Blinded by Betrayal, I finally Left my Husband

Three years had passed since the car accident that plunged me into darkness and stole my sight. The police ruled it an unfortunate mishap, and for years, I forced myself to accept it. But today, everything was about to unravel.

The bandages had finally been removed. After years of living in darkness, I could see again. And the first person I wanted to look at was my husband, Nikolai.

It was our fifth wedding anniversary. I had spent the entire morning preparing a surprise dinner, imagining how his face would light up when he discovered not only the celebration, but also that my vision had returned. He had no idea Id quietly contacted doctors and searched for donors all these years.

For the first time in a long while, I felt whole again.

While waiting for the dishes to finish cooking, my phone vibrated.

One new email.

From: Anonymous Sender

Subject: You deserve to know the truth.

I almost dismissed it as spam. But the preview stopped me cold. This is why you went blind.

My pulse quickened. I opened the email. Only one sentence appeared: You thought it was an accident, didnt you? Listen to this.

There was an attached audio file. My finger lingered over the play icon. Something inside me instinct, fear urged me to stop. But curiosity pushed me forward.

At first, nothing but silence. Then a voice I knew all too well. Calm, firm unmistakable.

Nikolai.

Remove her cornea and give it to Carlo.

My breathing faltered. Carlo Sabines younger brother. My best friends little brother.

Sir, another voice said hesitantly a doctor, I realized. Mrs. Arvants eyes are perfectly healthy. We can look for another donor. If we proceed, shell permanently lose her

Do it, Nikolai interrupted, his voice turning icy. Sabines been crying nonstop. I cant stand watching her suffer. Sienna will manage. At least once shes blind, shell depend on me. She wont leave.

Sir, this isnt

Just do it! Nikolai snapped. Ill handle the paperwork. And shell never know. Shell think it was an accident caused by Carlo. He didnt mean it, and I wont let him go to jail Sabine wouldnt survive that. Besides His voice dropped, colder than ever. With her blind, Sabine and I can do whatever we want.

My legs gave out. The phone slipped from my grasp and hit the floor.

For a moment, everything froze the room, the air, even my breathing. The life I had painstakingly pieced back together shattered in an instant.

He did this to me.

Nikolai had taken my sight for his mistress. For Sabine my best friend. The woman I trusted with my secrets, my business, my home.

Memories flooded in. The nights after I lost my sight, when Nikolai held my hand and murmured that everything would be alright. He fed me, guided me through the house, kissed my forehead gently.

Ill be your eyes, Sienna, he used to whisper.

And I believed him. Every word. Every touch.

When he stayed late at work, I thought he was working hard for us. Every tender gesture, every reassurance I thought it was love.

Now I realized he was easing his conscience.

I staggered toward the table, gripping its edge until my knuckles turned pale. My chest tightened, my breathing shallow.

All these years, Id blamed fate. A cruel accident. I never suspected him. I trusted him when he promised hed never leave me.

But everything had been a lie. Every promise. Every kiss. Every I love you.

Tears blurred my newly restored vision as I covered my face. No I whispered, shaking my head. This cant be real.

But it was.

Another notification sounded. There was a second attachment a photo.

Nikolai and Sabine.

They stood in an office I recognized instantly mine. She rested her hand against his chest, both of them smiling like they belonged together.

My throat tightened, but no sound came out.

Five years ago, when I married Nikolai, I believed I was marrying my soulmate. Wed been together for ten years, ever since high school. We grew up side by side, shared dreams, built a future together. Everyone said we were perfect.

I believed them.

But the truth was far more cruel than I ever imagined. They had both betrayed me.

And worse hed stolen my sight just to keep me by his side.

My hands trembled. The wine glass on the table tipped over, red liquid spreading across the white tablecloth like spilled blood.

I picked up my phone and scrolled to a number I never thought Id call my lawyer.

When he answered, my voice was unsteady but resolute. This is Sienna Arvant. I want to file for divorce. Immediately.

There was a pause. Divorce? Are you certain, maam?

Ive never been more certain, I said, my tone turning cold. Start the process now. And make sure my assets remain untouched by my husband.

Understood, Mrs. Arvant. Ill check the records and begin the paperwork. Please hold for a moment.

I paced the room while waiting, each second stretching endlessly. Candlelight flickered, casting shadows along the walls like ghosts of everything Id believed in.

Finally, the line clicked again.

Mrs. Arvant, the lawyer spoke cautiously, there appears to be a complication.

My grip on the phone tightened. What kind of complication?

There was a brief pause before he continued. Ive reviewed the registry, and theres no documentation of your marriage to Mr. Nikolai Arvant. From a legal standpoint your marriage to Mr. Arvant was never officially registered.

The sound of the door opening made me go still. My breath caught in my throat as footsteps echoed down the hallwayones I knew by heart. I turned slightly, and my chest tightened.

Nikolai.

And beside him Sabine.

My stomach churned. I had barely processed the lawyers wordsthat Nikolai and I had never been legally married, that the past five years had meant nothing. Yet here they were, walking in together, laughing as though my world hadnt just collapsed.

Are you sure I should come today? Sabine asked, her tone gentle, though the hesitation sounded rehearsed. Its your anniversary, after all.

Nikolai let out a low chuckle, amused. Relax. You know we were never truly married. Thats why Im planning to marry you soon. I only stayed with her for the company. Once everythings transferred under my name, Ill make it official. Honestly, I only kept her around because I pitied her after her parents died but I shouldve left her long ago. For you.

Sabine laughed softly. Nikolai, she still thinks shes your wife.

He gave a faint, careless laugh. Shes blind, Sabine. She wont even know youre here. Itll stay between us.

Sabine giggled. That makes things easier.

Nikolai lowered his voice, teasing. Even if we slept together right in front of her, she wouldnt notice.

Something inside me cracked completely. I thought I had already reached the bottombut they had found a deeper place to push me.

Still, I didnt react. I swallowed the pain, wiped the tears from my face, and forced myself to move. Slowly, I stepped into the living room, keeping my voice soft.

Nikolai? Is that you?

I caught Sabines quiet intake of breath, but Nikolais tone shifted instantly, warm and gentle. Yes, love. Happy anniversary.

I gave a faint smile, pretending not to notice the unfamiliar perfume lingering in the air. Happy anniversary, I murmured.

Nikolai approached quickly and took my hand. A bouquet brushed against my fingers, the petals cool against my skin. Here, he said softly. Your favorite flowers.

My hands trembled slightly as I touched them. Theyre beautiful, I whispered. Thank you.

He leaned closer and kissed my cheek. You deserve them, he said smoothly, guilt hidden beneath tenderness.

From behind him, Sabine spoke in a syrupy voice. Hi, Sienna. Nikolai asked me to help with dinner. I hope thats alright.

I tilted my head toward her voice, pretending to search for her. Sabine? I didnt realize you were here, I said gently, forcing a smile. Of course, I dont mind.

Nikolai slipped an arm around my waist and chuckled. Shes just helping out. You know Im hopeless in the kitchen.

I let out a small laugh, though my chest ached. Yes I remember.

Silence settled brieflytense for them, suffocating for me. Then I heard it. A faint sound behind me. Lips brushing together. A quiet kiss.

My heartbeat stopped.

They really believed I couldnt see.

Sabine let out a soft giggle, and Nikolai murmured something low, his hand brushing her arm just behind me.

I forced another smile. Dinner smells wonderful, I said, still pretending.

Nikolai squeezed my hand lightly. Anything for you, love.

For the next few days, I continued the act the obedient, blind wife. I let them think they were untouchable. Sabine followed me around, her voice dripping with fake concern, but when Nikolai wasnt nearby, her words turned cruel.

Poor Sienna, she would sigh. It must be miserable being so helpless.

One day, she stretched her leg out while I was walking down the stairs, trying to make me fall. I stumbled deliberately, pretending to panic, though I had seen it clearly. I managed to grip the railing in time.

That moment changed something inside me.

The following afternoon, we walked down the same staircase. This time, I accidentally brushed against her arm. Sabine lost her balance and fell. The sharp crack of her ankle echoed, followed by her scream.

Nikolai! she cried. She pushed me! Sienna pushed me!

Nikolai rushed in, his face darkening.

Sabine? I said, feigning confusion. I didnt even know you were here. How could I push you?

Stop pretending! she shouted, clutching her leg.

Nikolai turned to me, anger flashing in his eyes. We had something important today, and you ruined it? Youre really useless.

Before I could respond, he shoved me hard.

My foot slipped against the polished floor. I fell backward, hitting the table before collapsing onto the marble. A sharp pain tore through my abdomen, stealing my breath.

Nikolai I gasped, clutching my stomach. Somethings wrong

He didnt even glance back. Instead, he bent down and lifted Sabine into his arms.

Then they left.

The door slammed shut, leaving me alone on the cold floor shaking, bleeding, and unable to even cry. I forced myself to stand, pressing a hand against my abdomen as the pain deepened. Somehow, I made it outside, flagged down a cab, and dragged myself to the hospital.

Bright lights blurred above me as the doctors voice broke through.

Mrs. Arvant, he said gently, you were pregnant but the fall caused internal bleeding. Im sorry. Youve lost the baby.

Pregnant. Lost.

I didnt even know I had been carrying a child.

When I finally left the room, my legs felt weak, my chest hollow. Then I stopped.

Sabines voice floated from just beyond the corner, lowered but still clear enough to hear. Nikolai I think shes beginning to suspect something.

Nikolai let out a dismissive laugh. So what? She wont have any proof. His tone turned colder, more calculating. Ill make sure she never gets her vision back. Every doctor whos handled her case is already taken care of. She doesnt need to see again. As long as she remains blind, shell always be under my control.

The doctors office Sabined the sharp scent of disinfectant, the air sterile and heavy. It felt too quiet, too controlled like the calm before something devastating.

Yes, he finally admitted, breaking the silence. Nikolai paid me. He instructed me to make sure you never recovered your sight and he arranged the same with the other doctors.

The words cut deep, like something sharp twisting inside my chest. Youre saying I couldve seen all this time?

He lowered his gaze, guilt flickering across his face as he nodded. For years, I followed his orders. But recently someone else approached me. He offered more money. Said I had to fix what had been done and restore your vision.

My fingers curled tightly. Who was it?

The doctor hesitated, then slid a small slip of paper toward me. He didnt want his name revealed. But he left this number. He said youd recognize his voice.

Later that day, after hours of pacing and wrestling with my thoughts, I finally dialed the number. My heart pounded as the call connected.

Sienna.

The voice was calm, deep achingly familiar.

Orion I whispered.

A low chuckle came from the other end. Second-guessing your decision now?

I closed my eyes, my grip tightening around the phone. Why would you do this?

Because I never stopped caring, he replied simply. Did you really think Id let him ruin you completely? I told you before Nikolai never deserved you.

Back in high school, the three of us were inseparable Nikolai, Orion, and me. We studied together, shared lunches, laughed over the smallest things. I once believed nothing could tear us apart until both of them confessed their feelings for me.

What began as teasing soon turned tense. I still remembered the night everything changed. After practice, Nikolai grabbed Orion by the collar, accusing him of trying to take me away. Orion struck first, blood staining Nikolais lip as anger burned in his eyes.

You dont deserve her, Orion snapped. You only want her because I do.

Nikolai laughed, cold and confident. Then lets see who she chooses.

I stepped between them, my voice shaking. Please, stop. You both matter to me. Dont make me choose like this.

But neither of them backed down. Nikolai smirked, wiping the blood from his mouth, while Orions expression darkened with hurt. I told them I needed time that maybe, eventually, Id understand my feelings.

In the end, I chose Nikolai. He was passionate, charming, unpredictable. I thought that was love.

Orion didnt argue. He simply turned and walked away. The next day, he was gone. No farewell, no explanation. Just whispers that he had left the country, taken over his fathers business, and built an empire far greater than Nikolais.

Even after all these years, Nikolai still resented him. Not only as a rival but because somewhere deep down, he knew Orions love had always been genuine.

If you want, Orion said softly, pulling me back to the present, Ill come for you in a few days. Well leave everything behind. Ill marry you myself.

I didnt hesitate. Yes.

The answer slipped out before I could think. I ended the call quickly, before doubt could creep in.

That night, I packed quietly. For the first time in years, my hands were steady. I wasnt afraid anymore. I was ready to leave.

The next morning, when I stepped into the house, Nikolai and Sabine were already in the living room, laughing over coffee as if nothing had happened. My jaw tightened.

There you are, Nikolai said coolly as he stood. You need to apologize to Sabine.

I frowned. Excuse me?

You heard me, he said sharply. You hurt her. Shes important to me, Sienna. Apologize.

Sabine crossed her arms, a smug smile tugging at her lips. Its only fair, Nikolai. After everything shes done

No, I cut in.

Nikolais head snapped toward me. What did you say?

I said no, I repeated, my voice firmer. Why should I apologize when shes the one who started all this?

His expression darkened. Dont test my patience, Sienna. Youve already cost me enough that business deal fell through because of your drama. Youll do as I say.

Then he grabbed my arm.

My hand moved before I could stop myself. The sharp sound of the slap echoed through the room.

No, I said coldly. You dont get to touch me anymore.

He froze, shock written across his face. Then his eyes narrowed, studying me. Realization dawned.

You can see?

A faint smirk formed on my lips. Yes, Nikolai. I can see now. Nervous?

He stepped closer, his anger dissolving into unease. Love why didnt you tell me? I couldve helped

I let out a bitter laugh. Help? Like when you paid the doctors to keep me blind? Like when you lied about our marriage? Dont bother pretending anymore, Nikolai. I know everything.

He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

Behind him, Sabines face had gone pale, her lips trembling.

I turned to her and slapped her hard. Her head snapped to the side. Thats for every lie, I said quietly. For smiling at me while sneaking around with my husband.

Tears filled her eyes, but I felt nothing.

I slid the wedding ring off my finger, staring at it for a fleeting second before letting it drop. It hit the floor with a sharp metallic clang that echoed through the room.

We were never married to begin with, I said, my voice cold and steady. Theres no legal record of us.

Sienna, wait Nikolai reached out, trying to stop me.

I took a step back, putting distance between us. No. Youve already taken more than enough from me. This time Im the one walking away.

My phone kept ringing without pause.

Nikolais name flashed across the screen again the tenth time that morning. Each vibration felt more insistent than the last, as if his calls were growing more desperate by the second. Soon, the messages followed one after another.

Nikolai: Sienna, please, we need to talk.

Nikolai: Dont do anything reckless.

Nikolai: Lets handle this like adults. I can explain.

Nikolai: Youre overthinking this. Come home.

Nikolai: Im sorry, alright? Just answer me.

Every message tightened the knot in my stomach. Explain? There was nothing left to explain. No excuse could erase what he had done.

I stared at the screen, my chest heavy with a dull ache. Then, without another thought, I blocked his number.

I had listened to enough of his lies. The silence that followed felt almost comforting. Almost.

Across from me at the police station, the detective watched as I handed over a flash drive along with a printed copy of the email. My fingers trembled slightly. Everythings in there, I said quietly. Proof that my blindness wasnt an accident. I want the person responsible Carlo Reyes arrested.

The officer scanned the documents before meeting my gaze. Ms. Sienna, youre saying your husband knew about this?

A bitter laugh escaped me. Not my husband. And he didnt just know he planned it. He paid the doctors to take my corneas and give them to Carlo. He wanted me helpless. Easier to control.

The officers expression turned serious. Well investigate immediately. If this goes to court, well need your full cooperation.

Ill do whatever it takes, I replied firmly. Ive spent years in the dark. Im done staying silent.

As I stood to leave, my phone vibrated again this time from an unfamiliar number. My stomach tightened. For a moment, I wondered if Nikolai was calling from another line, but when I answered, a familiar voice greeted me.

Sienna?

It was Beatrice Nikolais mother.

My throat tightened. Mrs. Arvant

Please, she said softly, her voice trembling. Dont call me that. Just Beatrice. I I heard everything. Can we meet? Please.

I hesitated. She had always been kind to me the only one in that house who treated me like family. When I lost my sight, she was the one who stayed beside me while everyone else slowly disappeared.

So I agreed.

When I arrived at her house that evening, she looked older somehow smaller, weighed down by guilt. Gray strands streaked her neatly styled hair, and exhaustion shadowed her eyes. She didnt even wait for me to sit before speaking.

Sienna, she whispered, clasping my hands, Im so sorry for what my son did. I swear, I didnt know everything. I suspected he wasnt faithful, but this I never imagined something like this.

I blinked away the sting in my eyes. You dont need to apologize for him, Beatrice.

But I do, she said, her voice cracking. I raised him better than this. You didnt deserve any of it.

I squeezed her hands gently. You were the only one who treated me like family. You were kind when no one else was.

Her expression softened as she nodded. Then let me help you now. If youre leaving him for good, Ill stand by you. Ill help you pack, make sure youre safe.

Her words struck deeper than I expected. I hadnt realized how badly I needed someone on my side.

Thank you, I whispered. But are you sure? Hes still your son.

Beatrice looked away, pain flickering across her face. He may be my son, she said quietly, but the man hes become I barely recognize him anymore.

Silence settled between us. Then she stood, grabbing her coat. Come on. Lets go back. Ill speak to him myself. And to that girl.

Sabine, I muttered, bitterness lacing her name.

Yes, Beatrice replied sharply. Her.

The drive started quietly. Rain began to fall, tapping softly against the windshield. I stared out at the blurred city lights fading into the dark.

Beatrice tightened her grip on the wheel. You know, she said softly, I once believed Nikolai truly loved you. The way he looked at you it was different. But somewhere along the way, power changed him. And I did nothing. Maybe thats my fault.

You tried, I murmured. You always did.

She smiled sadly. You remind me of myself when I was younger stubborn, too forgiving. She glanced at me. Dont make my mistake, Sienna. When someone shows you how cruel they are, dont wait for them to change. Leave before they break you.

I nodded, my vision blurring with tears. Im trying.

We were only a few blocks from the Arvant estate when headlights suddenly flared behind us too close, moving too fast.

Beatrice I frowned. That car

Before I could finish, the vehicle swerved violently and crashed into the side of ours. The impact spun everything out of control. Glass shattered. The car flipped once twice before slamming into the guardrail.

Smoke filled the air. The metallic taste of blood coated my mouth.

Beatrice! I croaked, turning toward her. She didnt move.

Darkness crept into the edges of my vision. I tried to reach her, but my arm wouldnt respond. Sirens echoed faintly in the distance, fading as consciousness slipped away.

The last thing I saw before everything went black was another set of headlights pulling up behind us and a familiar figure stepping out into the rain.
