
I didn't budge. Instead, I twisted my wrist, breaking his grip.
I shifted position, making sure both Chase's face and mine were perfectly framed for the camera.
Then, locking eyes with him, I spoke slowly, deliberately,
"But I already took it. And I aced it."
"We're done, Chase Sterling. I like intellectual brilliance. And you? You've lost yours."
Stunned by my words, Chase froze.
Then, snapping back, he roared at the reporter and cameraman, "Turn that off! Shut it down now!"
"Do you ehave any idea who I am? If you don't listen..."
"Chase!"
I called out to the man on the verge of losing all contorl, tilting my head with a cold smile. "It's live."
"And besides..."
I deliberately drew out the words, giving the reporter time for the reporter to make a swift exit, before nodding towards someone behind Chase.
"Your fiance's here. Aren't you gonna say hi?"
Before the words fully left my lips, a shrill, entitled voice cut through the air, draining the last trace of color from Chase's face.
"Chase! What are you doing, still hanging around trash like Joey Bishop!"
"You promised me this stupid Redemption Game would end after the SATs... Chase! Are you insane?!"
Vivian Rothschild didn't get to finish before Chase's hand shot out, slapping her hard enough to send her stumbling to the ground.
She clutched her cheek, staring in disbelief at the man who, just days ago, had showered her with hundred-thousand-dollar birthday gifts and whispered sweet nothings.
That same man now dropped to his knees in public, grabbing the hem of my coat, his eyes red-rimmed, pleading pathetically.
"Joey, I know I was wrong. I never should have treated you that way."
"Don't break up with me, okay?"
"Please..."
I leaned down close to Chase.
Stopping mere inches from his face, I saw as desperate hope flooded his eyes.
Mistaking my proximity for relenting, he began to speak, but I pressed my hand over his mouth.
My breath brushed his skin, and I watched coldly as a sickly flush spread across his pale cheeks.
This closeness, this intimacy, was rare even during our year together.
But my words were pure ice.
"Chase, are you that desperate?"
"You, a Sterling heir, actually falling for someone you considered beneath you?"
"Get real!"
My words drained the final vestige of color from Chase's face. He swayed, looking as if his world had collapse.
Just as mine had, in the very beginning.
Only now, the tables had completely turned.

My first meeting with Chase Sterling was far from pleasant.
As the top-performing student in the city, I'd just transferred to this elite academy and immediately clinched first place in the first monthly exams.
No one congratulated me. Instead, they looked at me with a weird mix of pity and disgust, like I was some kind of freak.
Back then, I didn't realize that being number one at this school came with an unspoken price.
"Chase, some scholarship kid just took top spot. Heard she crawled out of an orphanage. Want us to...?"
The guy paused, miming something unsavory.
Chase was lounging, legs crossed, engrossed in a game, a lollipop dangling from his lips.
He didn't answer immediately.
Only after the game ended, a robotic female voice announcing his flawless victory, did he speak lazily,
"She just arrived and pulled off grades like that? That takes guts."
"Besides," he added, his voice turning cold, "I don't want to hear about anyone messing with her. Got it?"
"..."
I overheard every word as I passed by.
New to this world of extreme privilege, it was easy to be dazzled.
These polished students discussed things I'd never heard of Cdesigner brands, exotic vacations, lifestyles beyond my imagination. I stuck out painfully.
The subtle exclusion and dismissals from the privileged crowd were bad enough.
For someone from an orphanage? It was far worse.
But Chase's words, that faint hint of protection, felt like a lifeline.
After that day, however, the quiet snubs didnt lessen.
Instead, more people chose to torment me openly.
Mid-winter. Freezing, grimy water cascaded over my head as I lay sprawled on the bathroom floor in my soaked coat. I shuddered violently.
My tormentors just laughed, delighted.
"Look at Joey Bishop! How pathetic! Hahaha, it's hilarious!"
"Who does she think she is? A scholarship orphan trying to catch Chase Sterling's eye? She deserves everything she gets!"
"Hey gutter rat! Bark like a dog and crawl, and maybe we'll let you go this time. Deal?"
I was freezing, barely conscious, my only thought to get back to class.
