The Stepsister Who Played Mother to My Own Son

It was my sons fifth birthdaythe day everything fell apart. One moment, he was laughing, running around the living room with a tiny paper crown crooked on his head. The next, he was lying perfectly still on the floor, and my heart stopped. We rushed him to the hospital, my hands shaking, my chest tight.

I tried to convince myself it was nothing seriousmaybe exhaustion, maybe low blood sugar. Anything but what the doctor said next.

Mrs. Calder, the doctor began slowly, her tone careful, your sons kidneys are failing. Its a chronic condition. Hell need a transplant very soon.

I felt the world collapse. The word disease hung in the air like smoke, suffocating me.

Kidneys? I whispered, my voice trembling. But how? Hes just a child.

The doctor nodded gravely. It could be hereditary. Well need to do genetic testing. Sometimes these conditions are passed down through the parents.

Hereditary. My mind went blank. No one in my family had ever had kidney problems. My parents were healthy. My grandparents had lived long, full lives. Even Adrians side seemed untouched by this.

Still, I nodded, my mind numb. Then test me, I said quickly. Ill donate if it matches. Take whatever he needs. Just make him better.

Two days later, I sat alone in the cold, sterile hospital room, waiting. Adrian wasnt therehe was handling business, as always. My fingers twisted the edge of my sleeve until the doctor returned, file in hand, her expression unreadable.

Mrs. Calder, she said softly, theres a complication. Your blood type doesnt match his.

I frowned. Thats impossible. Im O positive and Elias

is AB negative, she interrupted gently.

My stomach dropped. No that cant be.

The doctor sat down across from me, her voice calm but firm. Theres more. We ran a full genetic screening Vivienne, youre not biologically related to him. Theres no maternal link. You were never pregnant.

I felt my knees weaken. No thats wrong, I whispered, shaking my head. I remember everything. Morning sickness, the delivery, the nurses, holding the baby in my arms I

Sometimes, the doctor said carefully, medications or trauma can create false memories. Did you take anything at that time?

Medication. I remembered the small white pills Adrian had given me every dayhe said they were vitamins for the baby. I had taken them without question, blindly trusting him.

Her words hit me like a hammer. My son he wasnt mine. I felt hollow, like my body had been emptied of everything familiar. I left the hospital trembling, the world spinning around me. Never pregnant. Not my son.

By the time I reached home, I was shaking uncontrollably. I needed proof. That bottlethe one Adrian had always handed mehad to be in the drawer somewhere. I just needed to see it.

But as I crept down the hall, I froze. Voices. Adrian and Seraphinemy stepsister.

come on, Adrian, Seraphine said, sharp with worry. Our child is sick. He needs the transplant soon, or hell die.

Our child. My heart dropped.

And when will you divorce Vivienne? Seraphine demanded. When will I finally be his real mother and not just Auntie? I cant stand watching him suffer while I remain in the shadows!

Adrians voice was calmtoo calm. Relax. Once the inheritance and the company merger are done, Ill handle Vivienne. Just wait about a month.

Seraphines panic rose. But what if Vivienne finds out shes not his mother? Shell want to donate. Everything could unravel. She could ruin everything!

Adrian chuckled lightly. Then Ill give her the same medicine I used before. Shell believe whatever I tell her. She always has. Its you who carried Elias, remember?

I pressed a hand to my mouth, knees almost giving out.

Seraphines voice trembled with fury. Youd better keep your word, Adrian. If you dont get rid of her soon, I will. I refuse to let her live in my place any longer.

He sighed, almost fondly. You know I love you, Seraphine. I was forced to marry her because of our families. You were always the one I wanted.

She laughed bitterly. Yeah, I hated being her stepsister, but as long as I have you I dont care.

A soft, intimate sounda kiss.

My stomach twisted. I pressed my hand against the wall, trying not to collapse. Every word, every gesture burned through me like fire. My entire marriage, my life, my sonall of it a lie.

I remembered the day I said yes to him, trusting them both. Our friendship from high school, our wedding day, the smiles, the promises, the home we built, the child I thought was mine all built on deception.

I couldnt stay another second. I ran to the guest room, grabbed my phone, and called the one person I had vowed never to contactmy mother.

Vivienne? Her voice was wary, cautious.

I need you, I said, tears streaming. Adrian everything he told me it was all lies. Please come get me.

Tears streamed down my face without end. My chest ached with a heaviness that made it nearly impossible to draw a full breath. I sat on the edge of the bed, clutching the blanket like it was the only lifeline holding me together, like if I let go, I would completely fall apart.

The door creaked open. Adrian stepped in, his movements careful, his face pale and drawn as if the gravity of the world rested on him. Vivienne, he said softly, stepping closer, I just came from the hospital. They said Eliass condition is not good. But well find a donor, okay? I promise. Hell be fine.

His words felt like acid in my chest. Every syllable twisted the knife deeper. Love. How casually he used that word, the same mouth that whispered it to Seraphine, the same mouth that betrayed me for years.

I forced my eyes to meet his. Concern filled themor at least thats what I wanted to seebut all I could recognize was the man who had built a world of lies around me. My throat closed. No sound came out. My entire body trembled violently.

He moved closer, trying to take my hands. I know this is difficult, he whispered, but youre not alone. Well get through this together.

Together?

A laugh threatened to escape, but it turned into a strangled sob instead.

Before I could pull away, another voice spoke from the doorway. Vivienne

Seraphine.

She stood there, carefully hiding the malice behind a mask of concern. Her voice was saccharine, way too sweet to be sincere. Im so sorry, she said, stepping inside. This must be overwhelming for you. Youve cared for Elias for so long its okay to rest now. Adrian and I will handle everything.

Rest. The word churned my stomach.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to throw open the door and reveal that I knew everythingthat I had heard them plotting, that I knew she was Eliass real mother, that Adrian had built a life with her while I thought I was his wife. But my voice betrayed me. I could only nod weakly, wiping away my tears. Okay, I whispered, voice barely audible.

Good, she said, offering a small, false smile that made my skin crawl. You have to stay strong. For Elias.

Then she turned to Adrian, brushing his arm with an intimacy that made my chest seize. Lets go. The doctors are waiting.

When they left, silence swallowed the room. Thats when I broke. Completely.

I grabbed my phone, hands trembling so violently it was a struggle to press the numbers. I called my lawyer. I want a divorce, I said, my voice shaking, barely holding together.

There was a pause on the line. Mrs. Calder, are you certain? Your prenuptial agreement forbids divorce without your fathers consent. Your family

I dont care! I cut him off, my heartbeat thundering. My voice steadied now, sharp and determined. Draft the papers. Ill get my father to agree. Just make sure Adrian never finds out. Do you understand?

Yes, maam, the lawyer replied hesitantly.

Good. Ill be in touch soon.

I hung up, leaning back and drawing shaky breaths. My hands were icy, my body weak, but for the first time in what felt like forever, I had made a decision for myself. No more pretending. No more lies.

Later that afternoon, I went to the hospital.

I told myself I wasnt doing this for Adrian or Seraphine. I was doing it for himthe little boy who called me Mommy every night, who made me believe in love, who filled my empty world with laughter. Even if he wasnt mine, I loved him fiercely.

I stopped in the hallway outside the pediatric wing. Eliass room door was slightly ajar, and voices floated through the gap.

Seraphines soft, controlled tone. Adrians calm, deep voice. And then his small, innocent voiceso achingly familiar, so painfully mine in memory.

But Mom, Elias said quietly, why do I have two mommies? Why cant it just be you or Mommy Vivienne?

Seraphine laughed softly, brushing his hair. Sweetheart, Vivienne isnt really your mommy. You know that, right? Its me. I told you to keep it a secret so she wouldnt get hurt or me. Do you understand? You wouldnt want to separate me and Daddy, would you?

My breath hitched.

Adrians voice followed. We told you, son, its just what people believe. You did a great job pretending, remember? Youll have to keep doing it until we say otherwise.

Elias giggled. I know, Daddy. You said to be nice so Mommy Vivienne wouldnt cry.

My hand clenched the doorframe. The world seemed to tilt beneath me.

Seraphine leaned closer to him. Good boy. Youre smart. Once youre better, well live togetherjust the three of us, okay?

Okay, Mommy, Elias said happily, his little voice bright. I love you more than her anyway.

They laughed togetherAdrian, Seraphine, and the boy I had believed was mine.

Something inside me twisted painfully. My heart sank. He loved her more. More than me.

I edged the door open just enough to see them fully. Elias sat on the bed, smiling at Seraphine as she gently wiped his face with a towel.

You dont love Mommy Vivienne anymore? Adrian teased, ruffling his hair lightly.

Elias frowned, tiny lips pouting. Shes mean sometimes. She always makes me sleep early and eat vegetables. She doesnt even let me watch cartoons.

Seraphine chuckled softly. Shes just strict, sweetie. She doesnt mean to be mean.

But I dont like her, Elias said firmly. I like you, Mommy. Youre nicer. You give me candy, and you dont yell.

My hands shook against the doorframe. The words struck me harder than I expected.

Adrian leaned closer to him. Remember what we talked about, Elias? You have to stay nice to her. Dont make her suspicious, okay?

Elias nodded eagerly. Yes, Daddy. You said to pretend so she wouldnt be sad.

Seraphine smiled and kissed his forehead. Thats my good boy.

I turned and walked straight to the hospital administrators office. The nurse looked up, startled. Mrs. Calder?

Ill pay for all of Elias Calders medical bills, I said, placing my bag on the desk, my voice calm but firm. Every single expense. Whatever it costs, send the invoice to me.

The nurse blinked slowly. Of course, Mrs. Calder. Thats generous.

But, I continued, voice sharper, colder now, under no circumstances is he to receive a kidney transplant. Do you understand? Not now. Not ever.

The nurses eyes widened in shock. IIm sorry, but

I said it, I repeated, voice unwavering. Pay me fully. But make sure that surgery never happens.

The elevator doors slid open with a sharp ding, and before I could even glance up from my paperwork, my father stormed into the office. His footsteps were heavy, reverberating across the marble floors with an authority that made the room feel smaller.

My assistant trailed behind him, pale and anxious. Maam, II tried to stop him

Its alright, I said quickly, though a tight knot formed in my stomach.

My fathers glare landed on me immediately. What is this Im hearing? His voice cut like ice. Youre filing for divorce? Vivienne, where did this come from? Are you out of your mind?

I rose slowly, adjusting my blazer, letting my posture declare my resolve. No, Father. Im finally sane.

A tense pause filled the room, heavy and suffocating. His expression darkened, thunderclouds gathering behind his eyes. You know our family doesnt tolerate divorce, he said, voice rising. Youre making a spectacle of yourself. Do you even understand how this will damage our reputation?

I pressed my jaw tight. So cheating is acceptable?

His brow furrowed. Excuse me?

I bit my lip, steadying my shaking voice. I askeddo you condone cheating? Because thats exactly what your perfect son-in-law has been doing. With my stepsister.

The room seemed to drop in temperature. His gaze pinned me like Id just spat on the family name. Then he exhaled sharply, his words soft yet sharp as a knife. You sound just like your mother.

The sting hit me like a slap before I could even speak.

The sound of the comment echoed through the office. My assistant gasped quietly just outside the door, but I didnt move. I didnt call her in. I stayed rooted, hand pressed to my cheek, my eyes burning with unshed tears.

Memories surged. I was a child again, perched near the staircase, watching him leave our house in the dead of night. Back then, I didnt understand the woman he visited was Seraphines mother. I didnt grasp why my mother remained silent, her pain hidden behind forced smiles and endless work papers.

Years later, when Seraphine came into our lives, presented as my stepsister, I had thought I was gaining family. She had been sweet thenlaughing, calling me sister, helping me choose outfits, sharing secrets, braiding my hair for school. Everyone adored her, and I did too. I never realized that behind her warmth, she had been quietly learning how to take everything that belonged to me.

She was a mirror of my fathers betrayal.

Dad, I said, voice cracking, do you even hear yourself? You did this to Mom. You left her for your mistress, and now youre defending Adrian and Seraphine as if its normal

His hand slammed down on my desk with a force that made me flinch.

What the hell is wrong with you? he spat. Didnt I give you Adrian because you wanted him? You begged me to approve that marriage! And now this nonsense?

Tears pricked my eyes. Because I was a fool!

He leaned in, voice rising. If I had known, I would have given him to Seraphine instead. At least shes grateful. She knows how to handle himand the company. You see, the merger is happening soon, and you

Then give him to her, I interrupted, cutting him off sharply. Theyve already been cheating on me anyway.

His eyes widened in shock. What?

I reached into my bag, pulling out a sealed envelope, placing it decisively on the desk between us. Proof. The DNA test. Elias isnt my son.

He glanced at the envelope but didnt touch it. His jaw tightened, his expression unreadable.

I told you, I continued, voice steady despite the tears, you chose Adrian because I loved him. But maybe Seraphine is the daughter you actually raised to perfection. Maybe she deserves him morebecause shes just like you.

He froze, mouth opening, no words escaping. Silence weighed heavy in the room.

Before he could respond, I turned and walked out, my face burning, my back straight. I didnt look back.

Hours later, my phone rang again. It was Adrians mother.

Vivienne, darling, she said warmly, her voice always gentle and kind. Were having a small birthday dinner for my husband tonight. Id love for you and Elias to come.

For a moment, I wanted to refuse. I didnt want to see Adrian. I didnt want to see any of them. But she had always treated me with kindnessthe only person in that household who had ever made me feel like family.

So I agreed.

That evening, I arrived in a white dress, my hair neatly tied. I smiled when people greeted me, laughed politely at their small talk, and acted as though my life wasnt crumbling. Adrian stood beside me, hand on my back, playing the role of the perfect husband.

We looked enviably happy, the kind of couple people admired.

But beneath the fa?ade, his grip tightened, too tight, possessive.

Come with me, he whispered, teeth clenched.

He pulled me toward the balcony, away from prying eyes. The mask slipped.

Whats wrong with you? he hissed, voice low but seething. Why are you acting so strange tonight?

I gave him a cold, measured look. Strange?

He stepped closer, jaw taut. Did you tell your father something? Why was the merger postponed? You know how critical that deal is!

I tilted my head, a faint, quiet smile on my lips. Perhaps because of Elias, I said softly. Maybe your family doesnt want stress while your son is sick.

His eyes darkened. Dont play games with me, Vivienne.

I shrugged. Maybe Im not. Maybe I just dont care anymore.

Disbelief flickered across his face. You dont care? he repeated, slower now. Is that why you were smiling at that man earlier? The one from the board? People noticed, you know.

I smirked lightly. Ah, that one? I leaned closer, voice dropping. I suppose so.

His hand twitched. Anger flared in his gaze. Youve really lost it, he muttered. After everything, you think you can just ruin what weve built?

What youve built? I corrected sharply. Adrian, you built lies. All I ever did was believe them.

He opened his mouth, but I cut him off.

I looked him straight in the eyes, my smile steady and cold. Maybe we should just divorce.

The first thing I felt was paina sharp sting across my cheek, followed by the internal crack of something breaking. Adrian had slapped me.

He had never done that before. Not once in all our years together. He had been gentle, patientthe man who held my hand during long drives, brought me coffee every morning, kissed my forehead before work.

We had laughed over trivial things, dreamed about the future, debated names for our children. I had believed his touch meant safety, his voice meant love. And now, the same hand that once wiped my tears was the one that drew them.

What did you just say? he shouted, voice laced with fury. Divorce me? You think you can just walk away like that? My family would never approve!

My cheek burned as I blinked. Adrian

He stepped closer, jaw tight, breath hot with anger. Is this about wanting freedom? So you can flirt behind my back? Did you really think I wouldnt find out?

I frowned. Flirt? Me?

He scoffed bitterly. Yes! Youre cheating on me, Vivienne!

Disbelief washed over me. Where on earth did you get that idea?

Seraphine told me, he said flatly.

I let out a bitter, short laugh. Of course she did.

He glared. Dont laugh! You think this is funny?

I shook my head, stepping back. So thats it. Youd rather believe her than me. I slid my wedding ring off my finger and held it up between us. Fine. Believe her. Think whatever you want.

The metal hit the floor with a sharp clink and rolled away.

Adrians eyes darkened. His hand moved before I could react. Another slapharder, angrier.

Dont you dare walk away from me! he yelled. Who is that man, huh? Who is he?

Theres no one! I cried, tears streaming. Youre insane!

He ignored me, grabbing my arms and shaking me roughly. Pain shot through my shoulders. You think you can make a fool out of me? Embarrass me in front of my family?

Adrian, stop

But he didnt. His rage blinded him. Every breath came sharper, every movement more violent.

And then

Adrian!

Seraphines heels clicked against the floor as she barreled in, grabbing his arm and yanking him away. What are you doing? Why are you hurting her?

Her voice trembled, just enough to seem sincere.

I staggered back, clutching my arm. Why? I gasped. You told him I was cheating when I wasnt!

Seraphine blinked, eyes wide in mock shock. What? Waitthis is a misunderstanding! I just said you were close to that client! Adrian, you misunderstood me!

Liar! I lunged, tangling my fingers in her perfect hair and yanking hard. You wanted this! You wanted him to hate me!

Seraphine shrieked, grabbing my wrist. Let go of me!

Adrian tried to separate us, shouting both our names, but chaos had already taken over. Shouts, struggles, things clattering to the floor.

Seraphine shoved me, I shoved back. Her nails raked my face, and in a flash of fury, I slapped her.

You ruined everything! I screamed. You took everything from me

Stop it! Adrian barked.

But neither of us listened. Years of buried hatred poured outevery lie, every betrayal, every false smile.

And then I heard a small, trembling voice.

Mommy Vivienne, stop!

My heart froze.

Elias.

He stood near the doorway, eyes wide with fear. Youre bad! he cried. Youre always shouting! I hate you!

Elias I tried to reach him.

He pushed forward, small hands trying to wedge between us. Leave Mommy Seraphine alone!

His push caught me off balance. My heel slipped on the edge of the carpet. The world tilted.

I reached for somethingwall, railing, anythingbut found only air.

And then I fell.

Metal pressed against my back. Air whooshed out of me. The hall echoed with the thud. The last thing I heard before darkness swallowed me was Eliass tiny, trembling voice.

You deserved it, he whispered. Bad!

The words cut deeper than the fall.

When I came to, the room was dim, heavy, muffledlike I was surfacing from a nightmare.

But it wasnt over.

Someone was beside me. I tried to speak, but my throat tightened. Then I felt ithands pressing against my neck.

Seraphine.

Her face loomed above me, twisted with rage. You shouldve stayed down, she hissed, grip tightening. You cant keep ruining everything. Adrian and I deserve to be happy!

I gasped, fighting her hands. Seraphinestop

She pressed harder, nails biting. If you wont leave, she whispered, low and trembling, then Ill make you leave. For good.

Panic surged. I kicked, clawed, struggled with every ounce of strength left. Spots flashed before my eyes.

And then

Hey!

The door burst open.

Seraphine froze, grip loosening just enough for me to gasp for air. A tall man stormed in, dark with shock and anger. In one motion, he pulled her off me, shoving her aside.

What the hell are you doing? he bellowed.

Seraphine stumbled, pale. Sheshe tried to attack me!

Dont lie, he said, sharp, commanding. I saw exactly what you were doing.

I blinked, trying to focus through the haze. The face was familiarstrong jaw, steady eyes, faint scar near his temple.

Lucien? I croaked.

The son of my mothers best friendand now Adrians rival.

The room was filled with shouting when I walked in. Adrians voice cut sharp through the air.

How could you do this, Vivienne? he roared. You sent the police? To arrest Seraphine?

I clenched my hands, fighting to stay calm. She tried to kill me, Adrian! What was I supposed to dothank her?

Before he could respond, my fathers voice sliced through the chaos. Enough! Cold, firm, commanding. He stood by the window, arms crossed, disappointment etched into every line of his face. Do you realize what youve done? This is a scandal, Vivienne. People are already talking. Seraphine is willing to apologize, and you

Apologize? I whispered, disbelief choking me. She almost strangled me to death.

He shot me a look sharp enough to cut. And yet shes the reasonable one. Learn from her, Vivienne. Dont make this worse than it already is.

I turned to him, chest tight. Dad, she

Not another word, he snapped. Youre going to end this. No more police. No more drama.

Seraphine, standing beside Adrian, sniffled delicately, a fake bandage wrapped around her wrist. Her eyes glistened with well-practiced tears.

Vivienne, she said weakly, I didnt mean to hurt you. I was just scared. I I lost control.

I clenched my fists, suppressing a scream.

My fathers gaze hardened. Hear that? Shes apologizing. Now, you do the same.

Now, Vivienne.

Something inside me gave up. Tired. Exhausted. Sick of being cast as the villain in their story. I nodded slowly. Fine. Ill apologize.

Adrians expression softened slightly, though his voice remained cold. Good. Youll apologize to herand to Elias.

Elias? My voice cracked.

Yes, he said. You scared him. He saw you and Seraphine fighting. He wont stop crying. He thinks youre dangerous.

My throat tightened. Adrian, thats not fair

Enough, he interrupted again. Youll do it.

So I did. Seraphine sat on the couch, pretending to be fragile. Elias sat beside her, little arms crossed, face cold.

Im sorry, I said softly. For everything that happened.

Seraphine nodded, eyes lowered like the saint she pretended to be. Its alright, Vivienne. We all make mistakes.

Elias glared at me. Fine, he muttered. Then, he picked up a pillow and threw it at me. But I still hate you!

Elias! Adrian barked.

I didnt react. The pillow landed at my feet. I forced a faint smile. Its okay, I whispered. I understand.

When they left, the silence of the house pressed down on me, heavier than ever.

That night, my phone buzzed with a message from my father.

Dad: Its an act. I believe you. Dont worry Ill handle the divorce. Go home to your mother. I sent Adrian and Seraphine on a business trip. You can leave while theyre gone.

I stared at the message for a long moment before a single tear slipped down my cheek. Reliefquiet, soft, almost unbelievableflooded me. For the first time in months, my father believed me. He finally saw the truth.

Two days later, the doctor discharged me. Adrian arrived, flowers in hand, charm in full force.

Vivienne, he said softly, Im sorry. I was angry, emotional. The business its been hard lately.

I stared at the red rosesthe same ones he had given me the first time he lied.

He placed them on the bedside table and reached for my hand. Please, lets start over. Ill focus on work. You can take care of Elias for now. He needs you.

I nodded faintly. Alright.

He smiled, pressed a kiss to my forehead. Thats my wife.

But in my heart, I knew he wasnt. Not really.

Then I saw her. Seraphine. Waiting in the hallway, arms crossed, expression smug and cold.

So, she said softly, venom in her voice, youre really still here.

I didnt answer. I just stared at her, tired, empty.

She smirked. Once I come back from this trip, you better not be here anymore. Leaning closer, her perfume sharp, heavy: If I find you still breathing the same air as me, Ill make you regret it.

I met her eyes, calm, hollow smile forced onto my lips. Yeah. Sure. You wont have to see me again.

Seraphine straightened, satisfied with the fear she thought shed planted. Good, she said, brushing imaginary dust from her coat. Next time, I wont be so patient.

That night, I made the call.

Two nights later, the plan unfolded quietly. The hospital issued a false report: Elias Calder, deceased. Kidney failure.

But Elias wasnt gone. He slept in my arms, small and safe, wrapped in a blanket, unaware of the chaos wed left behind. My mother had arranged everythingforged documents, private jet, new identity.

Because if they thought they could be happy with me gone, they were wrong. I would take my son with me.

As the plane ascended, city lights fading below, my heart achednot from betrayal this time, but from the bittersweet relief of freedom.

Outside the window, the sky stretched wide, endless. A new beginning painted in gold and gray.

Meanwhile, back in the city, Adrian stormed into the hospital room where Eliass bed should have been. His face drained of color, voice trembling.

Wheres my son? he demanded.

The nurses voice shook. Im sorry, Mr. Calder he he didnt make it.

The nurse looked down, her voice trembling as she held the clipboard close to her chest. Im sorry, Mr. Calder, she whispered. He he didnt make it.

For a moment, the world stopped moving.

Adrian blinked, disbelief washing over him like cold water. What did you just say? His voice came out rough, uneven. Say it again.

The nurse swallowed, avoiding his eyes. There was a complication. His kidneys failed completely. We tried everything, but Elias passed away early this morning.

He scoffed, shaking his head. No. No, thats impossible. You must be talking about another child.

But the nurse only lowered her gaze further. Im sorry, sir. Its your son. Elias Calder.

Before Adrian could say another word, a piercing scream tore through the hallway.

What do you mean dead?! Seraphines voice was raw and trembling. She pushed past two nurses, her eyes wild. Where is his body? Where is my son?!

Miss, please the nurse tried to explain, but Seraphine shoved her away.

I want to see him! she cried, her voice breaking. Where is my son? Where is Elias?

Another nurse stepped forward cautiously, holding a chart. Maam, there was there was a directive. The body was already cremated, per instructions from Mrs. Vivienne Calder.

What? Adrians voice thundered through the room. What did you just say?

The nurse trembled. Mrs. Calder handled all arrangements personally. She she stayed with him through the night. The cremation happened at dawn. She said it was his wish to rest quietly.

Seraphine froze, her face turning white. No, she whispered. No, thats not true. Im his mother. She had no right! Her voice rose into a scream. She took that from me too! Ill sue this hospital! Ill destroy all of you!

She was trembling violently, her knees buckling. Adrian reached for her, but she collapsed against him, fainting from the shock. Nurses rushed forward to catch her, calling for help.

Adrian just stood there, his ears ringing. He couldnt think. Couldnt move. His son his only son gone? Just like that? No goodbye. No last look.

Something inside him snapped.

He turned to the doctor, his face red with fury. Find her. Now. His voice was a growl. Find Vivienne Calder and bring her to me. I dont care what it takes. You hear me?

The staff hesitated, terrified, but he roared louder. GO!

Within minutes, nurses scattered, calling other hospitals, searching files. Adrian pulled out his phone, his hands shaking, dialing Vivienne over and over. Each time, the same response the number you have dialed cannot be reached.

He slammed his phone against the wall. Damn it!

When Seraphine regained consciousness hours later, her face was pale and streaked with tears. She did this, she whispered weakly. She took him from us. She killed him.

Adrian clenched his fists, his eyes dark. I know. And shes going to pay for it.

He left the hospital immediately, storming through the parking lot, his heart pounding. The rain had started to fall heavy, relentless but he barely noticed.

There was only one place left to go.

Viviennes fathers office.

He didnt even wait for the secretary to announce him. He burst through the doors, slamming them shut behind him. Where is she? he demanded, dripping water across the marble floor. Where the hell is your daughter?

Mr. Howard looked up slowly from behind his desk, calm too calm. Mr. Calder.

Adrians chest heaved. Dont play dumb with me. You know where she is. You helped her, didnt you? Tell me right now or

Or what? Mr. Howards tone was cold, cutting through the air like a knife. Youll threaten me? Havent you done enough damage to my family?

Adrians nostrils flared. You think you can talk to me like that? You forget that the merger

There is no merger, Mr. Howard interrupted sharply. Not anymore.

Adrian froze. What?

Mr. Howard rose from his chair, every inch the powerful man he used to admire now looking at him like he was nothing. You heard me. No merger. No partnership. No alliance. From this day on, we have nothing to do with you or your company.

You cant

Oh, but I can. Mr. Howard leaned forward, his voice low and dangerous. I know what you did to Vivienne. I know about Seraphine. About every lie you did to ruin my daughter. About Elias.

Adrians jaw clenched, his pulse quickening. Watch your mouth.

But Mr. Howard didnt back down. You fooled her. You made her believe she was pregnant when she wasnt. You made her live a lie. And now, because of your greed and deceit, shes gone and she took her freedom with her. Good for her.

Adrian slammed his fist on the desk. You dont know anything!

Oh, I know enough. Mr. Howard motioned to his guards. You should leave now, Mr. Calder. Before I decide to press charges myself.

Adrians face contorted in rage. You think this is over? he hissed. You think you can hide her from me? Ill find her. Ill find her and shell regret ever crossing me.

Mr. Howard didnt even flinch. Even if I knew where she was, he said coldly, I wouldnt tell you. Because I was wrong about everything. I thought you could make my daughter happy. But all you did was destroy her.

He turned away, signaling the guards. Now get out of my office.

The guards stepped forward, grabbing Adrian by the arms. He struggled, shouting as they dragged him toward the door. Youll regret this, old man! Do you hear me?!

But the door slammed behind him before he could finish.

Outside, the storm raged on. Adrian stood under the gray sky, soaked, trembling with fury and grief.

Vivienne was gone. Elias was gone.

And all that remained inside him was a festering mix of rage and regret the kind that would eat him alive until he found her.

Shell pay, he muttered under his breath, his hands curling into fists. I swear, shell pay.

The slap landed harder than Seraphine expected. For a moment she only heard the sharp sound and felt the sting flaming across her cheek.

How dare you slap me! she snapped, stumbling back. Youre not my fatherwho are you to

Yes, Mr. Howard said. I am not your blood father. I am your stepfather. But I raised you. I gave you everything. Is this how you repay me?

Seraphines eyes flashed. Everything? You gave me a name and a house, and you kept the truth from me. You gave me nothing that matters. Her voice trembled with a mixture of rage and hurt.

Howards mouth tightened. He moved closer and the second slap came quicker, sharper. Seraphine clutched her cheek, blinking, trying to steady herself.

How dare you do that to my daughter, he growled, looking past Seraphine at the framed photograph of Vivienne on the wall.

Seraphine spat back, words tumbling out like a thrown stone. Do you even care about your daughter? You never did. You left her alone. You treated me better because I fit the life you wanted. You made her the scapegoat.

Howards face faltered for a second, then hardened into anger. That was my mistake, he said tightly. I thought she caused trouble. I judged wrong. But you He pressed his thumb into the envelope he had kept on the desk, as if the paper had weight enough to prove his point. You ruined everything.

Ruined everything? Seraphine scoffed. She took whats minemy child, my place. If anyone ruined something, its her stealing whats rightfully ours.

From now on, Howard said, voice flat and final, you will not receive a single cent from me. Not one penny. You will have no claim on my estate. Not a thing.

Seraphines face blanched. She straightened, chest trembling. Ill tell my mother about this she hissed. Youll see. She will make you change your mind.

Howards jaw tightened. Do it, he said. Tell her. See what she says now.

The room fell into a brittle silence, then a polite knock sounded at the door. A woman entered in heels and silk, calm in a way that seemed practiced. Lana, Seraphines mother and Mr. Howards second wife, surveyed the scene with the easy authority of someone used to smoothing storms.

What is this? she asked.

Howard flung the facts at her without ceremony. He told her everything Seraphine had done to Vivienne, and how he was a fool not to know his own son was being played at.

Lana listened, fingers lightly folded. She made a faint sound not shock, but calculation. Oh? she said, like a woman reading a menu. So what? We can fix this. Its not a big deal. A sincere apology, the right faces at the right time, and the public moves on. People forget.

Seraphine looked at Lana with pleading eyes. You you can do that? You can make them look like the victims?

Lanas smile tightened into something sharper. Of course. We have friends. A few calls, some social proof. The merger partners mustnt suspect instability. She turned to Howard. Think of the company. Think of appearances. Seraphine needs a calm hand. We can spin this.

If you dont want whats left of my goodwill, he said at last, voice lower, then leave this house. Leave it all. If you choose to trade a roof for a lie, be gone.

Seraphine collapsed. She sank into a chair and began to cry. Her hands covered her face.

Its Viviennes fault, she sobbed to Lana, when the others had turned away. She took my son. She needs to pay.

Lana patted her hand like a mother smoothing a fevered brow. Well see about that, she murmured. Well make sure she pays.

Adrian sat in his office, the room dark except for the city lights flickering through the window. He rubbed his temples, exhausted. Eliass empty room haunted him the most. Every corner of that space reminded him of laughter that no longer existed. His chest tightened every time he remembered the nurses voice saying, Im sorry, Mr. Calder he didnt make it.

But deep inside, something didnt add up. Vivienne couldnt have just vanished. He had people searching day and night, but it was as if she had disappeared from the world.

His thoughts were broken when the door opened without warning. Standing there was a woman he hadnt seen in weeks his mother. Her face was pale, her eyes burning with fury.

Before he could speak, her hand met his cheek with a sharp slap. The sound echoed in the room.

Youve ruined everything, she said, her voice low but trembling with rage. You destroyed your marriage, your name, and our familys dignity. You lied, you cheated, and now you expect me to stand by you?

Adrian stared at her, speechless.

She trusted you, she continued, her voice cracking. Vivienne loved you, Adrian. She gave you everything, and you threw it away for that woman. How could you?

Mother, please he started, but she raised her hand again.

Dont, she cut him off sharply. Dont you dare make excuses. You dont deserve to say her name.

Adrian lowered his gaze, shame rising in his chest.

Do you even realize what youve done? she said, her voice shaking. You didnt just lose a wife and a child. Youve brought disgrace to this family. Your father cant even show his face in public because of you.

He opened his mouth to speak, but she turned away, her eyes wet with anger and disappointment.

I never thought Id see the day my own son would make me feel ashamed to be his mother, she whispered.

And with that, she turned and walked away, leaving the door wide open behind her.

Moments later, another figure entered. This time, it was his own father. His steps were heavy, his face a storm.

Before Adrian could stand, a fist connected with his jaw.

You embarrassed this family! his father shouted. You ruined my friendship with Howard! Do you realize what youve done?

Adrian staggered, holding his face. Father, please

No! his father barked. Youve caused enough shame. You were given everything a good wife, a strong company and you threw it all away for greed and lust.

I didnt mean

You think meaning matters now? His fathers voice dropped lower, colder. From today, youre no longer welcome here.

Adrian froze. What are you saying?

His father straightened, his voice firm. You have two choices. Go to the rural branch and manage it. Start from nothing. Or be disowned. You choose.

Adrian looked at him in disbelief. Father, please dont

I said choose, his father said again, his tone final.

Adrians throat tightened. The walls around him seemed to close in, the life he had built crumbling in his hands.
