The Expiration Date of Us

Aspen, do you take Julian to be your husband?

The officiants voice echoed through the grand hall, sharp and expectant. I didn't answer.

Instead, I stared coldly at Julians hypocritical face. This was our wedding day. But instead of a groom in love, I saw a man with a heavy scowl, his gaze dripping with nothing but pure, unadulterated impatience. Twelve years of history, and all he had left for me was this blatant, half-assed indifference.

Watching his annoyed expression, my stomach turned. The last wisps of the romantic fog evaporated, leaving behind nothing but cold clarity. This wasn't worth it. None of it was.

I ripped the lace veil off my head, letting it drop to the floor like trash. I met Julians shocked eyes with a cold smirk. "I don't."

Chapter 1

Twelve years. I had wasted a solid twelve years of my life tangled up with Julian. How many decades does a person really get in one lifetime?

"You got your wish, Julian. You're free."

I dropped those words like dead weight and walked out without a single glance backward. I checked into a hotel, held the power button on my phone until the screen went black, and buried myself under the heavy duvet.

When I finally forced my eyes open and dragged myself out of a restless sleep, the digital clock on the nightstand glared late afternoon of the next day.

Chapter 2

I didn't have the energy to explain myself, especially not when Julian's caller ID lit up my screen. I hit accept.

"Where are you?"

Three simple words, dripping with that same exhausted impatience. He sounded like a CEO dealing with a relentless, annoying contractor. He never used to sound like that.

Years ago, just him saying my name was enough to make my pulse jump. When exactly did the shift happen?

Before I could process it, the interrogation fired off like machine-gun rounds.

"What is your problem? Aspen, what did I ever do to you? You want to humiliate me in front of all our friends and family?"

"What kind of stunt are you pulling now? Literally nothing happened, and youre throwing a tantrum for an audience?"

"Youve been like this for years. If Id known, I never should have saved you back then."

Right. Twelve years together, and he probably spent most of them regretting it. Even now, standing at the edge of the cliff, he genuinely believed I was just throwing a fit.

"I'm coming back tonight," I said evenly. "We need to talk."

We could regret everything. We could watch it all burn to the ground. But I needed to slam the door shut on the last twelve years face-to-face.

A harsh scoff came through the speaker. "I don't have time. I barely squeezed this wedding into my schedule to begin with. I told you to wait, but you had to force this exact date!"

He didn't miss the chance to twist the knife. "You wanted to get married, I went along with it. What more do you want from me?"

How incredibly cheap. Over a decade of history, and I had been reduced to a desperate beggar forcing his hand. His reluctance choked the air between us, and the last shred of my drive to fight evaporated.

"Right. I know you're busy." My voice was flat. "So consider the wedding canceled. Think of all the time I just saved you."

"Aspen, if you walk away now, don't come crying to me later when I refuse to marry you!"

"Perfect. Make sure you carve that on your tombstone."

I ended the call.

Regardless of the wreckage between Julian and me, I practically grew up in his house. His mother had always treated me decently. I owed her a proper goodbye.

It was around lunch. We met at a restaurant downtown. When I walked in, his mothers face was etched with worry, but she forced a tight smile the second she spotted me.

I slid into the booth across from her.

She waved me into the seat, immediately asking how I was holding up. Terrible. Obviously. But I lied smoothly and told her I was fine.

She didn't press. She just sat quietly, watching me eat. I hadn't touched food since yesterday, so I focused on clearing my plate. When I finally looked up, her eyes were soft.

She reached across the table, grabbing my hand. She scanned my face, her eyes suddenly shining with unshed tears. "Aspen, you've lost so much weight. No matter what happens, you have to take care of yourself."

That kind of maternal warmth was something I had craved for years, but now it felt like holding onto sand.

I swallowed the tight knot forming in my throat, forcing a small smile. "I'm eating, I promise."

She let out a heavy sigh, her thumb lightly brushing the back of my hand. "Aspen, you and Julian how did you two end up here?"

Chapter 3

My chest tightened, a sharp ache cracking against my ribs. How did we end up like this? Was it just time, or was he always this hollow?

I didn't bother explaining anything to his mother. At this point, words were just dead air. She didn't press for details, only telling me to think it through and not shortchange myself.

The truth was, Julian and I might have survived if life hadn't thrown us into a meat grinder. His dad had a massive heart attack years ago. The staggering medical bills practically bankrupted them, leaving his mom to work triple shifts just to keep the lights on.

Julian hustled. He kept his grades at the absolute top of our class. But the night our acceptance letters to a top-tier university arrived, his mom broke down at the kitchen table.

"You did everything right, Julian," she sobbed. "I'm so sorry we failed you."

Julian sat on the worn-out sofa, his posture rigid. When he finally looked up, he plastered on that sickeningly responsible smile.

"It's fine, Mom. Dad just had surgery. I'll defer my enrollment. I can work full-time and cover the bills."

He played the stoic martyr perfectly, but his jaw was clenched so tight the muscle jumped. It felt like a punch to my gut.

Later that night, I found him on the balcony. He looked so hollowed out standing in the cold wind. I walked up beside him, forcing a light tone.

"You know I've got that trust fund sitting around, right? Consider it payback for saving my life."

He stiffened, his expression darkening instantly. "Aspen, I'm not touching your money. Absolutely not."

Back then, I didn't get it. We were supposed to be a team. Why wouldn't he let me help?

It sparked our first real fight. We stood out there until the temperature dropped, our breaths pluming in the freezing air, until I finally caved.

I thought he was just fiercely protecting his pride. I didn't realize until much later that, forced to choose between his ego and me, he had already made his choice.

But he wasn't going to drop out. I wouldn't let him. I picked up part-time shifts right alongside him.

At first, he tutored. With his flawless transcripts, wealthy parents lined up to hire him. He stacked his schedule, which naturally painted a target on his back.

It all crashed down when some spoiled prep-school kid threw a tantrum and falsely accused him of being physically rough. After that, his tutoring clients vanished overnight.

He stood outside the tutoring center, his knuckles white as he crushed his lesson plans. The world was practically spitting on him.

I clapped a hand on his shoulder.

"Whatever. We can drive for UberEats. Or hand out flyers. We'll figure it out."

He pulled me into a crushing hug. I can still remember the faint scent of jasmine detergent on his shirta scent that had faded away years ago.

"I'm sorry, Aspen," he whispered fiercely into my hair. "I swear I'll make this up to you. I'm going to give you everything."

We spent the entire summer grinding through brutal heat and exhausting shifts, but I didn't care. I bought every word of his promised future. Back then, it was unfathomable to either of us that a love that fierce could simply burn out and turn to ash.

Chapter 4

I wandered down the street. My phone wouldn't stop buzzing. I swiped open the screen.

Our university alumni group chat was blowing up. Dozens of messages flooded in, all dissecting the exact same topic: what the hell happened to Julian and me, the campus "golden couple."

Since everyone knew I was lurking in the chat, they tried to keep the gossip somewhat veiled.

But then, an older upperclassman completely bypassed the pleasantries, tagged Julian directly, and dropped a bomb.

[Some men are just straight-up trash. Its bad enough being useless, but God forbid a woman outshines them.]

The chat flatlined. Even staring at a screen, the secondhand embarrassment was palpable. Obviously, Julian didn't have the spine to reply. The chat stayed dead.

I grabbed an iced latte from a nearby corner shop. The sidewalk was packed with pedestrians, but the city noise faded into a dull hum. My stomach was running on fumes, making my grip on the plastic cup feel weak.

The phone vibrated again. Someone had tagged the upperclassman. It was Piper. She sent a wide-eyed, sweating emoji, followed by a massive block of text.

[Hey! I think you might be misunderstanding the situation? You don't even know Julian. Isn't it a bit unfair to judge him like that? Did someone tell you something?]

The response came back in seconds.

[Oh, look who it is. If it isn't the infamous stage-five clinger who loves hanging around guys with girlfriends. Don't act like everyone is as blind as Julian, Piper. We all see right through your little innocent act. If you love putting on a show so much, I'll book you a Broadway stage tomorrow.]

She didn't pull a single punch. And honestly? Piper totally deserved the drag.

When exactly did Piper slither her way into Julians and my life?

It started when his dad's heart condition flared up again. He had been relying on expensive meds just to stay stable. Around the same time, Julian's mom got sick, and their financial situation nose-dived.

Desperate to save money, his dad skipped his prescriptions. Predictably, it triggered another massive heart attack, landing him straight in the ER.

The doctor said he needed a second open-heart surgerya staggering bill that would absolutely ruin the family. I didn't hesitate for a single second. I swiped my card and covered the entire cost upfront.

When the exhausted surgeon stepped into the waiting room to announce the operation was a success, Julian finally lifted his head. There was an intense, raw emotion burning in his eyes. He stared at me, his voice hoarse but resolute.

"Aspen, thank you. I mean it. Thank you."

I offered a soft smile and pulled him into a gentle hug. "We're family, Julian. You don't have to thank me."

His arms clamped around me like a vice, crushing me against his chest as if trying to merge our bodies. We stood there in the sterile hallway for god knows how long. By the time he finally pulled back to go see his dad, the shoulder of my sweater was soaked.

At that moment, I genuinely believed it. I believed Julian was worth every single sacrifice.

A few days later, in his dad's recovery room, I met Piper for the very first time.

She had her hair thrown up in a messy bun, flashing two deep dimples whenever she smiled. She set a fruit basket and some expensive organic milk on the bedside table, leaning in with sickening familiarity.

"How are you feeling, sir?" she cooed.

His dad looked lost. Julian quickly stepped in. "This is Piper. She's a junior working on my research project."

Julian's mom frowned, her eyes performing a slow, calculated sweep over Piper.

Chapter 5

Piper, suddenly acting like she just noticed the rest of us, scurried over to Julians mom. She flashed that sickly-sweet, hyper-enthusiastic smile. "Hi! Oh, I almost forgotI brought some bone broth my mom made for his recovery."

Julian offered a soft smile. "Yeah, her moms a great cook."

Pipers gaze slid back to Julian, her eyes practically burning a hole through him. The raw, naked affection in her look was impossible to miss. She wanted him. And not just a passing crushit was the kind of obsessive, predatory hunger that wouldn't stop until she got what she wanted.

Piper lingered for another twenty agonizing minutes before finally making her exit. I stepped out to grab a quick update from the attending doctor. When I walked back toward the room, I caught his mothers hushed, sharp voice slipping through the cracked door.

"Julian, what exactly is going on with that girl?"

Through the gap in the door, I saw Julians shoulders stiffen.

"What do you mean? Mom, don't overthink it. We're nothing. Just friends."

His mother let out a heavy exhale. "Good. Because you cannot let Aspen down. Not after everything."

Julians voice dropped, sounding earnestat least in that exact second. "I won't. I promise."

I let my guard down. I was stupid enough to believe twelve years of history made us bulletproof against some random junior. But Piper wasn't a one-off anomaly. She became a fixture.

Julian, a guy who used to leave his phone in another room for hours, was suddenly glued to his screen. He started texting constantly. Sometimes I'd catch him staring at his phone, a dopey, private smile playing on his lips. One evening, I finished up work and leaned over his shoulder, teasingly asking what was so funny.

He jerked back. His thumb slammed the lock button, plunging the screen into darkness. His jaw ticked as he shifted away.

"Nothing. Just a stupid meme someone sent."

I knew snooping was pathetic. But the suffocating anxiety gnawing at my gut was worse. Late that night, while the steady rhythm of his breathing filled the dark bedroom, I slid his phone off the nightstand. I typed in his passcode.

I tapped open his messages.

And there it was. Piper.

[Morning! Don't tell me you're still being a sleepyhead? Get up!]

[I'm heading to the park with some friends today. I'll send you some cute pics later!]

[Pretty sure you're the lazy one. Who slept for three hours straight when we went hiking last week? I couldn't even poke you awake.]

The air stalled in my throat. The man who barely had time to kiss me goodbye before rushing out the door was religiously texting another girl good morning. I scrolled up.

They were texting non-stop, sharing every mundane detail of their days. I opened his camera roll. Hidden in his recent saves were three different photos of Piper posing in the sun at the park.

There weren't any explicit photos or outright confessions of love. But reading the next exchange felt like plunging into an ice bath.

[Julian, I'm craving a ribeye steak so bad right now. Didn't you say you're amazing at making it? You're so talented! I burn everything I touch lol.]

Julian replied with a smirking emoji. Piper instantly fired back with a pleading puppy-dog face.

[So does that mean I get to try your famous steak for lunch tomorrow?]

[Yeah, I'll pack you a huge portion. Don't eat so much you get a stomachache.]

Piper replied with a giggling emoji.

[I wouldn't mind! Last time I sprained my ankle, you carried me to the campus clinic anyway!]

Julian replied with a sticker that said "Absolute Menace."

Chapter 6

I set his phone down on the nightstand. I stared at his sleeping face. It was the exact same face Id known for years, yet somehow, he felt like a stranger.

When exactly did he start replacing me? The things we were supposed to do together, he was doing with another girl. The steak dinner that was supposed to be my exclusive privilege was being packed up and handed off to her. The boy who was supposed to be mine was tainted.

I tossed and turned, sleep completely out of reach. I didn't even know if I should ask him about tomorrow. It was my birthday. I had a reservation booked, but I had no idea if I should even save him a seat.

Of course, he didn't show up. He was too busy delivering a home-cooked meal to his precious junior to remember that the girl he claimed to love was sitting in an empty restaurant, waiting for him.

I finally called him that evening. He sounded like a man who just woke up from a coma, launching into a frantic apology.

"I'm so sorry, Aspen. I've been swamped. It completely slipped my mind. I'll make it up to you, I swear."

He claimed he had to stay in the lab until midnight analyzing data. I said okay and hung up.

I packed up the untouched food and drove to his campus. The second I stepped out of my car, the sky ripped open, unleashing a massive torrential downpour.

The freezing rain pounded against my body, but I didn't waste a single second crying for myself. Through the heavy downpour, I watched coldly as Julian acted like a cheap bodyguard, carefully shielding Piper.

She was clinging to his back. He carried her, stepping over a puddle with intense, grave concentration while she giggled softly against his shoulder. He held an umbrella in his free hand, rain cascading off the edges.

He turned his head slightly to check on her, his gaze soft and attentive. They exchanged a look, smiling like a pair of star-crossed lovers.
